Crimes of the Heart, Book 1

A gambit for love and a half-baked revenge plot; one hot Seattle summer…

Arnie

One minute I’m minding my own business enjoying the sunshine, next I’m wearing my iced coffee.

I’m going to teach Tobias Barrington a thing or two; the first: you don’t always get what you want. I have no idea what the second is, I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Falling in love with Tobias is not on my list of lessons.

Tobias

I've never forgotten Arnie Ferguson, or the night we had together. When I find him again, I want to get to know him—as more than a friend.

I may come from a wealthy family; but I know better than most that money can’t buy happiness. But brash, socially awkward Arnie Ferguson makes me think happiness is possible when you let your heart chose.

Feinted Love is a first person, dual POV, following Arnie Ferguson and Tobias Barrington as they do their best to awkwardly fall in love. No cliff hanger, HEA guaranteed. Heat level, 3+.

Special Blog Tour Excerpt:

From Arnie’s POV

Tobias Barrington is so damn handsome. If I could’ve dreamed up a man just for myself, Tobias would’ve been my special order; he is everything I crave, and he has extra toppings. Thick black hair that curls up at the ends as it grows longer, pale skin—this close I can see a faded scar at one corner of his luscious lips. And blue eyes, the kind that are almost green but not quite, eyes I could lose myself in.

Tobias’s eyebrows draw together. “Are you sure you’re okay?”

I nod, stepping back and out of his grasp. “Yeah, sorry, I just got off work.” I gesture behind myself. “I was in the pit today, uh, washing dishes; it was really hot in there.” Anything to get Tobias to ignore my awkward daydreaming. Although telling him I’ve been washing dishes at my just-over-minimum-wage job doesn’t make me feel much better.

“Oh, I bet, it’s hot today.” Tobias smiles.

If I’d thought I was in dangerous territory a minute ago, now my internal alarm bells are clanging so loudly I’m pretty sure I can actually hear them. Tobias’s smile is brilliant.

“Can I buy you a drink? I bet you’re dehydrated. And I kind of owe you one,” he says quietly.

Tobias has a dimple in one cheek. Fuck.

“A drink?” I echo. What does he owe me a drink for?

Tobias’s smile widens further. I don’t know what to do. The dimple is distracting me.

“Yeeesss, a drink, a liquid, something to hydrate you.” He chuckles. “The Madison Pub’s patio is open. So is the Blue’s. You could probably use a little time outdoors; you said it was hot in there today.”

Someone bumps into me as they move around the two of us to enter the coffee shop. I have the dual realization that we’re blocking the door and that no way should I have a drink with Tobias. Except I want to.

Why am I thinking about passing up this opportunity? I can have one drink. It’s probably a really bad idea—I’m not prepared—but I’m going to do it anyway. After all, he said he owed it to me.

“Um, I have to get up early,” I babble.

Really, Arnie? Get up early? This is why I hardly ever got into trouble when I was a kid: I learned early on that I could not lie.

Tobias checks his watch, a silver Rolex with an indigo face. “It’s only three thirty. But if you can’t, that’s okay. Maybe another time?”

Is it my imagination that Tobias seems disappointed?

“I, um, have an appointment,” I fib. “I can’t stay for long. And I stink,” I blurt out. An appointment? All I could think of was an appointment? “An interview, I mean.” I hope, anyway, someday to have an interview.

Tobias had started to turn away, but at my words he turns back. “We can sit on the patio, and you smell fine to me.”

I look around for Charley Hunter. The last few times I’ve seen Tobias he’s been with that absolute tool of a friend, or whatever he is.

“Where’s your friend?” I ask. “The skinny blond with the terrible sense of humor?”

Tobias chuckles again. I nearly die. Still, I manage to scowl and narrow my eyes.

“I’ll have a drink with you, but not if he’s going to show up.” I look around as if Charley might be hiding behind Tobias or maybe in the shrubbery.

“Charley has an event tonight. He’s busy getting ready.”

“Is he planning his own funeral? That’s an event I’d attend.”

