My Rating - 5 Stars!

Gifts for the Season is an amazing book. This multi-author anthology is sweet, tender, and beautiful. if you love Christmas and winter stories, you will love this collection.

Several authors take us on a bonus journey with their already established characters. And omg, I loved them all. It's a wonderful gift when authors give us little extras like these. If you haven't read their older books though, you will not be lost at all. You will just love the sweet stories and be introduced to the amazingness of the authors.

Some authors wrote all new short stories. And there's equally as wonderful. Each of the couples are well developed, with the reader never missing any of the buildup.

I highly recommend Gifts for the Season. Not only will you be getting an amazing collection of winter and Christmas romances, but all the proceeds go to the Trevor Project. Basically, it's a win-win.

It’s been a long seventeen years but Herschel Wood Jr. is finally a free man and he’s looking forward to reconnecting with his old cellmate, Bishop Stockley, who promised him a place to stay and some help getting back on his feet. Wood had a good life once upon time when he’d owned one of the most successful tattoo shops on the Virginia Beach Oceanfront – until a fatal accident that was his fault cost him everything.

Now at forty-six years old, all Wood wants is to work in another shop on the beach and find a mature, easygoing man to settle down with. But when he gets to his new place and finds he has to share the small trailer with Bishop’s childhood friend, he wasn’t expecting a sexy, smart-mouthed brat that enjoys pushing a man to his limits.

Wood pressed in tight until there was only misunderstanding between them, his mouth mere inches from Trent’s parted lips. “You wanted to get a reaction out of me you annoying, immature little shit… now you’ve got one.”

Trent Armstrong has never been considered a catch. He’s a twenty-nine year old laborer, an ex-con, and not the easiest person to get along with. He’s used to being the one people cast to the side when they're done with him. Everyone he’s ever cared about has walked out of his life without a backward glance, so he’s used to the loneliness. His foul mouth and quick temper are a great defense mechanism and an easy way to hide his hurt.

From the moment the tattooed, silver-haired man walked into the house there had been nothing but tension, side-eyeing, and sparks between them. Trent has always held back a side of himself that he’s terrified to explore, and without warning Wood’s voice, his maturity, that maddening scent, and even his damaged past all trigger feelings that Trent thought he’d buried deep long ago.

Trent went completely still when Wood dragged his nose over his forehead and down the side of his face. His voice was shaky, and his breaths were hot and swift along Wood’s throat. “What the hell are you doing?”

“I’m doing what you want me to do.” Wood whispered. “I’m playing your bullshit game, Trent.”

The True Lover's Stories are connected standalones. Each title features a different couple but will contain previously mentioned characters.

No multiple pairings. No cliffhanger. Ends with a HEA.

Note: This is a steaming agnsty, age gap, new-to-love romance.

My Rating - 5 Stars!

Wood, the second book in the A True Lover's Story series, is another fabulously gripping read. AE Via captured my heart with this tender tale of two flawed men falling in love.

Although this story could probably be read as a standalone, if you haven't yet read book one, Bishop, stop and do so now. That book is magnificent and will help set up this story.

Wood, fresh out of prison after 17 years behind bars, seeks out his friend Bishop for help. His story thoroughly explores the struggles to re-enter society with the stigmas of being an ex-con attached to one's name. The author excels in exploring these issues, including making amends to those hurt, along with guilt, grief, regret, and remorse. It's a heavy story that definitely requires the reader to be in the right mindset before reading it, so be warned.

Both men have a complicated past, with plenty of inner struggles. They are well developed, with realistic issues and personalities that fully come to life. I already fell for Wood, as his story is just tragic, but Trent's background is also something that explains his prickly actions and makes me want to hug him.

As for the romance, Wood and Trent get off to an awkward start, as they certainly don't mesh well. Their tale is one of forced proximity that brings the men closer together. The age gap is fun and a nice addition to their relationship. And as for the chemistry between the men, well damn, it's intense and hot. They are spectacular together and will leave you happy to have spent time with them.

And then there are the secondary characters, who add a lot to the story, as well as bantering with the men throughout. I love it all.

Wood is a wonderful read. AE Via impresses in this story of learning from one's past and growing from it. Don't miss this one the next time you are looking for a great, serious story, with a happy ending. I can't wait for the next book in this amazing series.

“Are you fucking crazy?”Trent hissed through clenched teeth, but the nerve he’d had behind his earlier words were gone, now replaced with caution…and lust.

“I asked you politely not to call me that. Now, I’m telling you. Don’t. Do it. My name is Herschel Wood, Jr. No middle name. You can call me Herschel, or Wood, that’s it. I would’ve told you that if you’d bothered to ask.” Wood fumed. He had his forearm across Trent’s chest, pushing his back into the closet door at the end of the dark hallway. He couldn’t believe what he was doing, but how dare Trent drive him to the edge like this? Wood pressed in so tight until there was only air and misunderstanding between them, his mouth mere inches from Trent’s parted lips. “You wanted to get a reaction out of me, you annoying, immature little shit…now you’ve got one.”

