False Start (Tackled by Love #2) by Quinn Ward

Amazon Link - Available in KU
Goodreads Link

There was no way for them to be together in the past. Now that Lincoln's retired and the world football is more accepting, can he convince Nixon to give them a chance?

Nixon Cross isn’t wired to share his life with anyone. He’d considered a relationship once, but after the one man patient enough to put up with all his quirks shut him down, he committed all of his energy to football and helping his players. Now, one of his players need more help than Nixon can provide and his former flame is the one man who will know what to do.

Retired NAFL player Lincoln Sims had no choice but to stay in the closet; he was a professional athlete at a time when it was impossible to be honest about his sexuality. After retiring, he confessed his secret to his wife and son because he was tired of living a lie. Now, he’s ready to live his life.

Nixon Cross is the man he left behind but could never forget.

Can these men find a way to recover from their false start years earlier?

My Rating - 5 Stars!

False Start is the second book in Quinn Ward's Tackled By Love series. This part of the series takes overlaps with the first book's timeline, with it perfectly following book one.

In Down By Contact, we met Nix and Linc. Now we get their story, which I simply love.

Their journey is one of second chances between two men in their forties. Being together now makes them face their pasts and all the pain and fears it involves.

They fell in love years ago, but were victims of the times, never able to be out and proud together.

This story also has a very serious side to it, as a secondary character is dealing with the side effects of repeated head injuries during his football career. It's a tough thing to read and definitely has a major impact on the other characters. I appreciate the author tackling such a serious issue in a way that explores how it effects the injured person as well as those around them.

I love this book. And I love this series. Quinn Ward is fabulous at writing sports romances. Each of Quinn's sports books holds a spot close to my heart, with the characters who have come to feel like family.

False Start is a great addition to this series. Quinn Ward once again impresses with this look into the locker room and support staff.

The nerd, the coach, and the hookup…

Asher-

Swipe left, swipe left, swipe left. Sure, the idea of a quick, no-strings intimate rendezvous via hookup app sounds oddly thrilling, but it’s simply not me. Or maybe it is me, because it happened…and I liked it. Until I realized he looked familiar for a reason. A bad reason. Now I’ve made a faux pas with the sexiest man on planet Earth, and my internal karma system requires me to fix it. Help!

Blake-

I may seem like I have it together, but the truth is, I’m a hot mess. I’m so deep in the closet that I can’t remember my real name some days. That’s okay. The benefit of one-night stands is anonymity. Until Asher. Not a total surprise. I’ve always had a thing for geeks, but I’ve never met anyone like him. He’s a pint-sized dynamo on a quest for perfection who can help me come out…if I follow his script.

Hmm. I’m in.

The Jock Script is an MM bisexual, geek/jock romance starring a bowtie wearing nerd, a sexy lacrosse coach, and a shenanigan inducing script!

My Rating - 5 Stars!

The Jock Script is the third book in Lane Hayes' The Jock Script series. This sports romance is easily read as a standalone.

I adore this jock/nerd romance. It's the classic opposites attract trope and it's nothing but fun.

This includes a hookup app and a hot first encounter.

Blake. Oh sweet Blake. He's the classic bisexual character who's been hiding for his whole life. His employers are homophobic and he's afraid to ever come out. But with Asher, he meets someone who helps him embrace his truth. I love seeing Asher learn to live authentically.

The writing is great, with enjoyable characters and a riveting storyline. I love the humor sprinkled throughout and all the heat. There's plenty of banter and quirkiness to keep one delighted throughout.

The Jock Script is an enjoyable opposites attract romance. Everything about this Lane Hayes read is sweet and charming.

Asher closed his mouth in a tight line and sighed. “We should change the topic. Every time I’m with you, I secure my spot in Hades.”

I threw my head back and laughed. “What’s with you and the guilty conscience? I admire your commitment to honesty, Ash, but I don’t think it’s healthy to punish yourself after the fact. Not to mention, your rules seem arbitrary. They don’t make sense.”

“Sure, they do.”