“If you come have a drink with me, I’ll tell you.”

How could I resist?

From Tobias’s POV

Charley raises an eyebrow. “So, coffee guy…”

“His name is Arnie.”

“Coffee guy to me, until he decides to learn my name.”

“I like him, Charley.”

“You don’t even know him.”

“I know a little. He’s maybe a year or so younger than me, he graduated from a high school in north Seattle, and he has a degree in data science.” I can online stalk as well as anyone.

And, even though it was ages ago, I remember what it was like to be with Arnie, how good he felt in my arms, and how horribly disappointed I was when the police arrived and broke up the party. My one and only rebellious act; I’d been grounded for an entire year.

“First of all, I don’t want to know how you found that out—but still, second of all, you don’t really know him.”

I sigh but nod, because it’s true. “But I want to get to know him.” How do I get to know someone who seems to hate me? And who my dad is certain to despise.

As if reading my mind, Charley says, “Your dad will hate him. I suppose there’s not a better reason to date the guy.”

Andrew will hate Arnie. And he won’t be polite about it. If the two ever meet, my dad will take one look at Arnie and immediately know how much he makes, where he buys his clothing, how much he has in savings—and that information will leave Andrew cold. As he puts it, he doesn’t mind much that I’m gay, but I should date in my socio-economic zone.

I glance across the table. Charley is watching me closely. I sigh again. “Maybe if I manage to date Arnie, my dad will get so angry he fires me and forgets I exist?” I hadn’t considered that angle before. It was a possibility.

“There’s always hope. Have you come up with a strategy?”

“Not anything more than to keep going into the Buzz when he’s working until he gives me some sort of sign—or gets a restraining order.”

“Hmm.” Charley sips at his drink while he considers my problem.

While Charley plots, our food arrives. We eat silently, both lost in thought. This is one of the things I appreciate most about Charley: he never cares that I’m not super chatty and don’t always have something to say. We’re very opposite personalities, but we mesh. I only wish we were remotely attracted to each other; it would solve a lot of my troubles. My dad may not approve of Charley on a personal level, but his family has even more money than ours.

“Okay,” Charley says. “I’ll drop by the Buzz a couple more times with you, mostly so I can rile him up—it’s fun.” He laughs. “And then I think you need to fly on your own. See if you can catch him coming in for his shift, or even better, getting off work. Then just talk to him. Don’t let yourself get in your own way.”

“I’m really bad at talking,” I remind him.

“But you’re not,” Charley says. “You just need to break the ice.”

Somehow, I think Charley’s idea of breaking the ice is different from mine.

Love Vintage Blend (Home in Hollyridge #2) by Elle Keaton

Amazon Link  - Available in KU
Goodreads Link

Jeff Morgan is rebuilding his life; Zach Brown is trying to keep his from falling apart.

After being disowned by his parents Jeff leaves the city to start over again, hoping to reinvent himself as a winemaker in the small town of Hollyridge. Why not dream big?

Zach is struggling to keep his boutique winery afloat and the summer intern is one more body which will help that happen—and oh, what a body. The only thing is, he’s sworn off men.

Until he met Zach Brown Jeff knew he was gay—but he’d never kissed a man.

One look at Jeff, and Zach knew it was going to be a long, hard summer.

Jeff doesn't know much about wine and even less about love but maybe he's just what Zach needs to save his winery and heal his wounded heart.

A standalone in the Home in Hollyridge series, a dual POV about a man learning to live his own life; and a winemaker who needs a little help from a friend. 24k words

My Rating - 4 Stars!

Love Vintage Blend, the second book in the Home in Hollyridge series is a delightful read by Elle Keaton. It's easily read as a standalone.

This book starts with Jeff taking a summer internship at a winery. The boss Zach doesn't give the best first impression upon meeting Jeff.

Jeff is an interesting character. An ex-banker, he's getting a fresh start. His inexperience and mistakes working at the winery make him lovable character. And he certainly doesn't mind the handsome Zachary, the silver fox who owns the winery.

