Open Road by M.J. O'Shea

Amazon Link   - Available in KU

Angus has been with the same guy for ten years. When his boyfriend breaks up with him the night of his thirtieth birthday party and announces his engagement to a twenty-two-year-old less than ten hours later, Angus is… a mess. To put it lightly. He spends days in bed, drinks himself into a stupor every night, and ends up losing his job and his apartment. His best and oldest friend, Reece, decides it’s time for an intervention. And a change of scenery.

Reece and Angus take off on a buddy trip across the US. They don’t have much of a plan; they just start driving. It takes Angus a couple of days to do much more than grunt when Reece talks to him, but slowly he opens up. They drive, talk, heal, shout, drink a bit too much sometimes, dance, meet new friends… and somewhere between Portland, Oregon, and Portland, Maine, they fall in love.

Which was the last thing in the world Angus expected.

My Rating - 3.5   Stars!

Open Road is a slow burn friends to lover romance by MJ O'Shea.

This is a story that starts with a bad breakup for Angus. With a road trip to help his friend heal, Reece sets them on a new course for life.

The road trip changes both of them. They find healing, and they also find love with one another.

There's a lot going on for these two. Angus's ex did his best to keep them apart. And damn it, that pisses me off. I know it happens, but I wanted to slap Angus for letting it happen.

In the end Open Road is a sweet and tender romance. This MJ O'Shea is a feel good friends to lover, hurt/comfort tale.

I haven't seen her in three years. I haven't talked to her since the kiss. So why am I on a plane, flying across the world to spend a week with her in Germany? One word: Pops. My life’s a mess. My possible football career is hanging on by a thread. I'm driving the roads of Germany in honor of Pops with the one girl I can never have. And I’m sharing a bed with her, the girl I've measured everyone else up to, while desperately trying to not to touch her. We made a pact growing up, never to get romantic with each other - never fall in love. And I'm about to break that pact. For good.

My Rating - 4.5 Stars!

The Romantic Pact is a sweet friends to lovers romance by Meghan Quinn. The second book in the Kings of Football series, it's easily read as a standalone.

Hazel is given a trip through Germany with her former best friend, Crew, someone she's falling for. They've know each other their whole lives, but after some years apart, Crew's grandfather final wishes include a trip for the two of them.

The trip is a wonderful time of healing and closure for both of them.

And then there's Hazel's worries. I appreciate the way she fears the unknown and worries about her future.

In the end, it's a beautiful story. The overall theme is inspirational and well executed. And dear lord, I could list a whole page of meaningful quotes,

"...there's plenty of gray in the world. The choices you make in life can't always be clear-cut decisions. You're going to have to open your eyes to see all the colors in between when making a choice."
"Please don't be so consumed with the black and white that you forget to learn to love in the gray."

Overall, The Romantic Pact is a sweet friends to lovers tale. Meghan Quinn created a memorable love story with this one. I just wish I could have met Pops!

Push & Pull (The Midwest Series #2) by Brigham Vaughn

Brent Cameron has been dreaming about a road trip around Lake Michigan for years. When his best friend, Nathan, ditches him to spend the summer with his boyfriend, Caleb, Brent is pissed. Stuck between a rock and a hard place, he reluctantly agrees to take Caleb’s best friend, Lowell Prescott, instead.

Brent is a former hockey player and recently out of the closet. Lowell is an in-your-face gay guy who rebels against the limits people put on him. Tempers fly and sparks flare as they hit the road, which leads to a hot night they both regret in the morning. Despite the rocky start, Brent and Lowell slowly begin to realize they have a lot in common. As the miles disappear behind them so does their animosity. Casual hook-ups aren’t Brent’s thing, and Lowell doesn’t do relationships, so they agree to focus on their friendship.

By the time they make it to the shores of Lake Superior, their feelings have deepened past simple friendship, but neither of them have the guts to admit it. When the past intrudes, will it derail the trip and the possibility of a relationship?

My Rating - 5 Stars!

Push & Pull is the second book in Brigham Vaughn's Midwest Series. As I loved book one, Bully & Exit, I was super excited to get to read this one, and it held up to my expectations.

