Love Unlimited (Love Language) by Reese Morrison

Amazon Link   - Available in KU

When you have everything you want, is it wrong to want more?

Dustin has the perfect summer to look forward to. His genderfluid boyfriend, Landon, is moving in so they can fully embrace the Daddy/boy dynamic they’ve both been craving. His best friend, Zhong, found an adorable partner in Ash, whose puppy play interests fit perfectly with an asexual Daddy.

And when the two couples spend time together, everything seems right.

Uniting two fragile, new relationships into a foursome could spell disaster. Or maybe their love for each other could be unlimited.

Love Unlimited has two Daddy Doms with very different age play styles, a fierce middle, an sweet little, impact play, puppy play, and a HEA for everyone. This is the fourth in the Love Language series celebrating Deaf characters and Deaf culture. It continues story lines from Love Lessons and Love Limits, which should be read first.

My Rating - 5 Stars!

Love Unlimited is a fantastic romance in which two couples merge into one loving relationship. I absolutely fell into this Reese Morrison immediately and couldn't devour it fast enough.

I love this book! It's emotional, hits on a unique dynamic, and is definitely hot.

These men are all amazingly unique. And there's a lot going on in this book. Their tale includes living as a gender queer person, living as a deaf person, Daddy dynamics, age play, puppy play, and plenty more. There's some bondage and plenty of littles interacting.

The age play scenes are wonderful, totally caring and sweet, and the puppy play scenes are heart-warming. I also really appreciate the comparison between age play and puppy play.

But it's the four men together that makes this story so darn special. There's so many layers to each relationship and I love the way everything evolves into more.

Love Unlimited is a great read. I love this romance and can't get enough of Reese Morrison's unique stories.

Without a Doubt (Love Starts Here #1) by E.M. Lindsey

Amazon Link   - Available in KU

How did the worst date of his life turn in to the man of his dreams?

Carter Winter’s not sure there’s anything worse than watching the man he’s on a date with slip his number to the bartender… except maybe finding out six months later that his bad date is his new boss who doesn't seem to remember Carter or that night. He wants to run, but he also knows he can’t pass up this opportunity. After all, it's been his dream to work at London Enterprise, and he can't turn it down now, even if it means working as a PA for Rhys London.

Fortunately, Rhys seems like an entirely different man. And while Carter doesn’t want to trust him, that isn’t easy when Rhys makes him want to believe in second chances. Carter’s been burned before, but being graced with one of the man’s rare smiles, Carter finds himself absolutely helpless against the racing beat of his heart.

Rhys London has never been a man of feeling. Spending most of his life running his company and cleaning up after his destructive brother, he hasn’t had time for things like love.

Until his business partner hired Carter Winter—a bright, beautiful man who makes Rhys want to feel.

And while Rhys is used to losing out and shutting off his heart, something about Carter makes him want to reach for the unreachable. After all, Carter is the first person he’s ever met that makes him believe in love, without a single doubt.

Without A Doubt is the first book in a romantic, light-hearted, small town trilogy. It contains no cheating, and a happily ever after.

My Rating - 5 Stars!

Without a Doubt is the first book in EM Lindsey's Love Starts Here series. Omg. I love this book.

It starts with a horrible date, followed by the more awkward of job interviews. And then it gets good.

Carter's in a messy situation. His friend wants him to get laid, which ends up with him on a date from hell. And when he finally gets  a new job, that bad date is his boss, who doesn't remember him. Of course, there's a reason for that.

Rhys, oh poor Rhys has so much on his plate. His brother's an out of control ass. But it's his grief that had me wanting to hug him. Since losing his husband, he can't get past his pain.

Everything about this story had me mesmerized. I couldn't put it down. At all.

The mistaken identity. The boss/employee situation. The confusion. The doubts. The misunderstandings.

But what keeps it all awesome are the feelings. I love the connection between Carter and Rhys.

As for Carter's hearing loss, I love how it's written. Best of all is the way that's it's a huge aspect of Carter's life. Yet, with Rhys, it isn't at all. I love it!

Overall, Without a Doubt is a wonderful read. This EM Lindsey romance had me invested throughout.

Actions speak louder than words.

