Flirting with Fire (Shore Thing #3) by Grace Kilian Delaney

A stuntman with a love for fire.
A yoga teacher in search of zen.
A holiday season neither will forget.

Stunt performer and self-declared badass, Tate Astbury returns to his hometown to spend another dreaded Thanksgiving with his dad. But his father forgets and makes other plans, resigning Tate to a quiet and depressing holiday alone unless he can find someplace else to celebrate.

When Tate’s mischievous friend learns about the unfortunate twist, he dares Tate to enter a radio contest to become a fake boyfriend for a desperate caller’s holiday dinner, and Tate never turns down a dare.

Endre Michel is a mess. His yoga business is on the cusp of ruin, and his moms are visiting from out of state for the holiday, intent on meeting his boyfriend, a person Endre invented. Through the contest, he meets Tate, a crude, tattooed older man who plays the role of doting boyfriend so well, Endre suspects and hopes it’s not all for show.

Neither man can deny the unintended connection, and they struggle to overcome the distance between Tate’s put-together Hollywood career and the chaos surrounding Endre’s unsteady future—a situation that intensifies when an unthinkable tragedy uncovers a dark and painful truth.

Will Tate and Endre’s future together perish in flames, or can their love rise from the ashes?

Flirting with Fire can be read as a standalone holiday romance with several cups of angst, questionable jokes, a bird with a wicked sense of humor, a bed with loud, squeaky springs, and an HFN/HEA ending.

CW: suicide, substance abuse disorder, grief, mental illness

My Rating - 5 Stars!

Flirting with Fire is a wonderful hurt/comfort read by Grace Kilian Delaney. The third book in the Shore Thing series, it's easily read as a standalone.

The themes explored throughout this book are heavy. There's a huge emphasis on grief, guilt, depression, and addiction. Everything is written with extreme care, compassion, and heart. It's realistic, emotional, and all consuming. I am downright impressed with the way the author handles everything.

As for Tate and Endre, they meet via a radio contest for a fake boyfriend for the holidays situation. It's a cute thing and I adore their first meeting, as things get off to a bad start. They do eventually click and end up being great supports for one another.

Learning the details of these men's pasts is as emotional as it gets. Both suffered, and continue to suffer, greatly. The meat of this story is Endre and the fact that his life is at a crossroads. Things with his best friend are strained, he's struggling with his business decision, and he's trying to stay clean through it all. It's a lot to deal with and the reader gets a front row seat for it all.

One of the highlights of this story for me is the way Endre uses his videos to talk through his pain and addiction issues. He not only talks through his current issues, but we get flashbacks to how he started doing so and why. He's open and honest about his addiction and recovery, putting his vulnerability out into the world. It's remarkable and would be a fantastic way for many people to deal with such issues in real life. I truly love this.

I love and adore Tate and Endre as a couple. They have a lot on their plates and many reasons to not try to be together, including distance. But through it all, they genuinely are perfect for one another and help the other to heal. Fate is definitely at play for these two.

And then there's Endre and Jackson. What a complicated relationship these two have. Omg, my heart breaks for Jackson and I completely understand his decisions, despite the impact they have on Endre. I am crossing my fingers that we get Jackson's story, as I desperately need him to find love.

This story has a lot going on. Much of it is the men dealing with their emotional baggage. It has looks into Tate's career as a stunt man and the danger he faces. There's also real life danger to deal with, as well as some twists and turns that help bring this story full circle. I should say, the twists and turns weren't a shock to me, as I suspected the big reveal all along, but I love the way it's developed and executed. Another well done moment for the author.

In the end, Flirting With Fire is a beautiful story. This Grace Killian Delaney book is one hell of a ride. as we're reminded that sometimes what looks like a bad thing can actually be a new opportunity for better things. Definitely consider this book the next time you're in the mood for an angst ridden emotional journey towards healing. You won't regret it.

Best Man by Chris Delyani

Blurb

Frank Mercer is a forty-year-old high school math teacher, newly divorced from his husband and struggling to make his mortgage payments. He thinks his problems will be solved by a romance with his old friend Jonathan Butler, a man Frank has secretly admired for over twenty years. But Jonathan is engaged to Marcus Pierce, his unfaithful longtime boyfriend. When Jonathan asks Frank to serve as best man at his wedding, Frank must choose between supporting his friend and speaking from his heart.

Julio Robles is Frank’s roommate and a popular yoga teacher. Julio’s star student is none other than Marcus, Jonathan’s fiancĂ© and Frank’s nemesis. And Marcus has made it clear he’d like more from Julio than yoga lessons. When Frank asks Julio to pretend to be his boyfriend on a dinner date with Jonathan and Marcus, Julio can’t resist accepting the invitation. And finds himself in over his head.

