Ex-Rivals by Zoe Lee

Local Beats, Book 3

Julian Corelli
After fifteen years, I’m back in Chicago for a new job, with enough sass and charm to power the whole city. There are two million people here, and only one I never want to see again. Except who do I come face-to-face with on my very first night back? My ex-rival, my ex-classmate, my ex… nevermind.

Camdon Gaines
As if getting over a breakup isn’t bad enough, the worst person I’ve ever had the displeasure to know is at my favorite club on guys’ night, laughing with my best friends. He’s still the most infuriating man, but at least I faced him, lost my temper a little, and now it’s case closed.

Except now that we’ve crossed paths again, it’s like we’re cosmically handcuffed together. Everyone else thinks he’s the funniest, cleverest man in the city and they want to be his new bestie. But I know the real Julian and there’s no way I can ever trust him again after what he did to me—especially when he’s acting like I’m the one who ruined everything.

This is a 70k word enemies-to-lovers, second chance, slower burn romance with a guaranteed HEA. It’s the third book in the Local Beats series and can be read as a standalone, but is more fun if read in order.

My Rating - 5 Stars!

Ex-Rivals is a wonderful second chance romance by Zoe Lee. I love every single moment of it.

Camden and Julian. I l
ove these two.

When we meet them, they aren't happy to see each other. Their past is a painful secret that leaves them both hurt and bitter all these years later.

The families are friends, with their moms being best friends. I adore the way Camden's friends and sister are charmed by Julian and bring him into their group.

Everything about this story is wonderful. I enjoy the way they start off as enemies and slowly start to bring down their walls.

I always enjoy second chance romances, but especially when the reason things didn't work out the first time are realistic and natural. Their story is one of bad timing and miscommunication, but it's no one's fault. It's just the circumstances. They are the victims of their secrets and events out of their control.

Written in alternating first person pov, I love the writing style. The author fully brings everything to life, including the large gatherings and the scars. The secondary characters are fabulous, keeping me laughing and entertained.

There are some serious moments, but the author's humor helps keep things much lighter than you'd expect.

Ex-Rivals is everything I was hoping it would be. This Zoe Lee gem had me intrigued at the start, and I quickly found myself mesmerized. I couldn't put this book down. It's perfectly sweet and completely feel good.

Chapter 1

Julian

“Hello, gorgeous,” the bartender cooed as I handed over my AmEex Black Card to start a tab.

He was gorgeous too, like a ballerina who could’ve been anywhere from mid-thirties like me to mid-fifties, with a vague accent I couldn’t place over the loud, thumping music in the club.

I leaned over the bar and he dipped his head, offering me his ear. “I’m in the mood for wine.”

“If you can wait, I’ve got something in the back to match your taste,” he answered.

“I’ll wait for you all night,” I replied, letting my chin skim his jaw.

He pulled back with a laugh, pressing the card into my fingers, and waggled a finger at me. “Darling, I’m one of the owners, and I’m very happy already. But aren’t you an angel. I might have a few favorite patrons here tonight who would be more than happy to meet you.”

No offense taken, I slid my card back into my wallet. “I am new in town.”

With a nod, he ducked under the bar’s pass through and went to get my wine, while I pivoted to perch an elbow on the bar and survey the thick crowd at Local Beats tonight.

Eliott was looking for a steady companion to share his simple life when a cute guy literally fell out of the sky and into his world. Gavin wasn’t the kind of man he was normally attracted to, but Eliott couldn’t resist the challenging glint in his eyes.

The last thing Gavin expected was to be interested in the stuffy lawyer whose car he nearly crashed into during a skydiving mishap. Gavin bet Eliott he can get him to love something dangerous, even though he was afraid a man like Eliott would never be able to take him seriously.

Attraction and curiosity pulled them together, while their outlooks on life pushed them apart. When there’s no way to prepare for love, will they surrender to its chaos?

Eliott

But the skydiver was moving too fast, right for me.

I reflexively flinched in anticipation of the skydiver colliding with my car.

But with a roar, they yanked their knees up to their chest, and I twisted in my seatbelt to watch helplessly as they sort of skipped as they hit the field alongside the road.

After turning on my emergency lights, I hurried towards the skydiver as their parachute suddenly collapsed to the ground behind them like a snapdragon being pinched.

As I came closer, the skydiver finally got the harness off and tore off their helmet. An incredibly thick, long braid with purple streaks snapped out in the wind like a windsock. That led me to deduce that the skydiver was a very slender woman, until she turned.

I inhaled sharply.