Long-haired bad-boy guitarist Xander has skeletons in his closest that refuse to stay dead. After a series of setbacks, Xander hits new lows, almost costing himself his reputation and career. While trying to take steps in the right direction toward better decisions and good choices, he meets Natalie, and for the first time—maybe ever—Xander sees past himself and past the music his rock band is famous for.

Their relationship is an unlikely one, with outside factors creating obstacles the two would have to tackle to make their love work.

He is reckless while she responsible.

He thrives in the spotlight while she will do anything to avoid it.

He speaks fluent profanity while she doesn’t speak at all.

He works to win her heart, despite having to overcome the communication barrier, while she tries to look past the intensity of the spotlight they find themselves in.

My Rating - 5 Stars!

One Motion More is a great rockstar romance. The first book in LA Tavares' Consistently Inconsistent series, this is the start of what looks to be a riveting series.

I really enjoy Zander and Natalie's story.

Xander's a rock star who has a public breakdown. His girlfriend played him and it hurt. A lot. And then he meets Natalie.

Natalie's deaf and not interested in Zander. Not only does she want nothing to do with his kind of life, she also doesn't want to be with a hearing guy.

But, yes, he wears her down. And Natalie is perfect for Zander. They start off with a fun, light-hearted relationship, with Zander learning to understand her and the issues deaf people face. I am truly in awe of all he does and how quickly and easily he learns to communicate with her.

The two quickly more forward with their relationship. The author gifts us to all the sweet and tender moments between them, including how much Zander wants to make things work with her. I love all the little moments between these two.

Their story involves personal obstacles, as well as outside obstacles. But in the end, the strength of their love changes Zander and heals him.

The author explores several of the pitfalls of being famous. The rumors. The headlines. The fans. The paparazzi. I always enjoy this part of these stories, as my heart hurts so bad for everything famous people have to deal with. Yet, I myself am a huge fangirl, so the conflict is real.

Written all from Zander's pov, the writing style drew me in and kept me intrigued throughout. Everything flows well, and it's pure entertainment throughout. I normally prefer dual pov, but in this case, this truly is Zander's story; Zander's journey. And I love it.

There are a slew of fantastic secondary characters, including all his bandmates. Their banter and snark is fabulous. And then there's Jana and Kelly. Everything about the friendships he has with these women is wonderful.

One Motion More is a fantastic romance. If you like characters who redeem themselves publicly, you will love this LA Tavaras read. I enjoyed every moment of Zander's story and can't wait to see what happens next with this band.

The locked, guarded door and shiny new mark on my already scarred record are laughable penalties. The real punishment is the smell in these small quarters—body odors, stale alcohol. One thing is for sure… There are no VIP suites in New York police stations.

More like a bench than a bed, the slab of flat ceramic I lay on is uncomfortable and determined to punish me with back problems that will last longer than this overnight hold.

My eyes snap shut each time I try to open them—an involuntary response to block out the outdated fluorescent light overhead. I press the palms of my hands into my eye sockets and run my fingers through my overgrown hair. Sure, the lights don’t help my already throbbing head and the sleeping arrangement is a far cry from comfortable, but the atmosphere is ‘welcoming’. I purposely bent the rules just far enough to win myself a one-night, all-inclusive stay at the nearest precinct.

Quiet. No crowds. No screaming fans. Nowhere for me to be, no way for me to screw up. Most people would find the locked doors, silence and lack of company alarming. Not me. For me, it’s tranquil. A vacation. Maybe that’s why I frequent the sin-bin so often.

“Hey there, sunshine,” a plump guard says, opening the thick-paned glass door so it swings into the hallway. He leans into the metal door frame, holding a large stick of beef jerky in one hand, tearing off a chunk between his teeth and chewing so I can hear it.

“The doors are a nice upgrade,” I say through a yawn as I knock on the glass. “They were bars when I was here last.”

He gnaws on the dried meat, unamused. “There’s someone here to pick you up,” he says as he chews, spewing small chunks of meat and saliva as he speaks.

“Aw, so soon?” I bring myself to my feet and stretch—every muscle protests. “Guess I’m not twenty-one anymore, eh?” I ask.

“Maybe you should stop trying to be,” he says. His stone expression remains as such.

“Noted,” I add, and salute him as I step away from the cell, turn around and head toward the station’s lobby to retrieve my sunglasses and cell phone before heading out of the doors.

