I am an avid fan of Jay's books.
This book has become my new favorite of all his works.
Jay Northcote, as a transgender man himself, is able to create an honest and real story of Nate, a transgender man. Jay beautifully depicts how important self-acceptance and acceptance of others really is.
Nate returns to his hometown with his teenage daughter, to live with his parents for a while. This is not easy for him to return to a place where everyone remembers him as Nat.
When Nate stumbles across his former best friend, Jack, he doesn't reveal who he is. Nate had always had a crush on Jack, and let their friendship go when it became too hard to listen to Jack talk about his love life.
Jack is back home and also living with his parents while trying to get his life back on track. Reuniting with Nate ends up being a bright spot for him. Jack is impressed by and accepting of Nate's transformation.
Nate still has those same strong feelings for Jack that he always had. And Jack is definitely feeling something for Nate too. When they do decide to become lovers, Jack doesn't want to tell his parents, who are not accepting of the new Nate.
The connection between these two men was simply beautiful. The love and acceptance of each other is divine. And the way that they both benefited from their relationship was everything! They are definitely an example of two people meant to be together and being two halves of a whole.
It is an absolutely beautiful story of two friends having a second chance at their friendship and at love. It will tug at your heartstrings. I felt instantly connected to Nate and Jack. And I love how perfectly Nate shows us the mindset of a transgender man, as well as the repercussions, both mentally and physically of a FTM transition.
