Troubled Waters (Pine Cove #2) by H.J. Welch

Blurb

Scout Duffy doesn’t know what’s worse. The fact that his scorching one-night-stand is his bratty new client, or the fact that he doesn’t even remember Scout. But beneath all the bravado, Scout can see Emery is terrified, and he’ll do anything to protect him from his attacker. If only he would lower his walls and let Scout into his heart as easily as he lets him dominate in the bedroom.

Being out and proud his whole life means Emery Klein has never been safe. But now his charity work and social media fame have put a target on his back from bigots, and his friends force him to hire a private bodyguard. Emery doesn’t need to be judged by some straight former-boxer, but his attraction to the gorgeous hunk is insatiable. When Emery finally recognizes Scout, they can’t keep their damn hands off one another, if only for as long as Scout’s in town.

There’s a reason Emery never looks too closely at the men he sleeps with, just like there’s a reason Scout lives out of a suitcase in motel rooms. Will two men hiding from hurt realize the love that could heal them both is right in front of them? Or will Emery’s attacker take everything before they have the chance?

Troubled Waters is a steamy, standalone MM romance novel with a guaranteed HEA and absolutely no cliffhanger.

Review
My Rating - 5 Stars!

HJ Welch's Troubled Waters is an amazing romance within a stalker story.

The fun begins with that awkward moment when Scout's tasked with protecting his one night stand from the previous evening. Adding to the fun is the fact that Emery doesn't recognize him. And yes, this actually makes sense within the context of the story.

Emery's an entertaining femme character, who just so happens to be a social media star. He's enchanting, and in the end he's a fabulous character, who I came to immensely love and respect.

Their story is one of assumptions and misconceptions. Their story is one in which the heart gets involved and the lines start to cross. It's an emotional tale full of want and need, action, and hair-raising suspense. It has homophobia and a hate crime.

In the beginning, this romance between Scout and Emery was okay, but didn't draw me in completely. But, damn, I am elated that I kept reading. The author developed a thrilling danger/action scene, which I found to be absolutely riveting, leaving me on the edge of my seat.

And, omg, I absolutely love Kamran. He's an amazing side character who adds a whole lot of charm and humor to the story.

It wonderfully explores the complication of being emotionally attached to the person you're protecting. All of it is so damn well written.

And, wow, the epilogue is magnificent!

Troubled Waters brought out all the feels. HJ Welch completely captures my heart with this story of a man who discovers that being alone isn't the best way to live. This book is perfect for anyone looking for a femme character, or an exciting mystery.
