Book 1

Order of Play, Book 1

The world of men’s professional tennis has been ruled by the same six men for more than a decade. There have been a handful of shock upsets and victories snatched by underdogs, but they’re few and far between. Now, the next generation are done being denied and have come knocking.

When the time comes, Soren Norgaard knows that the world expects him to lead the charge and take his place at the top of his sport. He’s focused and lethal on the court, until he isn’t. Sometimes the past, no matter how comfortable and familiar, doesn’t fit anymore and needs to be left behind. Soren’s past doesn’t want to let him go, but his future is coming fast whether he’s ready or not.

Elias Engström has been in love with Soren for as long as he has known him. The race for titles, for glory and their day in the spotlight has always been less all-consuming because he knows that there is an entire life stretching out when he leaves the court for the last time. A life that, for the first time, might include Soren in the way Elias wants him. Everything he wants is within reach, if Elias is willing to fight for it.

Elias steals into the locker room before Soren’s match against Tyrone Ioannou.

It’s a long-standing tradition before finals. He’d done the same at Indian-Wells and Miami too, and Soren had done the same before Elias had gone onto court in pursuit of the Paris Masters title the previous season.

Some small part of him thinks that without it—the lingering embrace and Soren’s bright, laughing face in his mind’s eye as he walked the tunnel and onto the court to face Tiago Castillo—he never would have won.

He hopes he can give Soren the same.

Soren looks up when Elias slips through the door and pushes away from the wall.

Elias crosses the distance between them and pulls Soren to him, cradling the back of his head in one hand and breathing in deeply.

“You can do it,” he says against Soren’s ear, and holds him there for a heartbeat longer than he intends to. When he pulls back, Soren’s eyes are intent upon him.

He smiles and taps the underside of Soren’s chin with the back of his knuckles.

“Go and show him that you are to be feared, solstråle.”

Soren nods, his face still serious. “I will,” he says and tilts his head to the side.

He studies Elias for a long, weighted moment, and then his lips curl up in the corners.

Elias takes a step back, and the cool air rushing between them is like a slap to the face. He blinks first, and his own smile tugs the corners of his mouth up.

“I cannot wait to see you lift that cup again,” he says honestly.

“I will not disappoint you.” Soren ducks his head and does a half-turn back and away from Elias.

Elias catches his hand, squeezing just once.

“You could never.” He drops Soren’s hand and steps back. “I will see you out there.”

Soren’s gaze on him is a weight that follows all the way into the stands and to the box.

There had been two seats open for him when he’d returned to the court, and Elias had been torn.

Levi Bauer is by all accounts, including Elias’s, his best friend on the tour. They have known each other for the better part of the last fifteen years. He is a regular fixture in Levi’s box at games, especially finals.

In comparison, he has only known Soren Norgaard the last nine years.

Elias has also been in love with him that entire time.

He ends up in Soren’s box for the last six games and resigns himself to Levi giving him grief for it for the foreseeable future. He can’t even find it in him to dread it, not when Soren turns to the box with his sweat-slick hair sticking up, flushed cheeks, and a beaming smile as the umpire calls, “Six–three, seven–five, Norgaard!”

The only reason Elias makes eye contact with Levi, is that Levi is beside Soren, their arms slung about each other’s shoulders as they lean their heads together. He shrugs one shoulder as Levi raises an eyebrow pointedly, rolling his eyes.

What can he say? He’s always been led by his heart, especially where Soren is concerned.

When he shifts his gaze back to Soren, his bright eyes are waiting and his smile softens into something smaller, more private. Soren has stepped away from Levi’s side to allow him to shake the umpire’s hand first, and Levi is out of Elias’s direct line of sight, which is a relief. He doesn’t need to give the Austrian more ammunition.

Elias’s own smile softens too, and he prays that none of the cameras catch the undoubtedly smitten look on his face as Soren breaks their eye contact to shake the umpire’s hand and move back to his bench. He’s never been able to control it, and it doesn’t matter how many times Levi tries to convince him he has a better poker face than he thinks, he is sure his feelings for Soren are written all over in neon lights.

Over and Again (Casus Fortuitus #4) by Brooke Edwards

Blurb

It’s been a hell of a year in New York City. Detective Cohen Bailey is determined to put Jake Bartlett, the last remaining threat, behind bars for good. To do that, he’s going to need all the help he can get. Their team is still reeling from almost losing two of their own and Cohen knows that if there was ever a chance to prove himself, this is it.

