Never a Hero (Tucker Springs #5) by Marie Sexton

Blurb

Everyone deserves a hero.

Owen Meade is desperately in need of a hero. Raised by a mother who made him ashamed of his stutter, his sexual orientation, and his congenitally amputated arm, Owen lives like a hermit in his Tucker Springs apartment. But then hunky veterinarian Nick Reynolds moves in downstairs.

Nick is sexy and confident, and makes Owen comfortable with himself in a way nobody ever has. He also introduces Owen to his firecracker of a little sister, who was born with a similar congenital amputation but never let it stand in her way. When she signs the two of them up for piano lessons—and insists that they play together in a recital—Owen can’t find a way to say no. Especially since it gives him a good excuse to spend more time with Nick.

Owen knows he’s falling hard for his neighbor, but every time he gets close, Nick inexplicably pulls away. Battling his mother’s scorn and Nick’s secrets, Owen soon realizes that instead of waiting for a hero, it’s time to be one—for himself and for Nick.

Review
My Rating - 5 Stars!

Marie Sexton's Never a Hero, part of the Tucker Springs series, is a wonderful book. There's so much beauty in this multi-layered story and I loved every second of it.

Owen is one of those special characters who you will instantly fall in love with, but for his strength and his vulnerability. When we meet him, he's near his breaking-point. With just one hand, Owen's everyday actions are limited or affected and the author perfectly illustrates this. As for his relationship with his mother, to say it's difficult is an understatement. Every moment of their interactions had me wanting to cry, scream, and run away with Owen. The author expertly illustrates the difference between support and criticism with these two.

And then there's Nick. His dynamics with his sister are wonderful and extremely enjoyable. But it's his understanding or Owen and his struggles that won my heart. Both patient and compassionate, he's the perfect man to help Owen start to live again.

When we meet Nick, he's exactly what Owen needs, but his story is also not without it's struggles. While Owen has a lot to overcome physically, and with his mother, Nick had plenty of emotional issues. Thus, both men need one another; to help them heal, grow, and love. The transformation in both men from start to finish is entertaining as well as powerful. As I mentioned earlier, there's a whole lot of beauty in their growth.

And let's not forget the piano playing. This aspect of the story is expertly written with knowledge, compassion, and heart. It's absolutely inspirational and just downright riveting. It's certainly came as a surprise, and is heart-warming.

The writing is superb, excellently written in Owen's first person pov. His voice was the perfect way to tell this story and I was easily able to see the action and feel his emotions.

Never a Hero is an accomplished small town romance. I immediately feel in love with this touching Marie Sexton tale and enjoyed it all. Sweet and full of gentle humor, this story just warmed my heart. I highly recommend this when you're looking for flawed characters who help one another heal.