Blake—my bass guitarist and lifelong best friend—leans against a car I’ve never seen before, opens the back door and gets in without waiting for me to approach him. He slides to the opposite side of the hired car and I slide in next to him, closing the door as the driver pulls away from the curb.

“How bad this time?” I ask, one side of my mouth lifting at the corner.

“You really don’t remember?” he asks.

“No. That was the whole point.” I drop my phone into the breast pocket of my shirt and place my sunglasses over my eyes.

Blake tilts back the top of a box of Marlboro Reds, a flagrant disregard of the No Smoking sticker adhered to the car’s dash. The lingering tobacco smell of the car tells me he’s already broken that rule.

“Never fear,” I say, elbowing him in the arm. “Social media and the news will remind me, I’m sure.”

“If Cooper doesn’t kill you first,” Blake adds, cracking the window and fishing for a Bic in his breast pocket. His words come out draped in a mix of his slightly faded South African accent and the dialect he has picked up during his years in the States.

Blake moved into my house at a time when his mother couldn’t provide for him anymore—right as we started tenth grade and, truthfully, his appearance hasn’t changed much since I met him in junior high. He looks almost the same way now as he did then, down to his stupid blond-tipped faux hawk and slightly spaced teeth. Only now, the tall, slender physique he boasted back then has morphed into a ‘definitely enjoys beer’-type body. Though, the same could be said for me.

The car arrives back at the venue where we are set to have our second show in a back-to-back schedule.

We enter the building and Blake walks ahead of me by about five strides. I am in no condition to keep up. He turns a corner, disappearing from view. As I turn the same corner, Cooper, our band’s manager, is standing there waiting for me. Startled, I jump out of my boots and my stomach takes a drop it can barely handle. I swallow back whatever threatens to make a reappearance.

“Jeez—” I start, but he has no intention of letting me talk.

“Leave,” he says, his eyes an even deeper brown than they usually are, enhanced by the dark bags beneath them. “Go find food, water and a shower. Whatever it is you need to do to clean up and be ready for today.”

“I’ll be ready, Coop. I always am.”

“You should be grateful we have a show today because I can tell you—no, I can promise you—if I didn’t need you today, you would still be sitting in that cell.” Cooper paces the width of the hallway, pausing every few moments to make a hand gesture my direction, as if he can’t walk and shake his fist all at the same time. “You’re lucky the cops here are fans of yours, you know. There will come a day where just being Xander Varro doesn’t get you what you want. Your status won’t get you out of everything forever. The sooner you understand that the better.”

“I had a few drinks. I was having a good time—”

“Drunk and disorderly, disturbing the peace, resisting arrest.” Cooper starts listing off, using his fingers to keep track of all the misdemeanors. “This band can’t keep a publicist because they’re tired of covering for you. You can’t keep yourself out of the negativity and the spotlight. You’re dependent on drama. You’re going to be a father, for crying out loud. When do you plan to grow up, Xander? When is enough, enough?”

He’s right, but I’m too proud to admit it. Cooper’s growl shifts to a hushed pause, allowing me to say my piece or apologize, but I don’t do either, so he continues, filling the silent void.

“This isn’t just about you, you know. Your band counts on you. Your fans count on you. I count on you. Someday your kid will count on you, and you are becoming the kind of guy who can’t be counted on.” His pacing comes to a halt and his eyes soften. His voice quiets, falling so calm that I would almost prefer the yelling. “You have it all, Xander. Everything. Stop trying to throw it all away.”

I nod, a silent response, even though I know Cooper wants more from me. It’s all I have to offer.

“Just go, Xander,” he says. “Come back when you’re ready to be on that stage and not a second sooner.”

“Can you send a car to take me back to the hotel?”

“You can walk.”

I laugh at his joke, but the sound becomes a scoff when I realize he’s serious. I nod without enthusiasm and turn toward the door, slamming my bodyweight into the metal push bar though the signs clearly indicate Emergency Exit Only.

The hotel is only just over a mile away, but I’m still annoyed. These boots definitely were not made for walking. My feet are throbbing by the time I arrive at the lavish hotel doors. The lock clicks as I hold the key card to the door of the hotel room that I was supposed to be long-checked-out of. I lay on the bed longer than I should, ignoring the clothes and other items strewn across it. A red light blinks at the base of the landline phone the hotel provides, most likely a wakeup call ordered by Cooper or a message about the late fees incurred as a result of the ignored check-out. I almost delete it without listening, figuring whatever message it holds is either now irrelevant or I just don’t care what it has to say.