“Hmph. You say sex is a part of nature, and you’re happy to discuss it until your internal sex-o-meter overloads and you decide you’ve overstepped some invisible boundary. It’s like you want to punish yourself for no good reason.”

Asher opened and closed his mouth. “I don’t do that.”

I polished off my salad, pushed my plate aside, and reached for my wineglass. “Yeah, you do. You should give yourself a break once in a while.”

“Says the devil incarnate.”

“Who me?” I flashed a roguish grin. “I’m not so bad, and you don’t have to be so good. Is this the remnants of a super religious upbringing or—”

“Oh, gosh, no. My mother is a hippie. She’s not judgmental at all.”

“Then why—”

“I’m just weird, Blake.”

His tone was firm rather than sharp and sent a strong message that he’d prefer to drop the subject. In fact, he looked suspiciously eager to greet the waiter when he returned to clear our salad dishes and set dinner plates on the table. I observed his animated hand gestures, his starched collar, and perfectly straight bow tie, wondering what he was hiding under all that armor.

Asher wasn’t weird, he was—okay, fine…he was totally weird. But I had a feeling he was compensating too. Making up for something or glossing over an unseen flaw. Sort of like a kid standing guard over a lamp he’d busted by accident. No one would notice as long as he made sure the unblemished side was never shown.

Call me crazy, but that got me. Yes, I was very attracted to him and definitely wanted to get naked and horizontal with him ASAP. But I wanted to know him too. I wanted to peel away his protective layers and study his quirks. His internal system of checks and balances fascinated me.

I twirled my fork around my pasta and smiled. “You know, I’m no devil and anyone who sucks dick like you cannot be an angel. There’s got to be a good middle ground for us.”

“Yes. As friends.”

“Right,” I agreed, shifting in my seat to adjust my cock when he hummed around a mouthful of pasta. No joke, my dick woke up at the mention of alien sex and was now stretching the seam of my zipper. I sipped my wine and willed my body to get the “friend” memo. “So, buddy…since we’re supposed to be spending time together now, I think you should come to my game next weekend.”

“Game,” he repeated, drawing out the single syllable into two. “The one you coach? Or do you play also?”

“I play with a club team, but our season ended a couple of weeks ago. We’re on a break till summer, which is fine ’cause my kids have finals and my girls’ team is in the last stretch before CIFs.”

“I don’t understand that acronym, but I’ll come to your game and maybe afterward we can do power tool…things.”

“Sounds like a date. The game is at ten at Westgate. I’ll text you the address.”

“Okay. I have questions, like…where do I sit and what should I wear? Also, what are the rules?”

I smiled. “Sit wherever you want and wear whatever you want. The idea is to have fun. Well…and to kick OC Lutheran’s ass. As for the rules…the goal is to put the ball in the net more times than our opponent. You’ll be able to follow along.”

He didn’t look convinced. “I’ll do some research. Now, what about us? Do you want me to be there and not speak or…are you going to introduce me? And if so, what will you say? I need to rehearse my lines.”

“Lines? This isn’t a play, Ash. We’re friends.”

“No, we’re not. We hardly know each other.”

I frowned. “Then we need to fix that ’cause I’m going to introduce you as my friend. It’s less complicated that way.”

“And if someone asks where we met, I’m allowed to improvise, correct?” he teased. taking a big bite of pasta.

Too big of a bite. He slurped a rogue piece of tagliatelle with wide eyes, then covered his mouth with his napkin. It was pretty freaking cute. I pointed at the sauce on his cheek.

When he swiped at the wrong side, I hooked my finger and motioned for him to lean in. I wiped his cheek with my thumb, underestimating the intimacy of the gesture. The strong current of heat and desire sizzling between us threw me off guard, rendering me speechless.

Rival by M.A. Gray

Amazon Link - Available in KU
Goodreads Link

The last time I saw Grant Sullivan, I told him to leave Winter Harbor and never return.

And now he's back.

