My Rating - 5 Stars!

Dead Sea is a stunning read by Mia Kerick. The second book in the Story Ballads series, it's easily read as a standalone.

This is a deep and heavy young adult story.

Kyle and Lenny are two teens. Total opposites. And both barely holding on; both struggling with who they are.

Their lives collide and dramatically change forever one day at the beach when Kyle saves Lenny from a riptide.

The two have nothing in common. Kyle's the popular boy at school, one of the crowd who bullies Lenny. And Lenny's the recluse who never talks at school. Ever. They are two boys who hide, one behind his clothes, the other behind his attitude.

But damn, there are so many layers behind what they show the world. Kyle's mother is toxic and abusive, never appreciating or praising him. Dear lord, the way she talks to him is horrific.

And poor Lenny. He hides behind his silence at school. He knows he's different and he's completely confused by who he really is. Lenny just doesn't fit in. He struggles to figure out where his desires fit in. His love of wearing costumes and dressing up leaves him confused and embarrassed. So to the world he chooses to try to be invisible. His family issues are complicated as well.

They are two broken young men whose worlds collide. Two broken young men who end up saving each other. And it's beautiful.

Despite not knowing one another, Kyle chooses to save Lenny and feels compelled to keep protecting him.

What follows is a tale of two boys who help each other embrace who they are, encouraging and inspiring each other. Two boys who give each other a reason to live.

This is a story with family and mother issues galore. There's homophobia, bullying, attempted suicide, and depression.

As far as favorite quotes, there are way too many to list. The author seriously had me stunned with some of the impressive quotes. Basically, she reminds us to find the people who nurture and support us. She reminds us that life will always throw us obstacles and complications but encourages us to survive our current obstacle and face the future. It's wonderfully poignant. Especially in our current environment.

Dead Sea is a heavy and powerful coming of age story. Mia Kerick once again gifts her readers with a stellar young adult romance that is complex and multi-layered. I am thrilled to have read about these two young men and their journey.

Kyle

My ass is getting numb from zoning out for so long on the couch in front of the boob tube. I crack a smile. It’s what you used to call the TV, Grampa. Remember? Not that it’s got boobs—I’d have surely noticed that, seeing as most nights I stare at the damn thing until my eyes go blurry.

I pop open the bag of Ruffles I found on top of the fridge—you can’t hide junk food from this dude—and stick my bare feet on the coffee table. Mom would kick them off, her big feet wedged into a pair of clunky boots with lugged soles that always leave a mark. She’s not here, though, so I might as well make myself comfortable.

I didn’t want to sneak into the dumb gay bar with those assholes, anyhow. But would it have killed them to ask me if I was up for it? Nope—that didn’t happen. The three fuckin’ musketeers, my ass. Sisti and Zane snuck off with two hot sophomore girls without a word. So, this guy’s parked in front of the boob tube. Like, again.

Makes sense no girl will come near me, though. They smell my meanness from a mile away. Can’t say as I blame them—my own mother smells my meanness and steers clear. But shit, I can’t get a date to save myself.

I stuff a handful of chips into my pie hole and savor the salt and grease. They taste almost too good—I haven’t had a bite to eat since noon when I swiped the school lunch of some dweeb who dared to wear jeans that made him look like he was waiting for a flood. The loser should’ve come to school in pants that hit his damn ankles—he might’ve escaped my attention.

And another fist full of chips…down the hatch.

My best pals bailed on me tonight—I would’ve been a total fifth wheel. You used to tell me with friends like Sisti and Zane I didn’t need no enemies. Whatevs.

I only give about half a shit I couldn’t find a girl to go out with tonight. None of the babes Gil and Damon drool over do it for me. Sure, they’re hot—sweet smelling with painted-on jeans and I’m-all-that smiles. There’s just something I want to see in their eyes that’s not there. Could be because most girls are always glaring at me in that stay-the-hell-away-from-me-you-caveman way. Or it could be the other thing…

Yup, the thing I’ve never admitted to nobody. Never even told you, Gramps, about how I sometimes get hot for the look in certain dudes’ eyes. Grampa didn’t need to know that shit—it’s TMI, for sure. And it’s not like I stand a chance with the smart quiet types of guys I’m into.

