Canning the Center (Long Pass Chronicles #2) by Tara Lain

Amazon Link   - Available in KU

Is there a closet big enough to hold a football pro and a drag queen?

Jamal -- Posing as straight. Feigning affection for his teammate’s sister. Acting like he doesn’t despise his team’s owner.

Trevor -- Hiding his drag persona. Disguising his IQ. Pretending to be someone he’s not.

Jamal Jones, pro football center, and Trevor Landry, college student and drag queen, both fake their lives to keep from losing what they want. They even go so far as to let Trevor pretend to be a woman to convince Jamal’s team that he has a girlfriend.

If they drop their acts, Jamal can lose the promising football career he’s always wanted and Trevor could lose his scholarship.

But is having their dreams worth living a phony life? Or will they finally admit, what the really want is each other?

CANNING THE CENTER is a hiding the truth, secret enemies, forbidden love, toppy femme, MM romance.

Note: CANNING THE CENTER is a republication of an earlier work. Only the cover has changed.

My Rating - 5 Stars!

Canning the Center is the second book in the Long Pass Chronicles series. I love everything about this Tara Lain sports romance and am thrilled it's being re-released.

I love Jamal and Trevor. These men have a great story, with plenty of forbidden feelings and emotions throughout.

Jamal's an NFL player who's bisexual and stuck playing for a homophobic coach. He's definitely stuck in a situation he doesn't want, unable to come out and having to deal with a coach he doesn't like.

And when he meets Trixie/Trevor, his world gets that much more complicated.

Oh Trixie! Oh Trevor! I love these characters, both in and out of drag. And most of all, I absolutely find myself swooning over the fact that Trixie/Trevor is everything Jamal wants. Seriously, a bisexual man finding himself in love with a drag queen, and getting what he wants from both a female relationship and a male relationship. Omg. Love it!

Obviously, there's a lot going on in this story. It's bad enough that Jamal is closeted, but falling for Trixie/Trevor starts to make things more problematic.

Canning the Center is a fabulous read. I have nothing but love for this Tara Lain gem. This tale is full of complex situations and is an emotional rollercoaster. It's a long road for these two to get to their happy ending, but don't worry, they do get there.

As an unseen enemy draws near, a royal bodyguard must choose between duty and love.

Risking his life to save a princess is all in a day’s work for Sergeant Joe Wenlock, a Close Protection Officer detailed to protect the royal family. After months of recovery following his brush with death, Joe’s ready to return to duties. But Alejandro Fuente-Sastre, as infuriating as he is fabulous, is the last royal Joe wants to be assigned to.

Alejandro isn’t quite the sort of queen that the British royal family is used to, but when Joe learns that Her Majesty’s step-grandson is also drag bombshell Paloma Picante, it makes his job a whole lot tougher. But is there more to Alejo than sulking and sequins?

When Alejandro’s life is threatened by an unseen tormentor who progresses from internet trolling to arson and violence, Joe must keep his charge safe from harm.

Living in close quarters with the man he shouldn’t be falling for, Joe begins to discover his true self. But as Alejandro’s enemy prowls ever nearer, Joe must make the impossible choice between duty and love.

My Rating - 3.5 Stars!

The Reluctant Royal is a decent royal romance by Catherine Curzon and Eleanor Harkstead.

Joe and Alejo are interesting characters. Joe's marriage is far from perfect, with a wife he was "forced" into marrying.  He's closeted, stuck in  a loveless marriage, and completely taken by his new charge.

And poor Alejandro has major family issues, a stalker, and is dating a complete ass. Rich and famous, bullied at school, and under way too much pressure. His abuse is a tough read.

What follows is a forbidden romance between bodyguard Joe and his charge Alejo. But adding to their story is the fact that Alejo and Joe have already met, despite Joe not knowing it. The drag queen scenes are great, and the addition of Joe's attraction to Alejo's drag queen persona adds some great complexity to their story.

It's an easy read, with plenty of layers. Slow burn is the word here! Overall, it's sad, sweet, and full of action. And cheating too, of course.

The writing definitely fits the feel of a royal romance. It's not my preferred style, but it's perfect for this book, as it's written in a more formal style. It's slow going throughout. I enjoyed the mystery and danger though. In actuality, I appreciate it more now, looking back on it, then I did while reading it. Weird, but that's probably due to the slow pace.

The Reluctant Royal is a thrilling tale with a drag queen, royalty, and plenty of suspense. The authors put these men in plenty of danger during their developing romance and had me shocked at the end.