Their attraction is quick, and they don't wait long to dive into a physical relationship. It's not insta-love though. This is a story of attraction and desire. It includes a loyal dog, a vile ex-boyfriend, and some threats.

As for Jeff's time on the winery, his innocence is cute and his mistakes are adorable.

The writing is great, with a wonderfully atmospheric setting, fantastic characters, and an entertaining storyline.

Love Vintage Blend is a short and sweet book. With just 91 pages, this Elle Keaton read is a fast one that will leave you with a cavity from all the sweetness.

Long Shadow (Hamarsson & Dempsey #2) by Elle Keaton

Title: Long Shadow
Author: Elle Keaton
Genre: MM Romantic Suspense
Series: Hamarsson & Dempsey, Book 2
Tropes: Opposites Attract; Hurt Comfort; Family Found
Release date: May 7, 2020
Standalone: No

Niall’s known nothing but betrayal. All Mat wants is Niall’s heart; what will it take for him to coax Niall in from the cold?
Mat's connection with Niall is tenuous. One step forward, two steps back. Since that night on the beach Niall's been avoiding Mat like a bad case of the flu--which, ironically, most of his deputies have come down with. What will it take for Niall to believe Mat wants him for who he is?
Mat's overworked, Niall's unnerved, and then things really go sideways.
Will a killer destroy everything before Niall realizes they are stronger together than apart?
Long Shadow is a dual POV about a broody introvert and a somewhat patient Sheriff. Mat will have to prove to Niall he's the man for him. The Hamarsson and Dempsey series follows the same couple as they find their way to their happily ever after.

My Rating - 4 Stars!

Long Shadow, the second book in Elle Keaton's Hamarsson & Dempsey series, picks up where Conspiracy Theory leaves off.

This story includes an ongoing mystery, plenty of cute kid time, and further development for Matt and Niall's relationship. Their chemistry remains strong, and they continue to entertain.

It's another good book, full of suspense and mystery, intrigue and danger. Add in romance and sex and it's a fun ride.

Told in dual pov, both characters are well explored. However, this one does seem a little slow to me at times. Things definitely pick up as the story progresses, but this one was tougher for me to stay focused at times. Overall, the author's writing remains crisp and smart, with two characters who keep the readers intrigued and a mystery that keeps the reader interested.

Long Shadow is a good continuation of the Hamarsson & Dempsey series and I am excited to see what comes next for these men.

He paused at the guardrail, his hands jammed into the pockets of his jacket for protection
from the cold. As he stood at the end of the road, the fog began melting away, slow at first and then faster, until he could see all the way across the water to the mainland crouching in the distance. Niall took a deep breath of the salt-laden air, filling his lungs, then released it. As he stared out at the dark silhouette of land, something unnameable inside himself loosened a bit further, a nearly tangible click into place. Piedras felt right.

Niall didn’t feel like an old-timer, but he did have a history on the island; he existed here
as more than a bitter homicide cop. Some islanders—like Mat Dempsey—even seemed to want him there. Most of the residents seemed to accept Niall’s presence, and the few who whispered behind his back… well, that’s the way things had always been.

And, he thought as he breathed in and out again, more than likely the camper was no big
deal. He was making a mountain out of a molehill—something his grandmother used to say quite often. There was likely a perfectly good, lawful reason the owner was driving around the island and only using facilities when they were less likely to run into other inhabitants.

The cop in him protested. Niall tried to ignore it.

His thoughts drifted further afield, as the fog continued to fade, to the sexy and very
available Sheriff Dempsey. Mat seemed to see right into Niall’s soul and never once
flinched—he actually thought he liked Niall. Mat was something Niall had never had in his life, or not often, anyway. Mat represented family, safety, commitment. Given everything Mat had done since Niall had come back to Piedras, it should be easy for Niall to trust him. But he
couldn’t find the off switch for the little voice inside that pinged a warning every time he and
Mat got close.

It was, however, proving difficult to stop thinking about him.

Review
My Rating - 4.5 Stars!

Conspiracy Theory, the first book in Elle Keaton's Hamarsson & Dempsey series, appears to be the start of another addicting series.

