Conspiracy Theory (Hamarsson & Dempsey #1) by Elle Keaton

Title: Conspiracy Theory
Author: Elle Keaton
Series: Hamarsson & Dempsey, Book 1
Genre: MM Romance/Mystery/Suspense

Synopsis:

Mat Dempsey returned to Piedras Island after his father’s death. These days he’s Island County’s sheriff. He’s happy enough, even if moving home from San Francisco effectively forced him back into the closet. Mat’s well-ordered universe collapses when a local’s body is discovered floating in the cold waters of Hidden Harbor’s marina. All hell breaks loose in the community, and accusations fly…all coinciding with Niall Hamarsson’s return.

Niall and Mat have a history, and it’s not one Mat’s proud of. He owes Niall an apology, even if it means getting down on his knees. However, Mat’s first priority is investigating the murder before his community tears itself apart, and he may have to ask the aloof Niall Hamarsson for help.

Push apart, pull together, yes or no... The chemistry crackles between them, but will the two men be able to put aside their pasts and embrace a future?

Excerpt I:

Mat turned out of Hamarsson’s driveway and pulled to the side of the road. He needed oxygen. He hadn’t known what to expect when he decided to confirm the rumor flying around Piedras that the “Hamarsson boy” was back. Even the younger people were calling Niall the Hamarsson boy, and they’d never met him.
Hamarsson was not a boy. Not by any stretch of the imagination. The sight of him on the roof shirtless had rendered Mat speechless for a moment, and then he’d said the stupidest thing—because Niall was right, they’d never been friends.

With Niall’s shirt off, Mat had seen the dark ink of several tattoos across his chest and along one arm, with the hint of one continuing onto his back. Until today Mat hadn’t considered himself a tattoo man, but Niall’s ink sparked something in him. Something he was going to need to extinguish, because Niall clearly hated him.

Except II:

“Hamarsson! Niall! Are you all right?” Mat called out while he picked his way from the cabin to the beach. Niall didn’t move or answer. When he reached him, Mat grabbed his shoulder—ready to shake him, to demand a reply, anything so Mat would know he was okay. Residual anger from earlier threatened to resurface; more likely fear, Mat acknowledged. Before Mat opened his mouth to repeat himself, he shined the flashlight directly toward Niall’s face.

Hamarsson’s face was perfectly blank. He didn’t acknowledge Mat’s presence in any way; he stared unseeing out over the black water. Mat looked out in the same direction. All he could see was dark waves, the hint of a moon. Any stars were hidden by cloud cover.

Carefully, Mat moved around to face Niall, kneeling in the damp sand in front of the log. Mat’s knees complained, but he ignored the twinges.

“Niall, look at me.” Mat took off one glove and gently stroked Niall’s cheek with the backs of his fingers. “Niall. Look at me,” he repeated.

Ever so slowly, Niall’s eyes moved so he was looking at Mat instead of the wide expanse of water. What his face hid, his eyes expressed: pale pools of fathomless pain. Mat wanted to make the pain go away; he wanted back the fire and anger he’d seen in their last encounter. Anything but this… blackness.