Joe took another sip of tonic water. He wished it contained gin, because being the only sober person at the table was hardly his idea of fun, but as he watched the bottle of champagne being passed around, he knew he didn’t really want any alcohol anyway. He couldn’t go back to work the worse for wear. Not after months of sick leave. Best foot forward, as his dad would say.

And it wasn’t only his decision not to drink that made Joe an oddity at the table. These were all Wendy’s friends, out for her birthday. Solicitors, legal types, who’d spent most of the evening already talking shop. Joe looked on, his mind on other things. Would he cope on his first day back? Would they trust him to ever do a good job again?

“So, Joe, we’re taking bets on who you’re going to be coddling next week!” Wendy put her second bottle of Prosecco on the table and settled into her seat. Her leg brushed Joe’s momentarily and she shifted, putting air between them again. “Izzy thinks one of the Fergie duo. Barnaby’s bet his bonus on Wills and Kate. I think it’s going to be the queen. The top job for a top bobby!”

“I don’t know yet.” Joe shrugged. “Maybe one of the corgis?”

“I bet you do know, and you’re teasing us!” Wendy’s friend Jemima brayed. “Have you signed the Official Secrets Act?”

Joe turned the plastic stirrer through his fizzing drink, rattling the ice cubes against the glass. He didn’t pester Wendy’s friends about confidential matters, so why did they think he was fair game? “As you know, if I had, I wouldn’t be allowed to say.”

“Whoever it is,” Wendy told them, “let’s hope they don’t put my poor old hubby in hospital again! He’s getting too old to play the action hero!”

Wendy’s friends laughed, and Joe tried to look happy, but he really didn’t want to be reminded of the accident. The headlamps coming straight for him in the evening darkness—and after he’d pushed the Duchess of Albany out of the way, there had been no time for Joe to leap aside. Just that crushing pain as the car slammed into him. Joe had slumped over the bonnet and found himself eye to eye with the idiot who’d just tried to deliberately run down the duchess.

“He’s not that old!” Verity giggled. She patted Joe’s leg and he tried not to flinch. “And still in fine form, too, Wendy, you lucky thing!”

“Lucky old me!” Wendy’s smile looked like a grimace. How would she know what form her husband was in when it had been over six months since they’d so much as kissed, let alone more? She refilled her glass and whispered to Joe, “For God’s sake, have a real drink.”

“Come on, you know I can’t,” Joe replied. “I can’t risk it. First day back and all that.”

“It’s my birthday.” Her pink lips grew thin and she drew in a deep, sharp breath, as sharp as her fresh blonde bob. Then she put her lips to his ear and hissed, “Stop showing me up, Joe, have a drink.”

“I’m drinking a stunt gin and tonic. That’s enough.” Joe held up the glass. It had the brand name of a well-known gin printed down its side. “They do tests, you know. I want to be nice and clean when they poke through my bodily fluids, thank you very much.”

“Barnaby!” Wendy subtly turned away from her husband, the centre of attention all over again. He was dismissed, just as he had been so many times over the five years of their miserable married life. “So, we’re all dying to know how your Tokyo merger’s going. It’s all everyone’s talking about. Tell us all the latest from the front line of big money!”

Joe sat his glass down on the table. The last thing he cared about was Barnaby and his bloody merger, which he’d heard snippets of for weeks as Wendy had made business calls at home. Barnaby this, Barnaby that, ‘Barnaby’s going places.’

So am I.

Joe nudged his seat back and stood to leave. Verity glanced at him, as if she was surprised he was going, but her attention turned to Wendy and Barnaby. Joe wasn’t sure where he’d go, but he needed fresh air. He wanted to be away from loud drinkers, away from Wendy’s carping. His head was pounding and as he stepped outside the pub, a car drove by close to the kerb. He instinctively jumped back, pressing himself against the wall behind him.

Calm down, Sergeant Wenlock, he told himself.

The night was cold, as cold as the pub had been hot, and Joe took a deep breath of autumn air. London tonight seemed even more surreal than ever, the streets a curious mix of the same well-dressed professionals who filled Wendy’s group and those who had embraced Halloween, escaping the real world in the form of cats and devils, vampires and aliens, some already stumbling, others only just starting out. And there in the middle of them was Joe, who would rather be anywhere else but there.

Maybe Joe should’ve thrown aside his tweed jacket and sensible open-necked shirt for a costume. He’d have made quite a good Frankenstein’s monster, maybe, though that said, when he’d first been taken to hospital and had plaster casts and bandages in places he hadn’t thought possible, he’d have been a brilliant cursed mummy.