It wasn’t a very slender woman. It was a very slender man, his snow-pale skin cleaving brutally to every aristocratic bone he had. His eyes looked purple and they snapped with energy, unnatural and magnetic, and I figured they had to be contacts to match the hair dye.

“What?” he snapped. “Never seen a guy with long hair before?”

“I’ve seen men with long hair,” I disagreed with a subtle sniff, which got stuck in my throat when he unzipped his jumpsuit in one long ruthless pull. He stripped it off his wiry arms and shoved it down his legs the way I removed my pants and briefs before I went to bed. I had never been swayed by a pretty face or a fit body, preferring a clever, sharp mind, but damned if I didn’t admire the hell out of efficiency and unselfconsciousness.

Scowling at the thought, I added, “I’ve just never seen a skydiver nearly hit my car.” The statement came out more hysterical than I would have preferred, but this guy had come hurtling out of the sky and almost smashed against the hood of my station wagon.

The skydiver laughed roughly as he peeled off his gloves. “Sorry about that,” he said, clearly not. “But I didn’t end up a splat on your windshield, so it was all pretty badass, don’t you think?” he asked rhetorically, his wide, thin mouth curling up wickedly on one side.

Annoyed by the lick of heat low in my stomach at the rebelliousness, I argued, “No, it was dangerous.”

Asher From the second Lucas Carlson shows up in my garage for band practice, I’m drawn in by his eyes, his awkward rambling, and his incredible musical talents. But we share a best friend, and he’s only our temporary drummer while he’s in Chicago for a summer internship. It should be easy to ignore the way he brings something out in me that no one has before.

Lucas Asher Bernthal is a grumpy stockbroker whose band, Signal Fire, is vital to my best friend’s happiness. I don’t want to mess it up for her, so all I have to do is drum and keep my head down. It should be easy not to crush on a man so beyond my grasp, who writes lyrics that pierce straight through me.

Despite all of the reasons to stay away, we’re drawn together and bring something new out in each other. Every song pulls us closer together, but we won’t be bandmates forever.

This is the first book in the Local Beats Series, an 80,000 word MM romance featuring musicians with day jobs, a night club, and lots of songs, with a guaranteed HEA and no cliffhanger.

Ex-Bandmates Teaser 2

My Rating - 4 Stars!

Ex-Bandmates, the first book in the Local Beats series, is an interesting romance by Zoe Lee. And damn, the cover is hot.

This story begins with a summer romance between the older Asher and the younger Lucas. As Lucas is a replacement member in their band for the summer, the two allow themselves to have a summer fling.

And then comes the breakup. And the end of a friendship.

Meeting up again through their mutual friends, as they share a best friend, they have a second chance together. If they can get past the anger and resentment. If they can learn to communicate better.

Asher and Lucas are two men who struggle to lay everything on the line. Their tale is a great reminder to make sure you both show and tell someone how you feel. They are complex men with well explained reasons for why they act the way they do. But, damn, they struggle to mesh.

As for sex, these two are sizzling in the bedroom. Ohhh...so hot. Like, seriously explosive together.

Through their time apart, and the hard fought happy ending, there is plenty of character growth. They both learn a lot during their time apart, but still have to fight to be together again. I will warn you that these men are stubborn, aren't the best at communication, but especially bad at listening. They have some unfinished business and need to find a way to be right for one another.

I definitely enjoy the uniqueness of these men, as the band is not a professional, famous band. Rather, these are real people who have everyday jobs and play in a band on the side.

As well, I enjoy the uniqueness of the men. There are not your cookie cutter characters which helps keeps things moving. Lucas's upbringing and his musical talent is intriguing, and Asher's is intriguing in his background.

Told in alternating 1st person pov, the feelings and emotions come out fully. It did start slow and took me a bit to get fully invested though, but I am thrilled I stuck it out. The author includes some delightful side characters who up the enjoyment factor, although they make things more confusing in the beginning. Later on, once you have everyone sorted you out, you will love them.

There is a lot going on in this storyline, and one needs to pay close attention to get caught up in all the feelings.

Ex-Bandmates is a nice read. Be sure to check out this Zoe Lee book the next time you're in the mood for some angst with your second chance romance. This is a romance where nothing is easy and happiness is never a guarantee. There's plenty of heat, sexiness, and sweetness to satisfy.

ASHER

“Hey hey,” Amy said once we were up there, shimmying a bit. “It’s about to get soulful up here!”

Dan pushed Lucas so that it was Dan, Lucas, and me ranged just behind and stage right from the girls. “I hope you know how to shake it, Lucas,” he said with a giant, happy beaming smile.

Before Lucas could seem to decide if he was going to puke or shake it, the song started.