I lean back on the ancient couch in our living room for my third episode of Cops. Lucky me, tonight’s a Cops marathon. Hope like hell I’m never one of the bad boys on it.

MiaKerick

Award-winning gay romance author, Mia Kerick, knows that a satisfying romance novel is riddled with challenges. For true love to prevail, the leading men are gonna have to put in some effort. But the HEA is oh-so rewarding.

Mia has a great affinity for the damaged teenage soul in literature. Her YA gay contemporary romance focuses on such tropes as hurt/comfort and dark secrets that keep them apart. In Kerick’s books, the course of true love never does run smooth.

Mia’s books have been featured in Kirkus Reviews magazine. They have won a 2019 IPPY GOLD award for Juvenile/Young Adult Fiction, a 2018 YA GOLD MOONBEAM Children’s Book Award, a YA Readers’ Favorite Award, several Gold Rainbow Awards in YA and adult categories, a Reader Views’ Book by Book Publicity Literary Award, the Jack Eadon Award for Best Book in Contemporary Drama, a YA Indie Fab Award, a First Place Royal Dragonfly Award for Cultural Diversity, a First Place Story Monsters Purple Dragonfly Award, and more.

Mia cheers for each and every victory made in the name of human rights. Her only major regret: never having taken typing or computer class in school, destining her to a life consumed with two-fingered pecking and constant prayer to the Gods of Technology.

A Kind of Forever (Finding Forever #1) by Marie Sinclair

Amazon Link   - Available in KU

Ry and Cart were inseparable in college: two innocent kids in love who thought they could take on the world. But when a photograph of the two of them at an LGBTQ protest outed Ry to his conservative family, his parents forced him to leave college and convinced Cart their relationship was something Ry regretted.

Twelve years later, they’re given a second chance.

Since they last saw each other, Cart has moved on. Sort of. He relocated to San Francisco, became a human-rights lawyer, and fell in love again and got married, only to lose his husband to cancer. Still reeling from the loss, he’s devoted himself to the struggling LGBTQ youth center his late husband founded. Then Ry joins the law firm where Cart works. The moment they see each other, Cart can tell Ry’s changed. Gone is the sensuous and enthusiastic lover Cart remembers, and in his place is a man who looks at Cart with disgust. The last thing Cart needs is having to figure out what’s going on with his former lover, but he can’t ignore the strong emotions resurfacing between them.

When Ry returned to his hometown of San Francisco, he knew being near his parents again was going to be a challenge. For twelve years, they’ve been manipulating him with threats of being disinherited and losing his trust fund. It worked when he was younger, getting him to leave college and agree to conversion therapy in the hopes of getting away and returning to Cart. But the camp caused him so much trauma, he can’t even look at another man without experiencing a panic attack. Now his goal is to beat his parents at their own game by pretending to be the dutiful, straight son they want. Two more years, and he’ll succeed. Then he sees Cart again and realizes what really matters to him. He just needs to find a way for Cart to realize it too.

Trigger Warnings: This book contains references to attempted suicide, conversion therapy, depression, and self-harm, as well as depictions of PTSD and panic attacks.

My Rating - 5 Stars!

A Kind of Forever is an emotional and powerful second chance romance by Marie Sinclair.

Way back when, Ry and Cart were dating and in love. Until Ry disappeared without an explanation.

Set in San Francisco, this one is one hell of a read. Ry's past is full of pain and anguish, all caused by his controlling, homophobic parents.

As for Cart, he's now grieving the loss of his husband Sam and helping to save Sam's LGBTQ youth center.

Upon their reunion, the anger and animosity are both intense. What follows is a beautiful tale of regret and forgiveness. It's a tale with family issues, as Ry can't come out to his family. Their story includes panic attacks and so damn many flashbacks to conversion therapy.

In the end, it's an impressive story with explanations, apologies, and acceptance. It's story of trying to deal with one's own past, as well as another's. And I couldn't put it down.

This is a story with plenty of heavy topics and heavy moments. Take note of the trigger warnings and avoid if conversion therapy or attempted suicide is a hard no for you.