In this book, we are treated to a fun and exciting romance between Brent and Lowell. As complete opposites, they get off to a rough start together. But, as luck would have it, they end up taking a road trip together.

Brent's spent his life as a closeted hockey player. Out now, he's still weary of spending time with the out and proud Lowell, who's graceful, likes makeup and is super rich. Personally, I love the over the top, dramatic, force of nature that is Lowell.

I found myself enjoying every second of their trip together, liking the slow way in which they start talking about their pasts, and trying to put it behind them.

Their trip is full of flirting, teasing, and some major sexual tension. Unfortunately, they also face awkwardness, confusion, grief, and avoidance.

I absolutely love Push & Pull. Brigham Vaughn does a fantastic job of taking such difference men and having them slowly fall in love. It is fun, entertaining, riveting and had me unable to put it down. It's a definite recommendation for me.

GRL 2019 AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT - Ride: The Chance of a Lifetime by B.L. Maxwell

In my attempt to cover some of the attending authors for this year's GRL,
I am reviewing

?????!

BLURB

Kace Hallard leaves Sacramento, bound for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, something he and his father had always planned to do together. When his father realizes he won’t be able to make the trip, he makes Kace promise to go on his own.
He takes off, not sure he’s up to the challenge. When he has mechanical trouble a few hours away from home, he questions his choice even more.
Striker Johnson is just out buying lunch for the guys at the shop when he notices the handsome stranger in the parking lot checking over his Harley and looking confused. He approaches him and offers his help.
The next few hours fly by, and Kace asks Striker to join him.
It’s the trip of a lifetime for them both, one man looking to ease his grief, the other riding toward emotions he has no hope of controlling. One way or another they’ll have to decide if they ride together or separately, when life throws them one more curve.

REVIEW
My Rating - 5 Stars!

BL Maxwell's Ride is a wonderful read.

Kace's reason for the road trip is bittersweet, starting the book off on a tender note. As his bike breaks down, he meets Striker and spends some time with him. Immediately the connection is strong, and the attraction is even stronger. Soon the two are off on the ride of a lifetime together.

Their story is one of healing, of getting a chance to enjoy life. Their story is one of fulfilling a promise and saying goodbye. Kace and Striker are incredibly adorable and romantic together.

I love the tone of this book, and the flow. It sucked me in from the start and kept me intrigued throughout. The author writes with great descriptions of the scenery, while never overdoing the details. I could feel everything along with the men and felt like I was with them.

I definitely enjoyed every second of Ride. BL Maxwell managed to create a sweet romance with a meaningful, emotional adventure.

BL Maxwell

BL Maxwell grew up in a small town listening to her grandfather spin tales about his childhood. Later she became an avid reader and after a certain vampire series she became obsessed with fanfiction. She soon discovered Slash fanfiction and later discovered the MM genre and was hooked.
Many years later, she decided to take the plunge and write down some of the stories that seem to run through her head late at night when she's trying to sleep.

2400 miles. Four friends. One big secret.

Angus Reid is pretty sure he's being catfished.

After spending the last half of junior year talking online to the guy of his dreams, Angus wants to meet. In person. So when Scotty brushes it off with excuses of not being ready, red flags go up.

Determined to either catch Scotty out, or take a shot at real love, Angus embarks on a summer road trip with his adorkable roommate, Tyler. But as summer stretches on, and mixed messages fly between them, Angus finds his heart torn.

His potential catfisher?

Or his straight best friend?

And while their road trip takes them across the country, Angus is headed for one destination.

Either a happily ever after ... or a broken heart.

All books in the #lovehim series are stand alones. The series number is recommended reading order.

Review
My Rating - 5 Stars!

To Be Honest is a wonderfully refreshing young adult romance. This is the third book in SM James' #lovehim series, but is easily read as a standalone.

It has all the elements of young love and finding yourself. The teens struggle with their doubts, their feelings and more. All as they take a road trip. We follow along as they deal with their fears, wants, confusion and mistakes.

The author does a fantastic job of incorporating a lot of elements into this tale. Catfishing, homophobia, mental health, suicide, bullying and assault are all addressed in a realistic and honest manner.

To Be Honest is a great coming of age story. SM James has created a charming, fun and romantic tale. At it's heart, it's a complicated story of young love riddled with fear. I enjoyed every second of it, and I need to go back and read the first book in the series now.