Trent’s eyes blazed as he tried to shove off the door, but Wood held him in check with his mass. “Fuck you.”Trent grunted, his hot gaze lasered on Wood’s lips.

Wood gave him a smirk and enjoyed as Trent squirmed even more against him. “You think I don’t know the game you’re playing? Maybe no one else does—even though I taught Bishop better—but I can see right through your transparent ass, Trent. So damn clearly.”

Trent’s masked desires were obvious—Wood had seen it the moment he’d laid eyes on him. He knew he hadn’t been wrong. But he’d wanted to leave Trent off-limits. Bishop just wanted them to be friends, but Wood was afraid he was finally going to have to tell his buddy that it wasn’t going to happen. The four of them wouldn’t be hanging out together all the time. There was too much screwed-up shit going on with Trent, and Wood deserved some peaceful days. He didn’t have the patience to put up with crap from hesitant men anymore. He had no doubt that Trent was pushing his buttons…because he wanted Wood to push his in return.

“Wood,” Trent snarled, as he clutched tightly to his shoulders with both hands.

Wood’s answer was another cunning smile. Did Trent even realize that he wasn’t pushing Wood away, he was holding him close? Wood wouldn’t point that out just yet. If Trent wanted to have some fun with him, then fine. He’d entertain himself until it was time for him to leave. He should’ve known this setup was too good to be true. What Trent pulled on him was exactly the kind of typical mess Wood was used to. People judging and condemning him for no reason.

Trent went completely still when Wood dragged his nose over his forehead and down the side of his face. His voice was shaky, and his breaths were hot and swift along Wood’s throat. “The fuck are you doing?”

“I’m doing what you want me to do.” Wood clenched his teeth. “I’m playing your bullshit game, Trent.”

“I’m not playing anything,”he breathed.

“Oh yeah you are.” Wood released Trent suddenly, but he didn’t pull away. He leaned in until his mouth was against Trent’s ear. “But I’m about to show you I’m much better at this game than you are.” Wood slowly eased away, then cocked his head to the side, motioning to Trent’s punishing grip he still had on his shoulders. “Now let me go.”

Well, well, well. What do I have here? Wood sat across from Trent at the small dining table while Mike went over some important particulars in his one-page lease. Wood knew he should be paying attention, but he liked the way he kept catching Trent trying to steal a glance in his direction. Of all the stories he’d heard of the hot-tempered, quick-to-whup-a-man’s-ass Trent, he didn’t picture him with thick, peach lips or piercing, warm brown eyes that he kept shielded by a slight frown.

He was fascinating.

Wood kinda wished Bishop would’ve told his family a little more about him instead of leaving them guessing…and eventually surprised. That meant they also didn’t know why the government thought he deserved to lose seventeen years of his life. Great. “Wood, your room is already furnished. That’s your own space. The living room and kitchen you’ll both share. However you want to split the groceries is between you two. The second bathroom has some pipe problems, so you guys will have to share the bathroom in the hall until I can get it fixed. You’ll divide the utilities half and half, and the rent is due on the first of the month, it’s late on the tenth. Don’t make me hunt your asses down for my money either.”Mike spun the paper in Wood’s direction and pointed for him to sign under Trent’s name. “Everything seem copacetic?”

“Yep. Looks standard.” Wood had no clue what a typical lease looked like these days, but he signed it anyway. He had a roof over his head that didn’t include an overseer and a room he didn’t have to bolt to keep out thieves. Mike’s terms were fair; he didn’t seem like a conniving bastard. And if he was anything like his son, he was probably a damn decent guy. When Bishop told him that his dad was only fifteen years older than him and more like one of the guys than a father figure…he hadn’t been exaggerating.

Mike stood when they were finished with business and shook Wood’s hand again. “I wish there was another way I could thank you for what you did for my boy in prison. I know how hard he struggled when he and Trent got separated. Thank you. Thank you for being there for him when I couldn’t. You’re a good man.”

Wood was surprised at the sudden seriousness, and he struggled with receiving such high praise. He accepted the handshake with a tight nod, and Mike added, “We’re in our off-season at work, but let me know if you need some extra income around the spring. I’m sure I can get you on one of the crews.”

Trent hummed his agreement. “I’m sure I’ll have room on my crew this summer. If he can hack it.”

Wood’s eyes were locked on Trent. Is he trying to bait me? How cute.

Mike walked past the back of Trent’s chair and popped him in the back of the head. “Night, asshole. Thanks for the beers.”