I grinned, immediately putting one hand on my hip and bopping my hip and shoulder, recognizing the opening bars of Aretha Franklin’s ‘Chain of Fools’ right away.

Lucas hissed when the girls started belting it out.

I looked over and found him doing the exact same classic soul back-up singers’ moves that Dan and I were executing, while Dan and I also chimed in with our part of the song. Lucas’s mouth shaped the words perfectly, but I knew he wasn’t actually singing because I was too close to miss it if he were.

Leslie moved to dance right up in Lucas’s face, her hips swiveling and her finger crooked, making the audience whistle and cheer, and I heard Tilda yelling loud and clear from our table.

Lucas’s chest started rising and falling like it had when we’d shared my shower, but it wasn’t lust… not exactly. When Leslie took a step back towards the mic, it was as though Lucas was hooked to her and had no choice but to take a step forward, even though I could see him gulp, paling.

Leslie kept her eyes on Lucas in challenge and then, with a flourish, invited him up to the mic.

Lucas’s eyes closed for a beat and then…

He sang.

Sang.

Oh fuck. I swear my cock turned to fucking steel—titanium—whatever the hardest metal in the known universe was—within one measure of him fucking singing. It was more than hitting all the right notes, the little trills and gentle vibrato of Aretha’s voice, more than the way his voice filled up the space like it was coming from everywhere at once, more than the way he was working his hips from side to side like was in Dreamgirls. It was the way that he utterly understood what he was singing, as if he had written the song himself, experienced this himself and knew every nuance of it, as if it was happening to him at that very moment, without it being melodramatic at all.

The audience had to be going wild, but I wasn’t paying attention to anything but the fraction of his face I could see, and Leslie’s full profile, the visible eye full of tears.

The song ended and Lucas bolted off the stage, pushing through the people complimenting him, and made for the bar as if his ass were on fire—or under fire.

“Oh fuck,” I whimpered.

Amy grabbed my arm and hauled me back to our table and I went along like a zombie, letting her shove me into one of the chairs when we got there. Dan patted my shoulder as if he pitied me.

“Oh fuck,” I whimpered again, slumping until my too-hot forehead settled on the rim of a water glass. “It’s not just the voice, it’s—”

“Damn, Asher,” Tilda whispered, “you are so fucked.”

“Leslie, you evil witch,” Lucas shouted from behind me, but I didn’t move, and he probably didn’t notice because he was ranting now, his shouts lowering in volume to whisper-yells, “I cannot believe you did that to me, that was a fucking cheap shot, and to drag Amy into your scheme!”

You’re a fucking evil witch,” Amy cried. “How could you hide that voice from us!”

“Dude,” Dan said in his heartbroken, guilt-inducing tone. “Not cool. Penalty box.”

“No, he can’t sing if he’s in the penalty box,” Amy argued, fucking up Dan’s sports metaphor without noticing. “You’re an amazing drummer, but like… why…”

“How about a round of shots?” Leslie interjected as if that would derail things for long.

“You’re not off the hook!” Lucas grumbled, but he seemed like he was already losing steam. Leslie clicked off towards the bar to get the shots, and then he asked, “What’s with Asher?”

Tilda, Amy, and Dan snickered and I gave them the finger without moving otherwise, not even knowing if Lucas could see it or not since my eyes were still squarely aimed at the table.

Tilda took a little bit of pity on me and said, “Just brooding like usual. Ignore him.”

Lucas’s hand appeared in my field of vision, his pinkie tapping a quick beat. “Asher?” he checked in very quietly, as the heat of his body sizzled my arm and neck and ear nearest to him. “Are you okay? You’re just kind of… looking defeated over there.”

“Shots!” Leslie exclaimed, saving me from having to come up with a response.

They shot the shots, while I didn’t move, staring at Lucas’s hand now. In the grand scheme of things, it was an ordinary looking hand. Maybe the fingers were a little more graceful, the veins a little more prominent, the freckles a little less common, but it was still just a hand. At the same time my brain knew that, other parts of me, less intelligent and more fucking unrealistic, head-in-the-clouds, knew that Lucas’s hand was extraordinary, magical. It was one tool that he used to express himself, to display his talent and his skill, to punctuate his words, and to show desire and care.

If I was this obsessed with his hand, then how obsessed was I with the rest of him?

ASHER

“I already know all your songs, dude,” Lucas claimed.

Shooting him an incredulous look, I rolled my shoulders.

With a shrug, one corner of that lush mouth curled up, sly and knowing, and my stomach dropped even as he said cockily, “I’m an incredible drummer and I do know all your songs. You’re lucky I’m in town because you’d be screwed for this gig you’ve got on Saturday if I couldn’t fill in.”

