Holt's Hope is a wonderful addition to the Protect & Serve series. The fifth book in this Pandora Pine series, it's best read as part of the series. 

Holt and Quentin are two men who feel an instant connection. Holt is getting cancer treatments, and finds himself under Quentin's care.

Both men know pain and suffering. Quentin's experiences make it easy for him to feel comfortable with Holt. Of course, Holt is used to people not knowing how to talk to him as he's sick.

These men are fabulous. Quentin's past includes a mentally ill mother who couldn't care for him. He spent years in the military, leaving without a leg. This is a man who knows suffering, and yet also knows how to survive.

Then there's Holt who's sick and isn't used to a caring, supportive, and accepting family like Quentin's.

They are wonderful together, easily falling in love, with both being exactly what the other needs.

And as always, Mandy and David are family goals. They are absolutely amazing parents. And we get more Lola, who I just adore. I would read this just for her. This entire large family is amazing. As usual, the author excels in developing a strong and loving family who the reader easily wishes to be a part of. 

The beauty of this author is her ability to write a tale with some extremely serious issues without ever making the story heavy. I appreciate this whole heartedly. It's a gift to keep everything light despite the trauma involved. And as a reader, I can't get enough of the way Pandora writes. 

I'll admit I was a little distracted by some of the Albany info, as I wish it had been the real names instead of made up names. But that is on me, and most people wouldn't ever even notice. But, I did cringe every time the airport's name is mentioned.

Holt's Hope is sweet, tender, and cute. And the ending, oh the ending! It's wonderfully sweet and perfect. Overall, this is another feel-good, charming Pandora Pine read.

So Close, Yet so Far Away

Engaged couple Zakarias and Julian are convinced nothing can separate them…until a global pandemic hits. Zakarias catches the virus with mild symptoms and isolates in the couple’s guest house. The few meters dividing them might as well be the moon as he watches Julian, an ICU nurse, work himself to the bone, unable to support him the way he needs. Frustration and worry build as the weeks pass. Will Zakarias be declared healthy before Julian burns out? 

My Rating - 4.5 Stars!

It's no surprise that Nell Iris' So Far Away is fabulous. Nell is definitely the queen of short romances. 

Zak and Julian are dealing with being separated during a pandemic due to quarantine. This is definitely something so many of us can appreciate right now. 

This read has all the feels. The story focuses on the men and all their reactions and feelings while dealing with their separation.

It's sweet. It's tender. And it's so darn relatable, as one's in quarantine and sick, the other dealing with treating those with the virus.

I enjoy the men together and the way they interact and deal with everything. The way they reevaluate their lives during this time is heartwarming. 

This is not about Covid-19 per say. The author announces it as a random pandemic. Not sure if that makes a difference to anyone, as it will be a long time before we stop thinking about Covid-19 while reading this book. If ever. 

So Far Away is a great choice when you're in the mood for a short story. Nell Iris does a stellar job depicting a beautiful and thoughtful relationship.

When we’d just bought it, we spent many long evenings making plans and discussing options. We’d share a bottle of wine and make long lists of things we wanted, things we deemed necessary in what was going to be our forever home. The lists started outrageously—a wine cellar bigger than the actual house with an employee who turns the bottles? Really, Zakarias?—but distilled into a few reasonable items. So Julian’s dream of the biggest bathroom in the northern hemisphere—a Bath Palace, Zakarias, not a bathroom—complete with a pool, a jacuzzi, a sauna, and every other imaginable luxury, turned into a more feasible sized room with a fancy walk-in shower and a separate bathtub with jets—both of them big enough to accommodate the two of us. It also has a heated floor and double sinks. And my favorite feature; the tiny lights over the bathtub, sprinkled in the ceiling like a starry sky. 

We both love the house; it’s our sanctuary. Every design element is chosen for comfort and to make it feel like a real home. Like someplace we can be ourselves. Someplace we can grow old together.