“You’re welcome. I’ll just deduct it from your rent, you irritating piece of—”

“Trent!” Bishop barked. “Why don’t you show Wood around and tell him where his room is.”

Trent gave Bishop an incredulous glare, and Wood had to hold back the chuckle that threatened to escape. Besides, he had a feeling his new roommate didn’t like to be laughed at. Bishop said it might take a minute to get Trent to loosen up to the idea of them living together, but he was thinking it might take a lot longer than that.

Trent got up and motioned for Wood to follow him while Bishop pretended to be busy watching Edison stir the chicken stew. Trent pointed out the utility room, the hall bathroom, the closet, and linen closet. At the end of the short hallway, Trent leaned against the wall and pointed to a room with the door already open. “That’s you.”He thumbed over his shoulder. “This is me.”

“You always keep your door shut that tight?”Wood asked, noticing how close they had to stand in the confined space.

Trent scoffed. “Is there a reason you want it open?”

Wood couldn’t stop himself from staring. Damn, he liked the way Trent worded that, liked how loaded it was with suggestion whether the man realized it or not. “No. No reason at all.”

REVIEW TOUR - Bishop: A True Lover's Story by A.E. Via

Buy Links: Amazon US | Amazon UK

Length: 121,000 words approx.

Cover Design: Simply Defined Art

Blurb

At only thirty-two, Bishop Stockley has lived a hard-knock life. His gang was his family, the streets his home. Until the crew he’d always called his brothers betrayed him. After doing five years in a federal prison, Bishop is back at his dad’s trailer and working for his landscaping company, thrust into a legit world where he’s no longer the alpha—a world where a criminal record is the least of his disadvantages, because Bishop can’t read or write. Illiteracy had never been an obstacle for him on the streets, he didn’t need to know how to read Moby Dick to survive, he needed to know how to read people… and that was a hustle he’d learned hard and fast. Now, he had to change his life.

Bishop’s only support system was a young, inexperienced dad who’d insisted he call him Mike all their life—since they looked more like brothers than father and son. And his hot-tempered, childhood, best friend from ’juvie, Trent. Bishop already had the deck stacked against him, but he wasn’t afraid of hard work to change his situation, and he did want to change. Especially after he encountered Edison Scala, a kind-spirited office manager who didn’t hesitate to come to his defense… a man that saw past Bishop’s grass-stained coveralls. A man who wasn’t intimidated by his stern features and his silence.

Edison hadn’t grown up the way most of his peers had. He’d been raised by a single father who’d owned an old-fashioned barber shop where Edison was taught how to not only shave with a straight razor, and shine shoes, but also how to treat others, to not judge, to be a gentleman, to be respectful and speak without profanity. But, the biggest lesson he’d learned, was to always be himself. His lack of friends and a social life wasn’t his fault. No matter how much weight he gained, no matter how many times his staff called him a square, Edison did not need to change.

Bishop knew Edison was off-limits. He’d made personal vows to himself when he was released from prison, ones that he never intended to break. But, when Edison asked him about providing landscaping services at his home, there was no way he could refuse. He hadn’t expected Edison to feed him, praise him, encourage him, and look at him the way he did—as if Bishop was somebody. Mike and Trent warned him not to mix business with pleasure and he didn’t intend to.

No multiple pairings. No cliffhangers. Ends with a very, very HFN.

Warning:
This book is a M/M contemporary romance, a hardened man’s struggle to find real love. There are no police chases or doors being kicked in, in this one. But, don’t worry. Bishop is still intense enough to keep you on the edge.

REVIEW
My Rating - 5 Stars!
AE Via's Bishop is gripping from the start. From there, it goes on to be a phenomenal and amazing romance.

Bishop and Edison are two men who are not only complete opposites from each other, but also from how they appear to the world. Each suffers from staggering self doubt, one from illiteracy, the other from weight issues.

After five years in jail, Bishop is now doing landscape work for his father's company. I love Bishop. He's a good man who's just trying his best to right his life. His struggles are many, but he's a fighter and a survivor. I am highly impressed with the strength of his character.

When Bishop and Edison meet, a lot of assumptions are made. These are two men who are complete opposites. The difference in their education and their job success is wonderfully explored. But, even better yet, the author clearly illustrates that education does not equal talent or success. I love this aspect of the story. It's very poignant, as it's important to realize that education isn't everything.

As for Bishop's relationship with his father, Mike, be warned that it is hysterical. This alone makes it a worthwhile read. That said, their relationship is important to Bishop's development, as his father is trying his best to help Bishop better himself. I love his dad. Only fifteen when Bishop was born, Mike wasn't the best father during Bishop's youth, but he's doing all he can to redeem himself now.

I'm beyond impressed with Bishop, and love everything about this AE Via read. It's well developed with deep, complex characters. It's a beautiful read, both compelling and inspiring.