But I click it, and my girlfriend’s voice is on the other end. I smile at first, listening to her words.

“Hey, it’s Mariah.”

But the smile fades to a flatline. Why would she call the hotel and not my cell phone?

“I have something to tell you.”

Love Limits (Love Language #3) by Reese Morrison

Amazon Link - Available in KU
Goodreads Link

Ash wants a Daddy. Zhong wants Ash.

But Zhong knows he can't give Ash what they need. He's asexual, and when he looks for someone special, it should be someone who will be satisfied with what he can offer. Right?

Zhong has never been enough for anyone else, so when the playful sub who loves board games and wants a Daddy bounces into his life, he knows he’ll have to sit on the sidelines.

But as Zhong grows closer to Ash, he learns more about himself. Maybe he can be the Daddy Ash needs. Maybe his love doesn’t have to have limits.

Love Limits contains a caring asexual Daddy, a genderqueer sub, age play, puppy play, sign language and a HFN. Love Lessons and Love Limits share intertwined characters and timelines, and this book should be read only after reading Love Lessons.

My Rating - 5 Stars!

In Love Limits, once again Reese Morrison impresses with complex characters. I love the whole Love Language series so far. With this being the third book in the series, be sure to read them in order.

This part of the series is about Zhong and Ash. It follows the same timeline as Love Lessons so it definitely helps to read both. We learn more about Dustin, and wow, some new things come to light that surprise and confuse Zhong.

Zhong is asexual and panromantic, with the most complicated of emotions. Or I should say, he struggles to understand love and his wants. He's a total cuddle slut, which I came to adore in Love Lessons. And it isn't until now that he learns he was in a relationship with Dustin.

Oh, I adore how clueless and complex Zhong is. His asexual side is beyond perplexing to him.

Add in the multi-layered Ash and things get even more convoluted.

Front and center of this story, and series, is the deaf community. There's plenty about the deaf community and the complexity of dating a hearing person if one is deaf.  I absolutely love and appreciate how much it means to Ash to find friends who are in the community. As Ash had discovered, living in the hearing world has it's own set of complications. I appreciate how much they enjoy finding people who are also deaf.

Ash, oh sweet Ash. Ash is gender queer, born intersex and deaf. Ash longs to find a Daddy for themselves, as well as a handler during puppy time. Talk about a particular and complex set of needs.

There is a whole lot of in depth discussions about polyamory in this book. I won't give anything away. But all the characters understand that for some people polyamory is the best choice. Given Zhong's asexual status, I enjoy the way this is all discussed.

At the heart of the story, Ash desperately wants a Daddy. They're instantly attracted to Zhong, but Zhong is far from Daddy material. Or is he?

I don't want to give anything away, but, damn, these two are so good together. They're such opposites, but their desires and needs mesh well in the end. The journey to get there though is full of doubts, fears, and plenty of internal debate. It isn't easy. But it's worth it.

And oh, the puppy scene is just darling. This is my favorite moment in the book. Most of all, the amount of trust it takes for Ash to become a puppy and lose their ability to communicate is amazing. It's remarkable and absolutely beautiful that Ash can trust Zhong to care for them in this moment.

In addition to all I mentioned above, I love the relationship between Ash and their mom. Omg, the fact that they are so open about their sex life with their mom is truly remarkable. I love it.

Once again, the author excels in developing a multi-layered tale with complex characters. No one is better at writing diverse and unique characters. Sexuality and gender play a large part in who these characters are, and the author wonderfully develops and explores this. Hell, the fact that Ash is intersex and it doesn't matter at all, is stellar!

Love Limits is a sweet and tender romance. Reese Morrison once again impresses and entertains in this romance. This is a must read when you're in the mood for an emotional romance. The heat isn't here for this one, which makes sense given Zhong's sexuality. But the emotions are front and center throughout.

Love Lessons (Love Language #2) by Reese Morrison

Amazon Link - Available in KU

“Come here,” Dustin repeated, his dark eyes serious.
Landon put his hands on his hips and stood his ground. “Make me.”
He knew he was acting like a petulant teenager, but this was Dustin. And with Dustin, he felt safe.
Please, he thought, please, please make me.