There are things left to do on the house before we’re happy with it, and we still spend evenings on the couch, sipping wine and making lists. Evenings that more often than not turn into heavy make-out sessions on the couch, with clothes being torn off and strewn about. Evenings that end with us panting in a sticky mess and blissed-out grins on our faces, but without deciding what to do with whatever room we’re considering remodeling at the time. “The discussion is half the fun,” he’ll say with sparkling eyes, and my mouth agrees, while I’m thinking the discussion is all the fun, because I could live in a tiny shack in the forest and be happy as long as he lived there with me.

But this house…it’s not just a house, it’s a home. Our home and I miss it.

I miss coming home from work and finding Julian sprawled on the couch in only his underwear, watching some horrid reality show or other on the big screen TV. I miss waking up early on weekends and preparing luxury breakfasts for him, miss how the scent of freshly baked bread never fails to wake him and lure him out of bed. I miss the adorable sight of him stumbling into the kitchen, bleary-eyed, hair in disarray with pillow creases on his cheek and dried drool on his chin. I miss how he beelines for me like a heat-seeking missile and winds himself around me, burying his face in my neck, snaking his arms around me, and tapping three times over my heart. 

His family came up with that code when he was little; his younger sister was born with a genetic developmental disorder and never learned to speak, so three taps to the heart meant “I love you.” She died when she was only five, but the family keeps her memory alive with that gesture. It was how Julian told me he loved me for the first time. I didn’t understand it at the time, but when he told me the story, I realized he’d been telling me he loved me long before the words were spoken out loud. 

I straighten my spine. Shake my head at my moment of weakness before marching back to the guesthouse and pulling a sweater over my head. I pour out the cold forgotten contents of my mug and pour fresh, steaming coffee into it. 

Then I sit, take a sip, and breathe.

Damn, I love this book! Keeping Casey is an amazing sports romance by Amy Aislin. The first book in  the Keeping Him series, it's a wonderful college hockey romance. 

Casey and Ethan are best friends. They're the kind of best friends one dream of having. A bromance for the ages. Except that they're also secretly in love with each other. 

This is a book that has all my favorites in one. Sports. Hockey specifically. College. Best Friends. I can't get enough of books like this. 

The men are best friends who have been acting like a couple long before they were. They're always together as best friends, but never made the move to be together in a relationship. Until Casey helps out his bestie by pretending to be his boyfriend. 

I love these men, and the depth of their backgrounds. 

Casey's past has left him in fear of losing those he loves. He's terrified to allow love into his life. It's definitely heartbreaking and has me wanting to hug and love him. 

Ethan's sexuality is well explored. He's asexual and has always been in love with Casey. But, damn, once the physical want and need hits, watch out! Love it!

The characters are charming, the storyline sweet, and the ending wonderful. As well, there's some good humor sprinkled throughout.

Everything about this story is sweet and tender. Well, almost everything. I mean, there is a homophobic teammate to deal with. And there's so fear and anxiety. But, it's all wonderfully done. 

One overriding theme is that of grief. The author excels in exploring that there is no one way to grieve. Everyone grieves differently and at their own pace. 

And then there's the RA. I appreciate the way the author deals with this aspect. It's written with knowledge and care. As someone who has arthritis myself, I fully relate to the way this is all explored. It's a big part of who Ethan is, and I'm glad it's written as such. 

I truly adore Keeping Casey. This is another fabulous hockey romance by Amy Aislin. With appearances by some of her characters from her Stick Side series, the fun just increases. I can't wait for more of this series.

Ethan must’ve made a sound. Casey’s head swung in his direction, gaze examining him head to toe in what had become standard for Casey ever since his dad died—checking Ethan over for injuries after practice.

Apparently satisfied, he smiled wide, making Ethan’s stomach tumble, and said, “Hey. I have things for you.”

“So you said.” Dropping his gear bag and backpack next to the door, Ethan moved Casey’s backpack off his desk chair and sat, discreetly rubbing a wrist while Casey wasn’t looking. Wrapping them for practices and games helped, but they were always sensitive afterward, no matter what. He rubbed the other wrist while Casey’s back was turned.