Joe decided to go for a wander. Once he was working again, he’d have little time to call his own. He’d take his freedom when and where he could. Music blared from pubs and bars, people laughed, taxis pulled up and disgorged their passengers. And up ahead, someone was shouting.

Bloody people, can’t hold their drinks.

“Don’t you ever, ever bloody do that again! Do you hear?”

It was a man’s voice up ahead. Joe could see two figures, one in a black suit with a skeleton painted on it in white. He was wagging his finger—jabbing it—at the red-headed woman walking beside him in heels so high Joe wondered how she didn’t fall flat on her face.

“It’s so important to me, so fucking important, and all you have to do is just nod, and instead, you’re pissing about, making a fucking joke of yourself!”

“I’m sorry!” Her voice sounded almost desperate and she recoiled from her companion’s stabbing finger, jerking away as though it were the blade of a knife. She hurried after the skeleton when he stalked onwards, scooping up the silken hem of her shimmering red evening gown to follow. “Don’t be angry, I’m sorry!”

“I’m sorry!” he mimicked. Joe could almost see him in profile. The man’s face was disguised by makeup that turned his face into a skull.

Seemed a bit rich for him to be accusing someone of making a joke of themselves.

“The man’s an investor in my film, and I wanted him to know that I’m serious about my art, and then you’re there hanging over my shoulder, interrupting and gobbing on about God knows what!” The man clenched his hands. Even they were tricked out in skeleton makeup. “Why do you wind me up like this? You do it on purpose, for fuck’s sake, then it’s all I’m sorry! Well, you bloody well will be!”

“He was laughing too,” the woman said, a fresh note of desperation in her sing-song voice. No, not desperation. Fear. “He was having a good time, you’re not thinking straight! Just—please, don’t be like this!”

“My thinking’s perfectly clear!” The man gave a long sniff then, and Joe knew exactly what was going on.

The drugs are talking.

The man stopped where he was and raised his hand at the woman. The way she flinched back told Joe that this wasn’t the first time it had happened. As she drew away, he saw her makeup clearly, a glamourous sugar skull in a rainbow of colours that nearly took his breath away.

“Please don’t,” was all she said.

Joe increased his pace. The man’s raised hand trembled but in a split second he slapped the woman across her painted face.

Joe ran.

He was on the couple in only a few steps, and interposed himself between them. He didn’t look back at the woman, but could hear her frightened breathing just behind him. “That’s enough. Time for you to go.”

“And who the fuck are you, James Bond?” the man sneered.

“I’m not going to stand around and watch a bully like you slap a woman.” Joe clenched his fists, resisting the temptation to give Skeletor a taste of his own medicine.

“A woman? That’s a fucking joke. She’s a drag queen—a bloke!”

Joe turned to look at the woman.

A bloke?

Was she?

Don't You Want Me by Liam Livings

Tony
Looking for love in all the wrong places. Toe-curling, guilt-laden sex with ‘married men seeking discreet fun’. Why doesn’t anyone want a social worker by day, drag queen by night and a Human League fan all day long?

He deletes the hook-up apps, swears off men. Mentoring Nick, they move beyond friendship. Forced to share a hotel room, Nick’s mixed signals point towards one conclusion. (Hint: it’s well beyond professional.)

Nick
Recently single, he’s trying to work out who he is without his ex-boyfriend, who told Nick he’s too this, not enough that, being gay in the wrong way.

His career gives him purpose, direction. Yet he wants more from Tony than an employee should from his boss. After their passionate night, he needs more than friendship—f**k buddies…or forever boyfriends. (Hint: it’s well beyond physical.) Except Tony’s sworn off men…

Don’t You Want Me is a friends-to-lovers, forced-proximity, boss/employee gay romance featuring more emotional baggage than allowed by most airlines, lots of kissing and more, plus a guaranteed happy ever after.

My Rating - 4 Stars!

Don't You Want Me is a nice friends to lovers romance by Liam Livings.

It's fabulous seeing Tony get his love story with Nick. This is a boss/employee type tale with the two hooking up.

Tony and Nick are two friends, with plenty of fear and about getting involved romantically.

Tony's drag queen persona has always made it tough for him to find love. But when he and Tony travel together for a business trip, things start to change.

They are cute and sweet, as they're so good together, but struggle with actually dating. Of course, despite not wanting to date, they start a friends with benefits thing.

Their story is one with awkward moments, and big changes in a friendship. The big moment of angst is well done, making sense to the reader and in a manner fitting of their relationship.