Closing my eyes, trying not to enjoy Lucas’s endearing combination of mature confidence and immature sense of humor, I let a growl seep out of my throat.

“That’s a good growl for a man with such a mild tenor,” he commented.

“Okay!” Dan chirped, giving me a pleading look. “Can we start with ‘Promises,’ maybe?”

Amy tipped her head at Lucas as if to prompt him.

Lucas settled on Eli’s stool, then shook his shoulders and arms out and cracked his neck. He pulled a pair of drumsticks out of his messenger bag and scooted the stool farther from the kit, stretching out one sneaker to test the distance to the kick drum. He looked up to where all of us were watching him, and then he said as if we were the insane ones in this scenario, “Leslie starts ‘Promises.’”

I shot Leslie an impatient look and started, my voice strung out, “Leslie, for f*ck’s—”

But then the timer on my cell went off.

“Is it your pizza?” Dan asked as his face split into a toothy, hungry grin.

“I made lasagna,” I muttered, and Dan and Amy moaned in delight.

“Asher, I didn’t know you were domestic,” Lucas gasped dramatically as he twirled his drumsticks like a show-off. “Is it meat or veggie? No, wait, surprise me.”

“Why would you know anything about me?” I grumbled.

Lucas laughed again. This time he threw his head back, baring a long neck, and I couldn’t stop my mouth from drying out or my throat almost clicking when I swallowed.

“Seriously?” he all but yelped, his cheeks going splotchy red. He whirled on Leslie and accused, “Haven’t you told him anything about me?” He turned back to me so fast I got whiplash, and said, “I’ve been hearing about you since Leslie met all of you and you started the band. They’ve come up to Wisconsin like a dozen times to hang out, go camping, and spend the holidays at Leslie’s parent’s house. Dan and I took this epic Harold and Kumar kind of road trip—never mind that for now—”

The timer blared again and I inhaled and shot out a quick breath, grasping for patience as I dug out my cell and stabbed the button to end the timer. Then I stalked into my kitchen, switched on the oven light, and bent to check the lasagna, which was the perfect amount of crispy for Leslie and Amy.

From the garage, Leslie said with her icy-hot sarcasm on perfect point, “I have no idea how Asher could forget a single detail I’ve shared about you, because you’re so memorable.”

Amy snorted and played a high wa-waaaa on her guitar, making the four of them snicker.

“Hey Leslie, how did your annual review go at work?” Dan asked earnestly while I lunged to grab the potholders off their hook, snorting despite myself. “You said you were going to talk to them about a raise maybe.” There was a pause while I set the pan on top of the stove, and then he added, like he couldn’t help it, “Totally can’t blame you if you decided not to ask though, that’s intimidating.”

“I can blame my boss for saying no when I asked though,” Leslie snarked a little bitterly.

“Dude,” Lucas said, from right behind me.

I jerked, the oven door banging into the meat of my thigh just over my knee.

“F*cking shit,” I hissed, rubbing the stinging skin as I glared at my oven door.

Lucas skidded into my periphery, hands hovering somewhere near the corner of the stove. “You aren’t bleeding, are you? Because I am a very manly man, with like half a Master’s degree and shit, but...” He swallowed hard, his sharp Adam’s apple bobbing when his throat constricted.

I found myself shaking my head and reassuring him even though I was the one who’d gotten hurt because the kid walked as quietly as a damn ninja, apparently. “I’m not bleeding.”

“That’s good—ah, good thing you have thighs like a lumberjack or something.”

I straightened and crossed my arms over my chest, one eyebrow trailing high.

“See?” Lucas asked. One eye squinted in accusation while his pouty mouth curled the very slightest bit on the right side. “You look like a lumberjack, which is kind of what Wolverine was in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which is not the best example of Wolverine, but it’s okay, you kind of look like Wolverine anyway, with the muscles and shoulders and beard and, Jesus, that eyebrow—”

“Lucas,” I interrupted. I made my voice as low and firm as possible.

“Yep, right,” he stuttered, holding up his hands in surrender and taking a few exaggerated steps back. “I’ll stop telling the incredibly straight lead singer of my new band—temporary new band, I meant, obviously!—about how he’s hot like Wolverine and just grab some plates and shit.”

While I was honestly caught up trying to decide which part of his rambling was the stupidest, he dove for the stack of plates and the shaker of red pepper flakes I’d already gotten out before fleeing at top speed. Dumbly, I looked down at myself. “Lumberjack,” I scoffed, then made a salad and cut up the lasagna, while the others came into the living room, bickering about a movie.