First, I need to say that the cover doesn't match the storyline. This is not a tough guy story at all. This is a romantic suspense at it's finest.

In this slow burn romance, Niall quits his old life and returns to his small town. There he's reunited with his sort of ex, Matt, with whom he left off on bad terms.

What follows is a whole lot of mystery, as they work together to find out what's going on in their town. There's a murder to solve, strange animal sightings, and more. The reader is kept intrigued and guessing throughout.

Despite there being so much happening, the characters are developed enough to allow the reader to get a good sense of them, as well as their backstories. There's a good mystery, with great flow, and a solid pace. This is definitely an intriguing story.

The setting is that of a small island town, and the townspeople add greatly to the charm, and will hopefully lead to a fantastic series.

Conspiracy Theory is perfect for anyone who's looking for a good romantic suspense. Elle Keaton expertly combines a mystery with a slow burn, second chance romance. I am excited to see what else develops for Niall and Matt in the future.

Conspiracy Theory (Hamarsson & Dempsey #1) by Elle Keaton

Title: Conspiracy Theory
Author: Elle Keaton
Series: Hamarsson & Dempsey, Book 1
Genre: MM Romance/Mystery/Suspense

Synopsis:

Mat Dempsey returned to Piedras Island after his father’s death. These days he’s Island County’s sheriff. He’s happy enough, even if moving home from San Francisco effectively forced him back into the closet. Mat’s well-ordered universe collapses when a local’s body is discovered floating in the cold waters of Hidden Harbor’s marina. All hell breaks loose in the community, and accusations fly…all coinciding with Niall Hamarsson’s return.

Niall and Mat have a history, and it’s not one Mat’s proud of. He owes Niall an apology, even if it means getting down on his knees. However, Mat’s first priority is investigating the murder before his community tears itself apart, and he may have to ask the aloof Niall Hamarsson for help.

Push apart, pull together, yes or no... The chemistry crackles between them, but will the two men be able to put aside their pasts and embrace a future?

Excerpt I:

Mat turned out of Hamarsson’s driveway and pulled to the side of the road. He needed oxygen. He hadn’t known what to expect when he decided to confirm the rumor flying around Piedras that the “Hamarsson boy” was back. Even the younger people were calling Niall the Hamarsson boy, and they’d never met him.
Hamarsson was not a boy. Not by any stretch of the imagination. The sight of him on the roof shirtless had rendered Mat speechless for a moment, and then he’d said the stupidest thing—because Niall was right, they’d never been friends.

With Niall’s shirt off, Mat had seen the dark ink of several tattoos across his chest and along one arm, with the hint of one continuing onto his back. Until today Mat hadn’t considered himself a tattoo man, but Niall’s ink sparked something in him. Something he was going to need to extinguish, because Niall clearly hated him.

Except II:

“Hamarsson! Niall! Are you all right?” Mat called out while he picked his way from the cabin to the beach. Niall didn’t move or answer. When he reached him, Mat grabbed his shoulder—ready to shake him, to demand a reply, anything so Mat would know he was okay. Residual anger from earlier threatened to resurface; more likely fear, Mat acknowledged. Before Mat opened his mouth to repeat himself, he shined the flashlight directly toward Niall’s face.

Hamarsson’s face was perfectly blank. He didn’t acknowledge Mat’s presence in any way; he stared unseeing out over the black water. Mat looked out in the same direction. All he could see was dark waves, the hint of a moon. Any stars were hidden by cloud cover.

Carefully, Mat moved around to face Niall, kneeling in the damp sand in front of the log. Mat’s knees complained, but he ignored the twinges.

“Niall, look at me.” Mat took off one glove and gently stroked Niall’s cheek with the backs of his fingers. “Niall. Look at me,” he repeated.

Ever so slowly, Niall’s eyes moved so he was looking at Mat instead of the wide expanse of water. What his face hid, his eyes expressed: pale pools of fathomless pain. Mat wanted to make the pain go away; he wanted back the fire and anger he’d seen in their last encounter. Anything but this… blackness.