Landon doesn’t need anyone. So he’s confident that when he offers to train a nervous, sexy Dom, nothing will come of it.
But Dustin has some things to teach him, too. Because Dustin uses sign language and asks him questions that no one else bothers to ask. Because Dustin wants him, no matter how he presents his gender. Because when Landon rebels, Dustin’s there to keep him in line. And when Dustin makes him obey, it feels real.
Real enough to call Dustin his Daddy.
But these are just lessons, right?

Love Lessons has a nervous new Dom, a confident and genderfluid sub who offers to train him, age play with a middle, a bit of angst, and plenty of sign language. Love Lessons and Love Limits share intertwined characters and timelines, and should be read together.

This expanded edition features a new cover and over 15,000 new words including multiple new and enhanced scenes throughout the book.

My Rating - 5 Stars!

Reese Morrison's Love Lessons, the second book in the Love series, is fabulous.

As in Love Language, the author packs a punch with the complexity of everything tackled in this book. It deals with deafness, ASL, gender-fluidity, BDSM, age play, asexuality, and more. Any of these aspects would have made an interesting read on their own. But, weaving them all together is extraordinary.

It's impressive the way that the author handles Landon, who's a multi-layered character. He can't hear, he's gender fluid, desperately needs age play, and has a lot to learn. I adore the way Landon/Nina switches ages and gender so easily. But even better, is the way that Dustin recognizes the change instantly.

And in a fascinating move, Dustin has an auditory processing disorder, which amps up the importance of ALS and communication in this amazing read.

This story includes a kink club and plenty of kink, including sensory depravation. But, seriously, imagine the issues these two men face with their hearing problems during DBSM, and everything is increased tenfold.

Landon is so damn confident in his sexuality, but he's also unaware of what he wants sexually. With Dustin's help, Landon's able to figure out what works for him, as the two struggle to figure out what works for them together.

Poor Dustin is so damn weighed down by his past. He struggles to trust himself, as well as trusting a sub. It's a complex issue and it's beautiful in the way it's handled.

This is a story of facing fears and taking chances. It includes sexual exploration and relationship struggles. They are so close, but struggle to make things work.

In addition to everything else that is tackled in this book, the author also adds in an emotional issue with Landon teaching deaf students. It's a terrific storyline on it's own, and adds tremendously to this tale.

Overall, Love Lessons is a fantastic read. Definitely check it out when you're looking for a BDSM read with a complex storyline and even complex characters.

Author: Jaime Reese
Genre: M/M Contemporary Romance (stand alone)

Two men. One sweet dream of family and forever.

Gabriel "Bull" del Toro loves his fast-paced globe-trotting job, but aches for an honest relationship and the trust that comes with it. After a few too many heartbreaks, he’s nearly given up hope of finding that special someone.

Until Ben.

Born deaf, Ben is used to working twice as hard for what he wants, but risking a newfound friendship on an impossible dream is scary. After all, there’s one lesson he’s learned: everything is temporary—freedom, friends, even family.

Neither man expects the undeniable spark between them or for every moment together to fuel that connection. For the first time, a happily ever after is within reach, but they must trust that the dream of acceptance, family, and a place to call home is more than a sweet fantasy.

It can be forever.

------------

A Sweet Man is an interconnected standalone within The Men of Halfway House series. It is a story about the power of love, the meaning of family, and never giving up on a dream. It includes wounded hearts, an age-gap romance, and enough cake and sweetness to give you a toothache.

_____________________________________________________________________________

My Rating - 5 Stars!

An avid fan of Jamie Reese's The Men of Halfway House series, I was elated to read A Sweet Man, the seventh book in the series. This is a story with a whole lot of heart and sweetness.

From the first page, Ben is a lovable and broken character. After a series of bad choices and mistakes, he is headed back to Halfway House. And the emotions are out in full force.

Ben's an amazing character with many layers. He's deaf, he's been too trusting in his past, and he's trying to get back to life. He's hard on himself, but needs to give himself some slack. If nothing else, his love for bunny would make him lovable.

Gabe, aka Bull, is an ex service member who is now a bodyguard. He meets Ben through his sister, who happens to love and adore the sweet Ben.

