Go Forward Slowly by Whitney Cannon

Blurb

Patton is quiet and unassuming, marching steadily to the beat of his own drummer. He knows he’s a little overweight and a bit of a geek and tries not to let those things get him down. He just needs to get through high school to get on with the rest of his life. His love for singing, his family, and his boats are the things that fill him with happiness, and he has his future pretty well planned out. One thing he didn’t plan on, however, was the tall boy wearing eyeliner and nail polish.

Wesley is social with a penchant for wearing a little makeup. He doesn’t let other people’s opinions bring him down and does what makes him feel comfortable. As a gay athlete, he’s gotten used to his fair share of guys thinking they can push him around because of his sexuality, but that hasn’t stopped him from being who he is. He never expected to have a relationship in high school. He never expected anyone to think being too tall and too skinny was sexy. He also never expected to run across anyone like Patton Dean.

The start of junior year brings its own set of challenges and new interactions. When Patton and Wesley get paired together for a semester-long PE assignment, they find themselves forming an easy and unexpected friendship. Can two boys who seem so different, somehow manage to find everything they need in each other? When outside forces put a strain on their relationship, can they hold onto each other and make what they’ve found last?

Review
My Rating - 3.5 Stars!

Whitney Cannon's Go Forward Slowly is a good young adult romance.

It's a story of closeted high school teens, and their journey towards coming out. Wes and Paton are two young men who are each other's first lovers. Their first times are sweet. And their journey towards learning to trust is a worthwhile one. They also have to face an important homophobic issue.

I don't necessarily love the writing, but I like the story. It's emotional, and covers some important themes.