Brock Hart is a pinch-hitter for the Department of Justice, a mobile asset that moves with the big cases and steps in to clean up messes when they occur. Prosecuting isn’t all done in the courtroom, and Brock’s got a personal connection of his own to this particular case. Detective Cohen Bailey is attractive, competent and more importantly, half Brock’s age. Brock’s better off sticking to his long-time no-strings arrangement than risking it all on Cohen.

The more they dig into the web surrounding Bartlett, the more certain they become that there’s something bigger going on. Neither of them have the time to fall into bed together, let alone fall in love, but if there’s anything Brock’s learned it’s that sometimes, the best choices are the ones you don’t mean to make.

My Rating - 5 Stars!

If you've been following my blog, you'll know that I am in love with Brooke Edward's Casus Fortuitus series. Over and Again, the fourth book in the series, in the perfect addition.

In this book we read a lot about Brock and Cohen, as well as seeing all our favorite characters return. This series have given us a whole cast that I will miss a lot.

Once again, the author treats us to many twists and turns, keeping the readers fully captivated till the end. In addition to all the action and suspense, there's plenty of romance and humor.

The book has such a realistic feel to it, making it so darn enjoyable. It's easy to become fully engrossed in the action, the emotions, and the settings.

As Over and Again is the ending for this series, I am sad to see it end. If you haven't read it yet, be sure to check it out.

Cause and Effect (Casus Fortuitus #3) by Brooke Edwards

Blurb

In the aftermath of a psychopath's obsession-fuelled murder spree through New York, Detective Daniel Callahan feels like he's been hit by a wrecking ball. It turns out that watching your best friend and your boss fall in love only to nearly lose it all takes a toll on a guy's emotional stability.

Peter Saracen has an out-of-control crush on the belligerent detective who seems to want nothing more than to toss him into a cell and throw away the key. When the body of an unidentified gang member is pulled from the East River and an old nemesis breaks out of prison, Peter finds himself on a whole new collision course with Daniel.

The line between personal and professional begins to blur. The dangers of the present take aim at the fragile possibility of Daniel and Peter's happily-ever-after, while ghosts of the past threaten the deepening bond between Daniel's boss James Carter and Assistant US Attorney, Derek Moore. With everything against them, there might not be any coming back from this.

My Rating - 5 Stars!

Upon reading Cause and Effect, I am once again reminded of Brooke Edwards' brilliance.

Cause and Effect is an amazing thriller. And oh, how I enjoy Daniel and Peter! We also get to know a ton about Derek and James, which is fantastic.

Peter is such a complex character, and is fascinatingly human, aka flawed. I love the dynamics between Daniel and Peter. They compliment one another so well.

As for Derek and James, if this was real life, I'd give them my own money to go on a secluded vacation.

All in all, Cause and Effect (and the whole series) should be made into an action movie. It's thrilling, riveting, and full of action. Brooke Edwards absolutely excels at writing detailed events, complex situations, and wonderful characters. Her writing style is perfect for this type of novel. She blends action with emotions, danger with humor, and suspense with wit. She will keep you on the edge of your seat. Be sure not to read when you're not going to be distracted. If you miss one thing, you'll be missing a lot.

And now I need to dive into Book 4 to see what happens next!

Law and Disorder (Casus Fortuitus #2) by Brooke Edwards

Blurb

James Carter and Derek Moore fought their way through attraction and misunderstandings to get to where they are today. Sure, they’re still figuring out how to make things work between their careers and families, but their whole world is rose-tinted with the glow of new love.

Reality hits with the force of a speeding truck when a criminal starts waging a campaign of terror against the justice system. Suddenly law enforcement officers and lawyers all across the city are living in fear as their careers put them right in the cross-hairs of a deranged killer and James and Derek’s honeymoon period falls to ruins.

With James’s protectiveness driving a wedge between them and Derek pulling away as the target on his back grows even bigger, their future is thrown into jeopardy. While Derek struggles with demons from his past, it's up to James to catch the killer and put them back on the path to their happily ever after.

My Rating - 5 Stars!

Brooke Edwards' Law and Disorder is a fantastic follow-up to her novella Men's Rea, where we first meet James and Derek.

Now, as they move forward with their relationship, they are in danger as they are trying to catch a murderer. This book is definitely more of a mystery than a romance, but everything happening does threaten their relationship.