Liam Livings' Don't You Want Me  is a sweet romance between two men who struggle to let down their walls and fully commit to being together.

Olympic-size dreams come at a price.

Openly gay college swimmer Ian Harrington feels like he's fighting against a current of tragedy. He's grieving the loss of his parents and best friend, and now he's dealing with a toxic coach and judgmental brother. But he won't let that stop him from chasing his dream: Olympic gold.

Ricky Chavez has just about everything he wants in life: a great career, a supportive family, and a side gig as drag queen Rosie Riveting. The only thing he's missing is a partner to share it all with.

When the two men connect after Rosie’s performance, they're immediately drawn to one another. But it's never that simple. Ricky isn't the type of man to hide, and with Ian's coach breathing down his neck, he can't openly love a drag queen without making waves.

They'll have to brave deep waters to make it to the finish line.

My Rating - 5 Stars!

Wow! Advance & Retreat is another stellar book by Brigham Vaughn. The fourth book in the Midwest Series, it's the perfect addition to this series of sports romances.

Ian is a wonderfully developed character. He's an openly gay Olympic-quality swimmer, but he knows he can't let people find out he's attracted to drag. As in, he's attracted to drag queens. He comes with some serious baggage. His best friend died and his coach is misogynistic. His backstory is heartbreaking and had me falling for him early on.

And Ricky. I love Ricky. He's Rosie when he's in drag, and he has a one night stand with Ian.
Ricky has confidence issues, as it isn't easy finding men who like both the Ricky and the Rosie sides of him. He's always rejected the morning after. His struggles are real and his story is emotional.

Ian and Ricky are fabulous together. Their developing relationship is one of confusion and anger, as well as guilt, grief, and shame. Each man has a interesting story to tell, and together their story is spectacular.

The author's writing style is wonderful, with some great characters, an easy flow, and a worthy storyline. The continued appearance by former characters is fabulous. I love seeing Lowell and the others again.
Advance & Retreat is a definite must read for any sports romance fans. And for those you don't love sports, but love to read about drag queens, read this book. Brigham Vaughn excels in combining two completely opposite worlds and giving the reader a memorable romance.

Brigham Vaughn is on the adventure of a lifetime as a full-time author. She devours books at an alarming rate and hasn’t let her short arms and long torso stop her from doing yoga. A collector of vintage Nancy Drew books and green glassware, she enjoys poking around in antique shops and refinishing thrift store furniture. An avid photographer, she dreams of traveling the world and she can’t wait to discover everything else life has to offer her.

Her books range from short stories to novellas to novels. They explore gay, bisexual, lesbian, and polyamorous romance in contemporary settings.

Mascara & Bandages (Mary's Boys #3) by Brandon Witt

Amazon Link - Available in KU
Goodreads Link

Ariel Merman is a new drag queen who’s already finding a family at Hamburger Mary’s. After a performance as Ariel, Zachary Cooper walks home in his makeup and is assaulted by homophobes. Zachary’s worry that the attack has thrown a wrench in his good fortune is eased when he looks into the eyes of his doctor.

Dr. Teegan Chau is a little lost after divorcing his wife and coming out of the closet, but he can’t deny the pull he feels toward the young man he patches up. Luckily, Zachary takes the initiative and asks Teegan out. But attraction is the easy part of their blossoming relationship—as they deal with an ex-wife and child, being a drag queen in a heteronormative culture, Zachary’s lingering trauma from his attack, and Teegan acclimating to life as part of an out-and-proud gay couple.

The challenges seem daunting at the start of a romance. Can Zachary and Teegan make it through the rough patches and take a chance on the love that’s been missing from both their lives?

My Rating - 4.5 Stars!

Mascara & Bandages, the third book in the Mary's Boys series, is an amazing story. This Brandon Witt book is best read as part of the series, but could easily be rad as a standalone.

Being a drag queen at St Mary's is what saves Zachary, as being Ariel helps set him free. Zachary is timid, but Ariel is bold and confident. But most important, Ariel is worry free.

Teegan's a doctor who meets the young Zachary after he's gay bashed. Like Zachary, Teegan is also wonderfully complex. He has an ex wife who's actually lovely, and a young daughter. His reasons for being in the closet are well explored.

The attack is a tough read, and the aftermath messes with Zachary emotionally and physically. Both men come with their share of issues, including a whole hell of a lot of doubts and fears. But along the way they find strength and love, as they compliment one another perfectly. There's also some good humor in this story of courage and trust.

Overall, Zachary and Teegan have a tender and sweet relationship. It's a beautiful journey that is full of heat and emotion. There are homophobic parents, with some barbs that left me numb.