For good? I doubt that. Doesn't matter if he's the new coach of a rival football team. Doesn't matter if looking at him makes my blood heat, my pulse throb in longing. He's dead to me.

Grant Sullivan is the first man I ever fell in love with.

The man who stomped my heart into pieces.

A beautiful liar.

Grant Sullivan is, and always will be, my enemy.

Rival is a standalone, enemies-to-lovers M/M romance with a HEA.

My Rating - 5 Stars!

MA Gray's Rival is a fabulous read. From the start, I love the voice and tone of this second chance, small town romance.

Parker and Grant are two former best friends who have a slew of unresolved feelings between them. Not only do they have to deal with their personal issues, they are faced with coaching rival high school football teams.

Parker's a teacher and coach, who's stunned to discover that his former friend is back. He's closeted, and still hurt by the past. Grant is back in town after ten long years, a pro athlete recovering from an injury.

These two are dealing with so damn much pain and suffering, all of which I could feel jumping off the pages. The animosity and hatred is intense. Of course, hate and love go hand in hand, and this is no exception.

I love the sports , love the characters, and the aspect of past versus present.

This story explores the aspect of a closeted NFL player who continues to hurt those he cares about, as he caves into the pressure of what's expected of a pro athlete. We all know this type of story, and if you love this issue like I do, you'll find this one thrilling.

This quote just needs to be re-stated. "Life is not a single thread, It's many, many threads stretching between people, between places, between events." So true. And so beautifully stated.

And, oh my, the side story with Keon. Tears, so many tears. Happily, there's also hope and inspiration. I love this addition to the story.

This is a story of going after what one really wants, of allowing dreams to change, of making different choices the second time around. It's about the struggles of facing what one truly wants while having the power to hurt others.
It's a story of hatred and animosity, regrets and confusion. It also includes a threesome gone wrong, that is fascinating in it's complexity.

The writing's great, with a tone that drew me in immediately. Written in alternating first person pov, both characters are fully brought to life.

I easily fell into Ma Gray's Rival and am still immersed in it. It will take me a while to get over this one. It's beautiful, tender, painful, and completely riveting. I can't recommend it enough.

Project Hero by Briar Prescott

Blurb

What if you accidentally fell in love with the right guy?

Andy:
If my life was a movie, I would be the sidekick. Not an especially promising start when my plan is to finally let my best friend know I have a crush on him. No worries, though. I have a plan. I just need a complete makeover. Change everything about myself so that when Falcon returns from his summer vacation, he can finally see I’m the love of his life. I totally know what I’m doing here.
Well, not really.
If I knew what I was doing, I wouldn’t look like every nerd cliché wrapped into one awkward package.
In short, I’m screwed.
But then Law Anderson enters the picture…

Law:
It’s all very simple. I need somebody to tutor my hockey team, and Andy needs somebody to help him with his crush. Sounds like a match made in heaven.
Only the more time I spend with Andy, the more I like this quirky guy who makes me laugh, and pretty soon I’m the one who’s tutoring Andy in way more than we initially agreed upon.
It’s fine.
I have it all under control.
But as weeks pass and the chemistry between us turns explosive, I’m starting to think that I might be in way over my head with Andy.
If only I could make Andy realize that he doesn’t need to change himself for love. If only I could make Andy see that he just needs to be with somebody who has considered him perfect all along…

Review
My Rating - 5 Stars!

Briar Prescott's Project Hero is an absolutely adorable and enjoyable book.

Andy and Law are two men who are on the outside, always the sidekick in one way or another. With the help of one another, they both realize they are more than just a sidekick.

Andy won my heart quickly, as he's adorably quirky, odd, and serious. His rumblings and outbursts are hysterical. He thinks he's un-remarkable, yet he truly is remarkable. Then there's Law, who is just so darn sweet and tender, as well as determined.

These are two men who are lovable and their story is enchanting. They are complete opposites. Their upbringings, their social status, and their family relationships are all vastly different.

Overall, this is a story of falling for the guy who's helping you try to impress someone else. Andy's always been in love with his best friend, and Law sets out to help him impress that friend, in exchange for Andy tutoring Law's hockey players.

