My Rating - 3 Stars!
I have mixed reactions to Chelsea Falin's Poor Florida Cracker.
This is a story of Sissy and her brother Jesse trying to save themselves and their younger siblings from a life of neglect.
The author explores their neglected upbringing, as Sissy and Jesse are raising themselves and the twins, doing all they can to stay together and avoid CPS taking them away. Their parents are addicts who the kids try to avoid at all costs.
Sissy and Jesse are two characters who are impressively strong, survivers under the worst of circumstances.
Told from alternating povs, the tone is sad throughout. The writing it good and the story flows well. Fully riveting for much of it, I was on edge throughout. There were some things I liked, and some I didn't though.
Basically, it's an impressive thing to survive the circumstances you have no control over. But, damn, some of the choices these two made for themselves really pissed me off.
Poor Florida Cracker is a decent young adult tale of survival. I was definitely fully invested, but I will be skipping the sequel when it comes out.