Frank and Julio invent a fake relationship in the face of Marcus and Jonathan’s all-too-real relationship. But which relationship is real, which relationship is fake? Their story leads them to ask themselves fundamental questions about love, friendship, and what it means to be true to one’s partner.

My Rating - 4 Stars!

It's tough to describe Best Man by Chris Delyani. It isn't the best book ever, since all the men are flawed, and not very likable. But damn it, I couldn't put it down. For that, I am giving it 4 stars.

This tale involves best friends, roommates, and some serious cheating. There's an open relationship, where only one man tends to stray, and stray often he does.

In short, Frank's in love with his friend Jonathon, who happens to be engaged to Marcus. To save face, Frank pretends to be dating his border, Julio, who happens to catch the eye of Marcus. And this is how it begins.

This story involves jealousy, with one man desperately jealous of another, to the point of purposely trying to hurt him. Frank may just get his happy ending, but the path he travels is one of the most complicated paths ever. He has to endure a whole lot of mess before he's ever going to find real love.

That said, I could not put this book down. It didn't matter that I found Frank and Jonathon to be pathetically passive. It didn't matter that I hated Martin and certainly wanted to strangle Julio at times. I couldn't stop reading. I needed to know what was going to happen.

This romance may just be one on going shit-show, but it was definitely an intriguing shit-show. It was a train wreck I couldn't look away from.

I find the cover to be interesting, as it would indicate a fun, happy romance, instead of this most complicated of romances. We certainly aren't laughing with this tale of dreams and longing, of pain and hurt.

Best Man is complex, with some horrible characters, but it's one of the most riveting books I've ever read.

It's been a rough couple of years for Marek Hafer, roaming hockey protagonist and pugilistic expert. Ending up in Berger Lake, Pennsylvania, on a financially unstable minor league team might just be the ending his wretched career deserves. On the other side of thirty, Marek knows his time on skates is dwindling. His goal now is to spend a few quiet years playing for the Berger Lake Badgers, knock a few helmets together as needed, and then call it quits before his salty personality gets him booted out of hockey permanently.

After a bloody encounter his first night on the ice, the Badgers coach suggests that Marek find a way to lower his violent tendencies before he’s sent packing yet again. That decree leads Marek to knock on the door of his next-door neighbor, Shey Pierson, the owner of Sun Touch Yoga Studio. Shey ticks every box Marek has with his soft blue eyes, flowing golden hair, and long limber legs. The only problem is that Shey is yin to Marek’s yang.

Can a man famed for throwing punches find serenity in the arms of a man known for his tranquil ways?

My Rating - 5 Stars!

Marek's a fun character, as he's surly and aggressive, and in trouble with the hockey world. He's the bad boy of hockey and as we all know, once a troublemaker, always a troublemaker. But everything changes when the bisexual Marek meets his pansexual yoga instructor neighbor, as he's instantly enamored by the sexy, flexible man.

What follows is a great story of two men helping one another to better themselves, and finding love in the process. Shey's around to help Marek find his inner peace and help him calm down. If Marek wants to be in Shey's life, he needs to deal with his anger issues. I love that just being in Shey's presence calms him down.
The author does a stellar job developing Marek's tragic background, and everything that's led him to where he is now. It's emotional, full of understanding and will leave you suffering along side him.

Shey's free-flowing, tranquil personality is a great opposite for this tough hockey guy. Watching the power he holds over Marek is spectacular. Shey's a calm, charming, and kind man who can help to balance the gruff brute.

Their story has it's tough moments, it's sweet moments, and it's steamy moments, as well as some scary moments.  I love the author's writing style, and her empathy for her characters.

Marek's journey is beautiful and fulfilling, as he finally finds something more important than hockey. They have to deal with family issues, the loss of a father, and a stalker along the way, but everything changes when he realizes Shey is all that matters to him, instead of hockey.

Touch Of A Yellow Sun is a great, compelling book, full of heart and soul. VL Locey perfectly tackles Marek dealing with his fall from grace, and finding love in the process. Despite the heavy nature of this tale at some times, it's delivered in a wonderful manner, and lacks the potential heaviness on your heart. In all, it's a tremendous read which I highly recommend.