This is a story of two men falling in love without ever realizing it. I enjoy the slow burn aspect of this tale. The little looks and the little ways that love develops over little everyday things.

Don't ask me to pick a favorite part or favorite aspect of this story. Is it the way Law sets out to help Andy? Is it the way that Law excels in understanding and helping Andy? Is it Andy's growth throughout this whole process? If I had to choose, I'd say it's all of these and more. Hell, I am in awe of the way Law dealt with his set-back.

Told in alternating first person pov, the reader is easily pulled into every feeling. Holy crap, the emotions!  The longing, the doubts, the pain, and the love, all jump off the pages. The writing as a whole is extremely impressive for a debut novel and the title is wonderful.

Project Hero is a wonderful friends to lovers romance. I love every damn second of it and I can't wait to read it again. This is perfect when you're in the mood for a light, fluffy new adult read.

If there’s one thing that’s a certainty in life, it’s change.

It’s taken Victor Kalinski years to settle into the kind of happiness that he thought he’d never find. The small town of Cayuga, New York, has welcomed him warmly. It’s given him a championship team to coach, a tightly-knit group of friends, a father who he has reconciled with, and a safe place to raise the son he adores. The small town has also blessed him with Dan Arou, his husband and his soulmate, and one of the most skilled forwards on the Cougars. Given Dan’s outstanding play in their recent Calder Cup win, it was inevitable that Dan’s time in the minors was about to come to an end.

When Dan is given a starting position in Boston, Victor’s serene life is thrown into complete chaos. Pride over Dan’s accomplishment fills his heart but facing a long, lonely season in Cayuga is causing no small amount of discord. Add in a wedding that will give his son a new stepfather, health issues for his dad, and Victor’s own penchant for saying things that aren’t exactly politically correct, and the impending explosion is guaranteed to blow Vic’s life to bits. Life-altering choices will have to be made. Will Victor rebound from the challenges, or will he be unable to accept the upheavals that life has dealt him?

My Rating - 5 Stars!

Rebound, the first book in VL Locey's Overtime series is an amazing book. A continuation of the story of Vic and Dan from the Point Shot Trilogy and Coach's Challenge, it's a fantastic addition to what we already have enjoyed. And, damn, I love all things Vic and Dan!

Told in alternating 1st person pov, the reader is easily pulled into the character's heads, becoming fully engrossed in their emotions. And don't doubt it for a minute, this one is full of emotions and carries a sad overtone throughout.

Dan and Vic have a lot they are dealing with. In Rebound, we see them dealing with a lot of changes in their relationship and careers. One is coaching while the other is moving to another town. The alcoholism is still front and center, as the author excels in treating this as a lifelong issue, in which one never stops craving that drink. And they have a slew of decisions to make.

I am extremely touched by the way they all treat Jack, who they are raising as a femme/gender fluid child. There is so much beauty to this aspect of the story, and I applaud the way it's written, with care and compassion. The strength of their love for Jack is beautiful and I love the emotional journey with this issue.

Their story is one of frustration and loneliness as they miss one another. Their story is one of anger as they deal with things out of their control. Their story is also one of spice and heat.

I love the writing style, which is quick and fluid as I've come to expect from this author. She excels in writing dialogue that is natural and entertaining. The plot is riveting, fast paced and includes a few surprises.
Rebound is a marvelous story, with a whole lot going on, taking the reader on an emotional rollercoaster. VL Locey never lets me down, and I love, love, love this book!

REVIEW TOUR - Coast to Coast (Arizona Raptors #1) by RJ Scott & VL Locey

Length: 57,412 words

Cover Design: Meredith Russell

Blurb

When opposites attract, it’s not just the team that’s in for a shake-up.