A rustle drew his attention to Casey. There was a pile of . . . stuff on Casey’s bed. Brochures, flyers, buttons, business cards, even a GH pennant. Two piles, actually. He picked up the second, smaller one and handed it to Ethan. “Thought you might be interested in these.”

Ethan dropped them on the desk and sorted through them. “I don’t really have time for clu— Oh, hey! Cross-Stitch Fun-Stitch?”

“Closest I could find to needle felting.”

“Speaking of.” Digging into the outer pocket of his bag, Ethan came out with a squat, felt owl only a couple of inches tall and as round as a bowling ball. He tossed the white-and-gray bundle to Casey. “Forgot to give this to you earlier.”

“Another hootie for my collection?” Casey placed it on the windowsill where a dozen other little felt owls sat in a row. Ethan had been making them for Casey since he’d started needle felting in high school, and he knew there were probably three dozen more in Casey’s bedroom back home. “I’ve got something else for you too.” From the other pile on the bed, Casey fished out a button and leaned over Ethan to affix it to his T-shirt, over his heart.

Ethan stilled, worried he’d pull Casey onto his lap to nuzzle his neck if he so much as twitched a finger. At the end of the day like this, Casey didn’t smell like anything excerpt something uniquely him and, very faintly, of shampoo. This close, the olive green in Casey’s hazel eyes was more pronounced and Ethan had to resist the pull to poke at the tiny beauty mark on his chin.

“There.” Casey stood back with a grin.

Ethan read the button upside down. I dig you. “Let me guess,” he said with a chuckle. “You joined the Archeology Club.”

“And the Hiking Club. Signed you up for it too.”

“Case—”

“I know you don’t have a lot of free time, but I figured there might be a few outings you could attend. Like, the first event is on a Sunday afternoon a couple of weeks from now. You can come then, right?”

Sundays were free of hockey practice and games, so unless Ethan was traveling back from an away game with his team, he had Sundays off. “Yeah, probably.”

“Cool. I’ll RSVP us.”

Ethan played with his button, the metal making a click-click sound as Casey moved the rest of his stuff off the bed and onto the coffee table. I dig you. It was simply one friend giving it to another. Ethan shouldn’t read anything further into it, even if he desperately wished Casey meant something else.

There were other buttons that Casey had gotten for him too and Ethan parsed through them on the desk.

Keep your ion the prize. He chuckled. Casey must’ve stopped by the chemistry club to pick these up for him.

There was also Make like a proton and stay positive, Chemists in a lab are in their element, I like to hear chemistry puns, periodically, and Forget hydrogen, you’re my number one element.

The last one he pinned to Casey’s backpack.

Charisma Check (Table Topped #2) by Alex Silver

Gui’s the best friend I ever had. I love him like a brother, too bad I’m falling for his little brother.

Jude is a walking talking temptation, everything I never let myself want. He’s sweet as chocolate, wickedly funny, and he gets me. The sex, well, it’s worth a repeat and that’s something I never do.

When he visited Gui, I thought I could settle for a one night stand, but then Jude moves to my city to work at my studio. Gui gets him to join my gaming group and suddenly he’s all I see. Now Jude’s looking at me with hearts in his eyes and I’m terrified that I’m going to break his heart.

Charisma Check is the second M/M romance in the Table Topped series. It features Jude, a hopeless romantic with diabetes who makes animation and Theo, a commitment-phobic trans man with depression who runs tabletop games for his friends.

Charisma Check is the second book in the Table Topped series by Alex Silver. It's easily read as a standalone. I was immediately drawn into this story.

This is a best friend's brother's romance, as Theo is attracted to his best friend's younger brother Jude. 

I appreciate the layers of these characters. Theo's a trans man and I love the way his packer issues and sexual experiences are handled. It's nothing heavy, but well representative of his needs and gender dysphoria. All of this is written in a fabulous manner, with knowledge and care. I appreciate it all.