Mascara & Bandages, the third book in the Mary's Boys series is well worth a read. Brandon Witt brings all the emotions to the table in this story, starting with the gay bashing incident and ending with a HEA. It's a wonderful combination of pain and suffering along with attraction, chemistry, and love.

Patrick and Andrew find themselves faced with a chemistry they cannot deny

Blurb

Patrick returns from a tour of duty to find his son very different. Peter is dressing in girl's clothes, and his hair is too long, and he's obsessed with drag queens. None of that sits well with Patrick. Patrick then meets the drag queen Ann Moore, and starts to hang out with them.

Andrew is one of River City's best drag queens. As Ann Moore, he dazzles adults and children alike. When one of those children's fathers wants to find out more about what his son is enjoying, Andrew is happy to guide him. It doesn't hurt that Patrick is ridiculously hot. Hot and straight though.

The friendship that forms is unlikely, and even more unlikely, Patrick and Andrew find themselves faced with a chemistry they cannot deny.

Review
My Rating - 5 Stars!

Rob Browatzke's A Fluid State is a beautiful story.

Home from Afghanistan, Patrick's the typical macho, straight man who's struggling with his son Peter's clothing choices. Then he meets Andrew, a drag queen who helps Patrick understand Peter better.

I adore how supportive Patrick's ex wife is about Peter. And I'm enamored by the development of Patrick's acceptance and support. He's the perfect illustration of being uncomfortable with something one doesn't understand. As he gets to know Andrew, he slowly starts to open his eyes to why someone is femme, and that it's okay to be femme.
The author expertly explores that one's clothes doesn't define them, and I love every minute.

This is a story of fear and confusion. It has some super hot first times, as Patrick has never been with a man before. And damn, there's plenty of steam.

I love the author's writing style. He treats the issue of gender fluidity with understanding and care. The dialogue is fantastic and the characters are well developed, with their feelings jumping off the page.

In the end, I find that A Fluid State is one of those books that should be read by everyone. Not necessarily for the romance, although that part is fantastic, but because it's a wonderful story of acceptance and understanding. After all, "We are what we are." Rob Browatzke excels in carrying out a tender lesson while never making it feel preachy. I can't recommend this one enough.

Excerpt

“So,” Andrew said, when they were relocated back to the couch, sitting facing each other, beers in hand.

“So.”

“First off, let me, well, set you straight on something. Kent and I aren’t dating, so don’t feel bad about that.”

“Good,” Patrick said. “I’d hate to have some gay guy come at me for hitting on his boyfriend.”

“Is that what it was? You hitting on me?”

Patrick looked away. “Honestly, I don’t know.”

“Well, what’s going on in that head of yours?”

“You,” he said. “You’re going on in my head. You and only you. Ever since we met. I thought it was all about Peter, but no, it’s about me. You’ve gotten under my skin, Andrew, and I don’t know how to get you out of me.” Their eyes locked. “And honestly, I’m not sure I want you gone.”

“But you’re straight.”

“I’ve always thought that. I’ve never been attracted to a guy before this.”

“Never? Not even in school? Some guys experiment, you know.”

“Never. I’ve looked back and there’s never been anything to make me think I’d ever be into a guy.”

“So you’re into me?”

Patrick’s face turned pink and he looked away. “I don’t know. Yes. Yes, I am.” He swallowed hard and looked back at Andrew. “Look, I know this is out of the blue, and I know what you said at the pool, and-”

“What did I say at the pool?”

“That, you know, that you’re not attracted to me.”

It was Andrew’s turn to blush and look away. “Well, since you’re being honest, I guess I should be too. Patrick, of course I’m attracted to you. You... well, look at you. I just said that to set your mind at ease. I was enjoying hanging out. I am enjoying it. I didn’t want you to freak out thinking I found you attractive or worried that I was going to try to jump you.”

“And it ended up being me that jumped at you.”

Andrew looked at him and grinned. “Seems that way.”

“So.”

“So.”

“Here we are then, both attracted to each other. What do we do now?”

When it comes to gay bars and booze and drugs and drama, he knows what he's talking about. He came out in the mid-90s, and liquor and drama went hand in hand. He has 20+ years of experience working in gay clubs in Edmonton, Alberta, and you’ll always find his love for his other career permeating the stories he tells. Rob is now 9+ years clean and sober, although there's still a bit of drama once in a while, for old times' sake.

There are some incredible authors out there, and it's important to be able to see in print (or on the screen) stories about people just like us.