When a stipulation in his father’s will throws Mark back into a family that disowned him, he has only two things on his mind; buying his way out of contractual obligations and running in the opposite direction as fast as he can. When neither option pans out, he finds he is now a one third owner of the struggling Arizona Raptors hockey team, and that is just about the worst thing he could have happened to him. Not only does he hate hockey, but the Raptors are a bottom-of-the-league team, rife with jealousies and anger in a locker room that only knows self-pity. How is he supposed to help turn things around when the only way to start fixing things is to form an alliance with the estranged siblings he’d run from fifteen years earlier?

Then there’s Rowen Carmichael, a stubborn, opinionated, irritating man with superiority issues and questionable taste in music. Butting heads with Rowen, who he’d never even wanted to hire in the first place, is one thing, but there is no way in hell that he will allow the growing attraction to the new coach become anything more. Until with everything on the line, he has to make decisions that will change his life forever.

After years of collegiate coaching, Rowen is given an offer that he simply can’t refuse, although perhaps he should. When he’s presented with the chance to take one of the worst teams in the league and mold them into a future cup contender, the challenge is just too alluring to pass up. He leaves his beloved Ontario behind and moves west to the arid city of Tucson where he is faced with a broken team, shoddy management, and players overflowing with resentment and bigotry.

Never in his twenty years of hockey has he ever seen such a raging dumpster fire of an organization. Yet there’s something about this team and this city that compels him to roll up his sleeves and start dismantling. He has his eye on a new associate coach that’s bound to makes waves, and several key players who should be sent packing. Now all he has to do is convince the new owners of the team that his choices are for the best. If only Mark Westman-Reid, one of three siblings who now own the Raptors, wasn’t so damned rock-headed, so damned snooty, and so damned appealing his job might be a bit easier.

My Rating - 5 Stars!

Coast to Coast, the first book in the Arizona Raptors series, is everything I love about RJ Scott and VL Locey.

This hockey romance is intriguing from the start. Not only are the Raptors in need of being "fixed", their owning family is as well.

Mark, ahh, poor, lovable Mark. His history with his family is ugly, as he was kicked out for being gay and was homeless for a time. He wants nothing to do with his brothers or this team. Unfortunately, he's being forced to spend a year running the Raptors with his brothers. Cue family issues galore.

I love Mark. He's a survivor and is rightfully full of resentment towards his family. As if his family issues aren't enough, he's also finding himself attracted to the new coach of the Raptors.

Meanwhile, that new coach Rowen is a middle aged man tasked with fixing this broken team. He's arrogant, straight forward, and sassy, making for a whole lot of fun. He won't take shit from anyone, and is here to do a job.

Together, these two are a lot of fun. Both men are frustrated with one another. They disagree, they bicker. Rowan doesn't want anything to do with the entitled young man, and Mark's frustrated by his attraction to the older coach. But the sparks keep flying and the tension is palpable.

This is a fun story, as The Raptors are the hated team in the league. As the new coach, Rowen's tasked with the job of cleaning this team up and getting them on the right path. In other words, he's got a tough job ahead of him.

Their story includes a fractured family, some fun hockey players, and an arrogant player who isn't happy with anyone.

Coast to Coast is an great hockey romance. This writing duo combines opposites attract, age gap, and some good chemistry to create this entertaining story. I'm excited to see what else these authors have in store for us with the rest of the Arizona Raptors books.

My Rating - 5 Stars!

One on One is a riveting, fantastic story by VL Locey. It's book four in the Cayuga Cougars series, which is somehow getting even better. I absolutely love this book.

Lan's middle-aged and is just discovering his sexuality. He's divorced and longs to find love again. When he spots Town playing music, he's instantly blown away. No one has ever affected him this way before.

I adore Lan's kids and ex-wife, which is always a fun addition to any mm romance. One of the best scenes involves Lan's daughter catching them kissing. It's adorable, funny and memorable.

Town's a great character who breathes so much life into Lan. Their age difference is fun. Even more fun though is their personality differences. Lan's a southern man who's old fashioned and polite. It's refreshing and also adds to the humor.

I love this series. Every book. Every man. I am devastated that this is the end. Luckily we'll be getting some spin-off books.