A large part of their tale is the conflict of Theo's intentions. He's always been one who can't commit, but he finds himself not wanting anyone else either. His backstory is well explored, with his fear and pain well explored. I love it. 

As for Jude, he's a diabetic who issues with his health are well illustrated. I appreciate the way the author not only has the character talk about it, but also shows the steps he needs to take when dealing with his health. It's extremely well written. 

I expected this book to be super short like Roll For Initiative, but this one is much longer, at 178 pages. Thus it's much more detailed and the author has a chance to add a lot of depth to the story, which is great.

As with the first book, there's plenty of gaming conversations, which again bored the hell out of me, but it's easy enough to skim over those parts.

This is a story of two men who fight their feelings along the way. Two men who are terrified of being vulnerable and letting themselves fall in love. Two men who can't stop themselves from opening their hearts and letting the other in. 

In the end, I love Charisma Check. Alex Silver delivers with an emotional and deep read. This tale of two men who have had relationship issues in the past, finding love and strength with one another, is beautiful. 

How to Save a Human (VRC: Vampire Related Crimes, #4) by Alice Winters

How to Save a Human contains a cat who shows her affection by not drawing (much) blood, art projects that are a little… sketchy, the most underwhelming “bull” ride ever, and vampires that may or may not be in the mob.

How to Save a Human is another awesome read by Alice Winters. The fourth book in the VRC: Vampire Related Crimes series, it is recommended to read the series in order. 

It's hard to explain the pure genius of an Alice Winters book. It's a given that the main couple will be full of banter, barbs, and snark. You will laugh often, yet you will also fall in love with the men. Each couple is absolutely lovable and there's always some danger and action in the background. I say background since it's never an angst ridden affair. The writing is always fabulous, with a fluid pace, unique characters, and an intriguing storyline. And this one is just that!

In this edition of the series, the VRC is investing some murders and trying to solve their investigation. Unfortunately for Bentley, the man he met in the coffee shop is also the one his team is hunting. 

As far as the relationship is concerned, they meet in a cute way in a coffee shop which just so happens to involves some unicorn porn conversations. It's all classic Alice Winters hilarity which pulled me in immediately.  

As things progress, everything is sweet under all the banter. Honestly, I continue to be in awe of the way Alice manages to create a bond between her couples while always having non stop snark. Even during sex scenes. It's an impressive skill not all authors could achieve.

This story is one with conflict, as the two being involved is definitely a conflict of interest. It's also one with a serious undertone of Bentley losing all those he cares about. His relationship with his niece is touching, and the developing relationship with River isn't going to be an easy ride. River's illness is absolutely heartbreaking, but beautifully helps the story along. 

One of my favorite parts of the story is River's niece's reminder to enjoy the relationship you have with people for as long as you can have them. The good memories will far outweigh the pain of the loss in the end. I love this.

How to Save a Human is a fantastic read. This Alice Winters story is pure delight. I enjoyed every moment with these men and look forward to re-reading this one often. 

Blowing Smoke: A Small-town Firefighter Gay Romance (The Wilds Book 2) by Ashton Cade

Blowing Smoke is a riveting friends to lovers romance. The second book in The Wilds series, this Ashton Cade book is easily read as a standalone. 

I love friends to lovers romance, and this one is spectacular, as Jared and Hunter take tentative steps towards facing their new found feelings. 

The two have been friends with benefits for years. I enjoy the storyline that brings them closer. I definitely got annoyed with Jared's stubbornness and wanted to give him a quick kick in the ass though. 

Their tale includes a health issue, job issues, and family obligations. The men have a strong connection and I have no doubt they belong together. 

I definitely enjoy their budding relationship, but then, damn, when the action/danger hits, I was pulled into the scene with Jared. I felt every single thought. I felt every second of the cold. And the heat. I saw every thing he saw. Basically, the writing is all consuming at that point, completely impressing me.

Blowing Smoke is a nice romance that sucked me in from the start. I enjoyed this Ashton Cade read and am glad to have discovered it.