The writing flows well, with a great pace. The characters are well developed and their storyline emotional and intriguing. The great thing is, despite all the heaviness involved, the author manages to keep things lighter than one would except.

A Kind of Forever is a stellar read. My first time reading a Marie Sinclair book, I am in love with this one and look forward to reading more from this newish author.

Review
My Rating - 4 Stars!

Bernard's Diary is a fascinating read by SL Danielson.

Bernard. Wow. Bernard's a complex and empathetic character. Middle aged and obese, he's in the hospital after his fourth suicide attempt. This is where he meets Jack, a doctor overseeing his care.

This book is heavy on the depression aspect. If this is a trigger for you, avoid! Bernard's depression is so damn heart-breaking. His struggle with self-confidence is agonizing. That said, I absolutely love when he's told that before he can love someone else, he needs to learn to love himself.

One interesting thing about these men is that neither are as they appear. No one can truly understand Bernard's depth of depression, and no one can begin to grasp the depth of Jack's demons. In other words, neither man is transparent, making for some interesting reveals.

Already an avid fan of SL Danielson, this book did not disappoint. I love the writing style, as it flows nicely and the characters are always well developed and wonderful. Overall, Bernard's Diary is a great read.

Excerpt

Prologue

Bernard sat on his bed after another long day at the hotel just a few miles away. He was a bellhop.

Not the most glamorous profession, but the only one he could get years ago when his life plans changed drastically. He raked his fingers through his thick salt-n-pepper hair and yawned wide. He reached down and opened up his nightstand drawer and pulled out his journal. He flipped to an open page and plucked off the pen that was attached to the outside and clicked the point down.

I can’t hold this in much longer. Jeremy makes me want to explode every time I get near that incredible body of his! He’s such a good customer, tips well, and never has much luggage. I love bringing up room service to him...I wish it were me that was staying behind in the room with him. I have to tell him how I feel; he must suspect something by now. I’d give anything to have a real man in my life for once, just once! Something’s gotta change in a big way or...shit. I’ve just, I’ve got to do this before I fall apart and die a 46-yr-old virgin. Wishing myself luck!

Chapter 1: Fateful Night

August 8th. 10 p.m. The blinding red and blue strobing from the ambulance lights lit up the dark street. It’d been a silent evening until its arrival. Two paramedics rushed up the concrete steps to the midnight blue steel entry door on the far side of the long, rectangular apartment building. The lights from the ambulance painted a brilliant hue onto the otherwise dull, gray brick building. Even the trim was gray and all of it was rusted and falling apart.

Another medic followed after, steering a gurney down the steps. Their patient was out cold and

stripped from the waist up. He had all kinds of medical apparatus on him; IVs, a breathing mask,

and a defibrillator on standby. Finally, the two medics maneuvered their patient down and into the waiting ambulance.

“Ok, what’ve we got?” barked the voice over the radio.

“Heart attack and attempted suicide,” the medic replied in a professional, matter-of-fact tone.

“Any defib?”

“Shocked him twice. 46-year-old male, obese, two bad wrist lacerations, and ingestion of pills.”

“10-4, we’ll be ready.”

The ambulance pulled into the emergency department at Adams County hospital. It wasn’t a fully-equipped center, but it would have to do. The patient was near death. The doors on the ambulance flew open and the stat team ran out to greet them. In charge was a tall, handsome young doctor named Jack Larson. They ran with the gurney inside and to a treatment room. There were four people working on him at once, but Jack kept order to the chaos.

“Nurse, type and cross-match his blood and start him on Narcan.”

“Yes, Doctor.”

“What’re his vitals?” he demanded.

“BP is 90 over 50, pulse 135,” the lead nurse replied.“Damn, too high. What’s our patient’s name?”

“Bernard Covington.” The other nurse read it from the report.

He touched the patient’s shoulder and leaned over him. “Mr. Covington? Can you hear me?” He pulled out his exam flashlight and pulled up the man’s eyelids one at a time to check the dilation.

“He’s out cold, doc. Cops said they found him like this, pills were right next to him.” One of the medics chimed in.

“How many and what kind?” Dr. Larson asked.

“Effexor, 50 mg. Had 30 pills filled, only 20 were found, and it was just filled.” The nurse drew the necessary blood and labeled it for the lab.