Law and Disorder is a good, entertaining story, with a great pace and a whole lot of events happening. Don't blink, as this author really gives you your money's worth. Her writing style is impressive, as she is a huge stickler for details, yet never bores the reader, instead using these details to add to the story.

I love James and Derek, so my only complaint would be that I would have loved more of them. They have great chemistry and are so fun together. As well, I adore the secondary characters and all they add to events, including their humor.

With Law and Disorder, Brooke Edwards gifts us with a whole lot of twists and turns, keeping the tale thrilling and intriguing. I loved it and recommend it to fans of suspenseful romances.

Mens Rea (Casus Fortuitus #1) by Brooke Edwards

Blurb

James Carter is a career cop who married young, became a widower young, and then his life revolved around his son and his job. Young is a recurring theme, he thinks, when he meets the considerably younger-than-him AUSA Derek Moore. For the first time in years, James finds himself subject to the whims of his heart.

The path to love between a hotshot lawyer and a veteran cop was never going to be smooth, not in the real world. Criminals, misunderstandings and a complete lack of communication stand in their way too. Both too stubborn to budge, and utterly convinced that their feelings aren’t reciprocated, James and Derek themselves are the biggest obstacles to their own happiness.

A murder case might be just enough to force them to get their act together.

Previously published by Dreamspinner Press in the 2015 Daily Dose Anthology. This is a second edition with a new cover, significant expansion and revision.

Review
My Rating - 5 Stars!

Brooke Edwards' Mens Rea is a wonderful novella that packs a lot into it's 50 pages.

James and Derek meet when they work a case together. James is interested in the younger man. Very interested. Of course, he's not sure how Derek feels.

Their story is a fun, good light mystery that contains a whole lot of humor. There's a good group of secondary characters who add a lot to the story, as well as adding some fun laughs.

I found myself loving this book, both the developing relationship and the wonderful banter. Heck, it's worth a read just for the Derek's introduction to James' son.

Men's Rea is a superb start to Brooke Edwards' Casus Fortuitus series. If Brooke can pack this much into a short story, I can't wait to see what else she does with this series!

When Fate Falls Short by Brooke Edwards

Blurb

Childhood sweethearts Nathan Maxwell and Sean Adams took ten years to realize they belonged together, followed by ten years of bliss. When it is snatched away, Sean is left alone with the aftermath. Lost and grieving in a world that doesn’t make sense without Nathan by his side, he struggles to keep himself afloat… until he meets Jesse Lawrence.

The shadow of a congenital heart defect has hung over Jesse like a dark cloud all his life. Nathan’s death saves Jesse’s life by providing the heart Jesse needs to survive, and a chance encounter between their best friends plants Jesse in Sean’s orbit. But how well can a love triangle between a dead man, his grieving lover, and the one with his heart beating in his chest possibly turn out? Real feelings and pure intentions might not be enough.

A Bittersweet Dreams title: It's an unfortunate truth: love doesn't always conquer all. Regardless of its strength, sometimes fate intervenes, tragedy strikes, or forces conspire against it. These stories of romance do not offer a traditional happy ending, but the strong and enduring love will still touch your heart and maybe move you to tears.

Review
My Rating - 5 Stars!

Wow! Just wow! With When Fate Falls Short, Brooke Edwards will take you on an emotional ride like none you've experienced before.

I fell in love with Nathan and Sean immediately. They way they meet and become friends is absolutely adorable. Their budding friendship, and then romance is filled with fun and tender moments. I love them. Completely, utterly love them.

They're just two young men who fall in love after years as best friends. They are each other's world. And then they aren't, as one moment in time changes everything. And Sean is left to pick up the pieces. If he can.

Enter Jesse, who received Nathan's heart. Sweet, sweet Jesse. You can't hate him, just because Nathan had to die in order for him to live. Jesse's own life story is heart-breaking. Literally. You will cry for Jesse too.

I love the writing style, as it hooked me immediately. And I have to admit that I am thrilled the story is the length that it is. If Brooke Edwards had developed this story in a more comprehensive way, I would never have survived. As it is, I am still left broken and gutted by just 64 pages.

When Fate Falls Short is not a happy, uplifting book. Hell, it's main theme centers around what happens when your soulmate dies. You aren't expecting laughs. But, when you're looking for something that will give you all the feels, please do yourself a favor and read this book! It is amazing!