These are two men who are vastly different. Their experiences, size, and opportunities each make them complete opposites. The complex nature of their relationship is fascinating. Ben's been abused in his past and usually would be terrified of the large and strong Gabe. Instead, it's his sexual interest that is front and center.

My favorite aspect of their relationship is the way they calm down and are able to refresh in one another's arms. It is pure and beautiful. I love them individually, and I love them as a couple. Together, they compliment one another perfectly and each make the other a better man.

The author's writing style is wonderful, with multi-layered characters and a fabulous storyline. The pace is great and the dialogue, often in ASL or typed, is impressive.

Ben's deafness is well written, with knowledge and care. The effects of his being deaf are well illustrated. The fascinating aspect however is the way he deals with communicating with people. He is a unique character who actually doesn't have a full understanding of ASL. The manner is which this part of the story unfollows is lovely.

A Sweet Man is a story that mixes romance, some of deaf culture, action and danger. This Jaime Reese book is a stellar addition to The Men of Halfway House. I love everything about this series and can't recommend it enough.

Chapter 1

Mid-January

Ben ran into the bedroom and swung the door shut. He leaned back against the door, gasping each breath while clutching the cell phone to his chest. Seconds. It was all he had before that bastard came barging in to take what he wanted.
Pushing off the door, he leapt over his still packed duffle bag sitting on the floor and wedged his body in the narrow space behind the bed. He grabbed the edge of the bed frame and pushed.
Damn bed wasn’t moving.
He gritted his teeth and pushed harder, finally shoving the bed on its rusty wheels across the carpeted floor. With the bed bumped up against the door, he had a moment of reprieve to take a deep breath.
His eyes burned as he stared at the door and a memory flashed in his mind.
Once his parole had been granted, Sam had asked him to make a simple decision: Halfway House or this place.
Another stupid decision made.
He glanced around the room—at the peeling paint, dirty carpet, and iron bars on the windows. This place wasn’t Halfway House. Both houses were in Miami-Dade County and about an hour apart, but there was a world of distance between them.
Climbing onto the mattress, he knee-walked toward the foot of the bed. Carefully, he inched closer and flattened his hand against the worn faux wood. One pounding thump against the door vibrated against his palm.
Then another and another, each harder than the one before.
He gasped when the mattress shook beneath his knees.
A punch from Jake would cause some damage—he had a pulsing black eye to prove that.
He pulled his hand away. Even though he couldn’t hear it, he imagined each strike came with an accompanying yell. Maybe even a curse. Or two. He crab-walked backward, away from the door now visibly moving with each strike.
He retreated to the wall, keeping his eyes trained on the single point of entry in front of him. First day at the new halfway house and he already had to deal with bullies.
If he were at HH, things would be so different. The house owners would never allow violence under their roof. Julian would have swooped in like some super ninja and caught Jake’s fist midair.
Ben leaned back against the wall and slid down until his ass hit the dirty carpeted floor. He tightened his grip on the cell phone in his hand. The punch to the face had been a small price to pay if he still had his phone.
Correction… His lifeline.
Now he realized why Sam had to gain special permission for him to have one. Every place had different rules and having a cell phone was a violation of this house’s rules. That detail hadn’t clicked until two other residents had practically salivated at the sight of his phone when he had pulled it out from his back pocket to view the incoming text message. Like a pack of wolves, another resident had joined in. In true alpha form, Jake had pushed the three of them aside and taken the lead, delivering a punch to the side of Ben’s face that had shoved him to the ground.
They had expected him to quiver, give in, huddle into a ball or surrender his phone. They hadn’t counted on him tightening the grip on his lifeline or his speedy escape.
He banged his head back against the wall.
Bump, bump, bump.
He was tired of life kicking him in the nuts.
Tired of second-guessing every damn thing he did.
Tired of how he kept making the wrong decisions.
Five years ago, he had trusted the wrong people. Friends had used him as a scapegoat and that had resulted in a grand theft charge. The judge had shown him mercy during sentencing, splitting his time—twelve months in jail and four years on probation.
With the jail time completed, he had ended up at Halfway House while transitioning into his probation term. He had been on the right path afterward for almost two years. He had reconnected with his sister and had moved in with her. He had secured a steady job, working with Shaw.