The doctor groaned. He hated seeing suicide cases. “All right, let’s pump his stomach, suture these wrists too. They’re pretty deep.”

“Yes, sir.” The nurse prepared the needle, cleansed the wounds, and very skillfully sewed up the wounds. He wrapped them in a thick, cushy layer of gauze and laid them at the patient’s side.

“Good job, Higgins.” Dr. Larson nodded at him.

“Damn, Dr. Jack; that’s the worst I’ve seen. Cops found a butcher knife with blood on it.”

Jack looked at the nurse in surprise. “A butcher knife? Damn, Bernard, you’d cut your hand off.”

He pursed his lips and shook his head.

“He’s stabilizing, Dr. Larson,” the nurse reported.

“Alright, go prep him and pump his stomach. Keep him on constant watch.”

“Yes, Doctor.”

Credence by Delphia Baisden

Blurb

James Morgan, lead guitarist for the rock band Eden, seems to have it all. That is, until Theo, Eden’s lead singer and James’s secret lover, violently betrays him, sending James into a deep depression and cutting their current tour and the band’s life short.

Kieran Jackson, the lead vocalist for the less successful band Lost and Found, is at his wits’ end. At thirty-three, he never dreamed he’d still be opening for bands comprised of twentysomethings. When Eden pulls out of the last few shows of their summer tour, Kieran returns home burned out and heartbroken.

Over a year later, James, Phil, and David of Eden decide to reform under a different name with Kieran as their new vocalist. James, never having forgotten his single interaction with Kieran, nor the only time he ever listened to him perform, knows Kieran’s the best choice.

James is still closeted—and skittish after his last relationship—and one fumbling, drunken kiss threatens to undo everything he’s worked so hard to rebuild, as well as the cover he’s fought to maintain.

Can James overcome his past, confront his demons, and reclaim his former fame? Or will he and the newly formed True North remain in Eden’s shadow forever? Can he finally find comfort in who he is, accept his past, and reopen his heart? Or will the memories of Theo’s betrayal and the subsequent fallout dash any hope of finding—and trusting—love again?

Trigger warning: this book contains explicit rape, as well as one failed suicide attempt by a main character.

Review
My Rating - 5 Stars!

Credence is an interesting, multi-layered rock star romance. Delphia Baisden does a great job of immersing the reader into the crazy world of fame and rock stars.

James and Kieran are two band members who fall in love while dealing with their past pains. Both have endured so damn much, and are struggling with moving forward with their passion and their lives in general.

James will grab you and burrow his way into your heart. He's a mess, both before and after his rape. He has a lot of issues to overcome, but he's stronger than he ever imagined.

Kieran's a remarkable man, struggling with his own physical issues, and always there to support James. He stays patient, never forcing the facts from James, and is a lovable guy.

Phil's the steady bandmate/best friend who's lovable and helps James throughout. He's a great character who tells it as it is, adding a whole lot of fun to the story.

At it's heart, this is a tender, yet raw, tale of survival. It's about hitting rock bottom and finding your way back.

Warnings include rape, alcoholism, anxiety, depression, and a suicide attempt. Definitely skip this one if these are triggers for you.

Credence is an emotional and gripping story that will leave you feeling all the feels. Definitely save this one for a time when you want to read something heavy. It's an impressive debut novel and I look forward to seeing what Delphia Baisden creates in the future.

Only they are not for a woman, but for the man suddenly sharing my bed. I'm not so sure I'm ready to give love another go.

Tucker

First Edition published as At War by KDP Select, 2015.

Review
My Rating - 5 Stars!

From War To Forever is a compelling and emotional romance by Andria Large that will pull on your heartstrings. It's emotionally charged, full of horrific times, and very eye-opening.

Dennis and Tucker are two ex-marines who meet in the hospital and are now roommates. They are brought together by friendship and need. Dennis is now living as a bouncer, after losing his wife and his leg in the war, two things that cause him a lot of suffering. Tucker is now working in IT after losing his best friend and his hearing in the war, the pain of which is excruciating.

Dennis is a mere shell of the man he used to be. His soul is empty and his eyes are lifeless. Only Tucker can bring him back to life, as he knows the pain on a personal level.