Excerpt

I pull out of the parking lot and Tyler directs me to the campsite. The ground is rough as anything, and it’s lucky it’s summer, because I can just imagine that in winter we would be driving on ice.

“Just here,” Tyler points to a space ahead, confirming it on the map the campsite admin handed us.

It’s reasonably busy and we’ve had to drive a bit further down. There’s forest pushing in all around us and I can only spot two other tents. Not that those monstrous things could be called tents.

“Just do you know,” I say as I put the car in park and follow Tyler out. “If I get killed, I’ll hold you personally responsible.”

“If you get killed, I promise I’ll make it up to you.”

“I’ve got to tell you though, I’m not planning on dying a virgin.”

He throws a smirk at me over the roof. “Don’t worry, neither am I.”

I open the trunk and start shifting some of our stuff into the front while Tyler lays down the back seats. When I climb in, a thrum of electricity passes over my skin and I have to remind myself to cool it. We’re just friends. Tyler slides in after me.

“Here.” He hands me some blankets and we set to work making it comfortable before lying back, heads rested at the opening.

It’s so peaceful. The night is still and quiet, holding the warmth of the day, and the stars stretch out above us endlessly, smudges of silver blurring them together. I fold my hands behind my head as Tyler takes off his glasses and tosses them in the front.

“And that right there,” Tyler says in a nasally voice, pointing through the back windshield of the open trunk. “Is the ubulla majorious.”

I give him the side eye, not sure if he’s joking or not. “Oh yeah, and what’s that?” I point to another cluster.

“The fibrosious enema.

“And that?”

Ursulla’s Uranus.

I snort, rolling onto my side to look at him. “You are so full of shit.”

“I swear.” He lays a hand over his heart. “See? There’s Angusius’s Titianus.”

He finally gets a laugh out of me and I shove his shoulder a little. “I think your brain’s broken.”

“Nope. It remembers everything, remember, Angus?”

“I do remember. Which is why I wouldn’t be surprised if you knew all the actual names of the constellations and were just goofing around.”

He tries to hold back a guilty smile.

We lapse into a comfortable silence, him staring up at the stars, and me staring at everything but him.

I hesitate. “Thanks for not bailing on me.”

“Are you kidding? It was a choice between this and going home. Trust me, it was a no brainer.”

“I’m honored.” I roll my eyes.

He chuckles softly and pokes me in the bicep. Two fingers. Just like the first day we met. “You should be. You’re always my first choice.”

My cheeks heat and my stomach twists painfully. I’m well aware of his teasing tone but somehow my body completely misses it. “I mean, I wouldn’t say you’re my first choice. At least second or third, though.”

“Ho-oh!” He hangs his head back, showing off his long neck. “You’ve wounded me.”

“Need mouth to mouth?”

He cracks up. “I’d probably enjoy it too much.”

He’s teasing. Teasing. But damn it, if I don’t get this flirting under control it’s only a matter of when not if our friendship implodes.

I’m dying to trace my lips over that long, smooth stretch of skin just below his ear.

He rests his head to the side, looking at me, and a chunk of hair flops down in his eyes. “Have you heard from Scotty yet?”

The lust dries up as worry kicks in. “No, actually. I’m trying not to think about it.”

“I’m sure he’s fine.”

“If he’s done something—”

“No. He wouldn’t have. From what you’ve told me it was his choice, you can’t think like that.”

I scrub a hand over my face. “I basically forced it on him though.”

“Hey.” Tyler’s fingers circle my wrist and he tugs my hand away. “Nope. We’re not doing this. You don’t control other people’s choices. Not today, not tomorrow, just don’t.”

“If only it was that simple.” I sigh.

“It is.” He’s so certain I almost believe him. Instead I reach out and pull the back door closed.

“I’m tired,” I say, tucking up my legs. And if my legs are too long for the space, Tyler’s definitely will be.

With the door closed the outside world is cut off. Tyler turns back to the window, looking up at the sky, and for the thousandth time this year, I wish I had someone to share my feelings with. It sounds lame as hell but I could really use a hug. I just want somebody to be my somebody.

And with Scotty gone, I’m further from that than ever.