Until the day he had gotten into a friend’s car during his lunch break.
He hadn’t known the car was stolen. He couldn’t have guessed that one choice would have resulted in a probation violation that would send him to a state prison to complete the remaining two years of his sentence.
He screwed his eyes shut, instantly wincing at the pain of his swelling eye.
He missed Julian and his partner, Matt. He missed Ryan and Shaw, the friends he had made during his stay at Halfway House. But he was too embarrassed to see any of them. Regardless of how many times he had analyzed the situation in his mind, it was his bad decision that had landed him in prison.
He wrapped his arms around his midsection. Times like these, he sought the comfort of his plush bunny. He wasn’t a kid anymore, but the worn plush rabbit was stuffed with family memories. Frayed and patched together like the sole survivor of a zombie experiment, the plush toy was likely lost, just like he felt. Or maybe someone had found it and discarded it with a cringe at its horror-movie-like appearance. It wouldn’t surprise him.
Everything was temporary.
His parents, the few people he thought were friends while growing up. The revolving door of families over the years.
His relationship with his sister.
He leaned his head back against the wall and stared at the ceiling, fighting back the tears. She had warned him to stay out of trouble. He hadn’t even had a chance to apologize to her before getting hauled away. He had burned that bridge. More like annihilated it with C4 for good measure.
After that, nothing had mattered. He didn’t care to see anyone else, even though Shaw had tried to visit him several times.
The sting in his eyes reappeared. He needed to look ahead and deal with this current situation. He shouldn’t have resisted Sam’s insistence on returning to Halfway House. But the thought of seeing the disappointment in Julian’s pale green eyes, or his partner’s sad smile, tore through Ben’s heart. He couldn’t risk disillusioning every person who might care. Matt would take Ben’s failure personally. And Julian would console his partner and share that pain.
He couldn’t do that to them.
The phone in his hand vibrated, pulling him from his thoughts. He swiped at the screen, blinking a few times. His heartbeat quickened as panic set in. His vision was a little fuzzy. Dammit. The black eye was going to be a problem. He needed the clarity. Otherwise, he’d have trouble reading text messages and other people’s lips. He pulled the phone closer and farther away, hoping to pinpoint a spot in his line of sight that would make the display clearer to read the new text message.
You didn’t respond. You ALWAYS respond. I’m on my way.
The knot in his chest lessened reading Sam’s words. His reintegration officer hadn’t given up on him after dropping him off at this nightmare of a house a few hours ago. He glanced up at the door when the bed shifted. Jake was pissed—pissed enough to hit the door hard enough to move the bed on the carpet.
He had to get out of here. Now.
He quickly texted a reply. I can’t stay here. His attention snapped up when the bed shifted again. He kicked out his feet and pushed them against the bed frame, hoping to add some additional resistance until Jake tired himself out. Please hurry, he wrote in another text before Sam had a chance to respond.
Life hadn’t been kind, but he managed the best he could, always trying to find the good in others.
But the people outside that door, in this place…there was no good here to find.
Ben closed his eyes and held his phone close to his chest, willing Sam to respond. He gasped when the phone vibrated moments later. He blinked a few times, focusing his vision, and releasing a shaky breath at Sam’s reply.
I’ll be there soon. I called Aidan. He’s on his way.
Ben’s shoulders slumped. Relief or embarrassment, he wasn’t sure. He battled with the nagging tug in the back of his mind, worried about seeing the detective again, the one who had taken the time to help Ben reconnect with his sister after so many years.
But he’d take the embarrassment. Aidan was the only man who could likely stop Jake with a simple glare, and make a few phone calls to push Sam’s request through the system to move Ben elsewhere. Right now, he’d take the rescue any way he could get it. Welcomed it with open arms, even if he needed to beg or subject himself to a reprimanding lecture.
He wouldn’t survive here.
They would eventually take his phone and wouldn’t care about the damage they left in their wake. A black eye could easily lead to a broken arm or hand if he continued to resist. Without his phone or use of his hands, he wouldn’t be able to communicate in the hearing world.
He closed his eyes and leaned his head back against the wall.
After leaving his childhood home, there had only been one place where he had felt safe.
Right now, that was exactly where he needed to be.
He just hoped Sam arrived in time to take him there.

She has a weakness for broken, misunderstood heroes and feels everyone deserves a chance at love and life. An avid fan of a happy ending, she believes those endings acquired with a little difficulty are more cherished.