The Alzheimer story is well written, with a whole lot of knowledge, love and compassion. It's written in great detail and causes so much pain that's it had me wanting to cry many times.

My favorite parts are the romantic love scenes. As both men are exploring gay sex for the first time, these scenes are tender, and passionate. I love that their deep love on a friendship level leads to more. These men are brought together in a natural manner, and decide to go with their budding feelings. Their love for each other is there long before their attractions start.

My favorite sentiment is that there's beauty in finding someone who loves you when you can't even love yourself. So true.

Dennis and Tucker are survivors, who endure a long, hard-fought road to find their happily ever after.  They have a complicated journey on which they find peace and love. They have to deal with a sick mother, a homophobic brother, and more, in addition to their own issues with each other.
From War To Forever is a tale of learning how to find your own happiness, as you can't depend on someone else to make you happy. It's a complex and steamy Gay For You romance. Not only do Dennis and Tucker find a second chance at love, they also get a second chance at life. I absolutely love this book!

GRL 2018 SPOTLIGHT - JB Dabney - Crave (Brawlers #1)

In my attempt to cover some of the attending authors for this year's GRL,
I am reviewing

JB Dabney's Crave!

BLURB

Welcome to Brawlers Bar…

A quick pit stop for a comfortable bed to sleep turned into an eight-year stay. Vincent “Crave” Butler hit the road the day after college graduation and hadn’t looked behind him since. He’d swore to never stop moving, but the night he drove into Powers, Georgia changed the course of his life. He’d hit a bar called Brawlers with its rundown exterior and pride flag beside the door, the next day he had a job. Second in command to the Head of Brawler security, Crave found the place he didn’t have to run from. No one would call Crave sane. He lived to make people as uncomfortable as possible just for his own twisted amusement. That all changed when a certain cute as fuck bartender walked in for an interview.

No one wanted Twitch Harrison around. He was small, femme and annoying on his best days, downright abhorrent on his bad ones. When college turned out to be a no-go, and the parents canceled his credit cards he’d needed a job. Walking into Brawlers, the roughest gay bar in his hometown, was like a game of pick the thing that didn’t belong—him. The two owners, Scary and Tank, hired him on and four years later he was still that thing that didn’t belong. No one made it more apparent than bouncer Crave Butler who didn’t hide the fact he barely tolerated Twitch’s presence.

Crave threatened every man who thought they’d get the pretty Twitch but would Twitch rather be in their beds than his? Only one way to find out and he hoped Twitch was ready for forever because that’s what Crave was determined to have.

REVIEW
My Rating -  5 Stars!

I fell in love with Crave from the start, as JB Dabney's writing style and tone gripped me.

When we meet Crave and Twitch, they work together and are secretly in love with one another. What follows, as they start to acknowledge their attraction is an amazingly beautiful and tender romance.

Twitch was raised thinking sex is evil, and just the thoughts of having sex causes him anxiety.  He now has a lot of hang ups about sex, never even having kissed someone before. Twitch even spends some nights in bed with Lucky and Priest, just for comfort, as he tries to get used to contact again.

As Crave gives into his attraction to Twitch, the careful and protective way he handles Twitch is emotional, unexpected and intoxicating.

As their relationship develops, Crave and Twitch ultimately help balance each other, as one needs grounding and one needs someone to not make him feel like a monster. It is beautiful as Crave wants to be the one to comfort Twitch, instead of his usual desire for control. He wants Twitch to come to him for comfort instead of going to Lucky and Priest.
Twitch's backstory is heart breaking. He has cut himself for years and is covered in scars. This might be Twitch's first relationship, but the love is strong, and it's precious that both men can be themselves with the other. There's no pretending, no pretenses. That moment when he first bares himself to Crave, allowing Crave to see his scars is terrifically done.

There are so many things about this story that I love. One thing that can't go overlooked is Twitch's relationship with Lucky and Priest. This friendship is amazing.

Another is the chocolate covered coffee beans. That scene is one of the most hysterical scenes I've ever had the pleasure of reading!

I definitely recommend Crave to anyone who hasn't read it. And, now I need to go and read more of this JB Dabney series!