How Not to Sin (Lovestrong #2) by Susan Hawke

Blurb

One regular guy who happens to be a preacher…

Reverend Dr. Gabe Samson doesn’t think he’s better than any of the people in his church, so please don’t put him on a pedestal. While he’s never hidden the fact that he identifies as bisexual, he’s never acted on it either. Gabe isn’t happy to learn that the sole reason he was hired to pastor the LGBT-friendly church was that the ruling elders wanted a safe poster child for inclusivity—in other words, they wanted the rainbow flag without letting it fly.

Plus one easygoing, new age kinda guy…

Seth Thomas owns Holistic Healing, a metaphysical shop and yoga studio. He’s never really been a relationship kinda guy, but only because he hasn’t met the right man yet. Seth is laid back and goes with the flow. When fate drops a hot preacher in his lap, why wouldn’t he accept the gift?

Equals a pair of men who click from the start.

The two men find it almost too easy to get together, especially Gabe, who is fully embracing his bi side for the first time. Nothing in life is simple though. While Gabe and Seth are busy falling in love, they face an anti-gay hate group, a divided church, and a ruling elder who is hell-bent on sowing discord. Between Gabe’s patient wisdom and Seth’s snark, the pair fight the growing drama with the strongest weapons in their arsenal: love and humor.

This is the third book in the LOVESTRONG series about finding love and being yourself in a small town, and the third in series. Intended only for 18+ readers, this is an mm romance full of all the fun, fluff, and feels you’d want from an S. Hawke book.

Note: This isn’t a trigger warning, but please be prepared for a few instances of ignorance and hate speech, and mentions of violence. This is a romance, not a sermon—but please keep in mind that the main character is a pastor dealing with real-life issues in his church and these truths are reflected in Gabe.

My Rating - 5 Stars!

How Not To Sin is the second book in Susan Hawke's Lovestrong series. And it's as great as I hoped it would be.

Gabe's a bisexual pastor, who's never been with a guy before. When he falls for the yoga teacher, Seth, his life is set on a new course. Their relationship is sweet and tender, and they are wonderful as a couple, with some fun teasing.

I enjoy the religion versus Christianity conversations. This is so damn relevant right not that it makes for a good read. Gabe's views on religion are very refreshing, as he's loving and accepting, instead of being judgemental.

In typical fashion for this author, there's a whole lot of humor. My favorite scene is Loretta at the sex shop. Hysterical!

How Not To Sin is fantastic and riveting, with a great group of characters. It's hot and sexy, and am all around enjoyable read. I'm definitely loving this series so far and am excited to see what's next.

Note - If you don't like books that deal with religious homophobia, skip this one.

Fair Catch (Players of LA #2) by Leigh Carman

Blurb

Two men.

One night of passion.

They never expected to see each other again.

They were wrong.

Tobias Bennett is a quiet and unassuming man who teaches yoga and enjoys parkour. Though he is proud to be gay, an abusive relationship with a domineering man has left Tobias wary of romance, and he keeps to himself in his tidy Los Angeles apartment.

Pro football player Sullivan Archer is Tobias’s complete opposite: loud, brash, fond of the spotlight… and deep in the closet. When a hamstring injury sends Van to Tobias as part of his therapy, neither of them is expecting to come face-to-face with his one-night stand. Now they’re stuck together throughout Van’s healing process, and the close proximity will force them to deal with some hard truths. For Tobias, it’s realizing his hookup is a celebrity. For Van, it means accepting that he likes Tobias more than he wanted. They’ll both have to acknowledge that if they choose to pursue a relationship, their lives will change in big ways.

*The Players of LA Series are standalones, but characters from each book to appear in subsequent novels. It is recommended to read in order to maximize the reading experience*

Fair Catch is one of those special sports romances that I fell for immediately. It is everything I love about sports romances.

Van's a closeted football player, who's one of the best in the game. Anyone can understand why he's been hiding in the closet, as it's realistic to fear telling your teammates that's your gay in any sport, let alone a macho one.

Meeting Toby changes his world. It's a long and scary road for them, but Toby's the guy who inspires Van to stop hiding in the closet.

Toby's ex, and the story of the abuse Toby suffered at his hands is tragic. My heart was breaking for the loveable man.

I absolutely love this story, and I am shocked I had not heard of it until now. It has everything that I love in a sports romance. Yet, even better, Toby is a wonderful mix of being a yoga master and is a lover of parkour. Love it!
I enjoy the ups and downs of their relationship, the hiding, and all the complications that entails.

Leo is Toby's best friend, and he's positively charming, adding some more fun to  the tale.

In Fair Catch, Leigh Carman masters the challenges associated with being a closeted athlete and anyone dating one. The fear, the secrets, and the animosity. It's a wonderfully sweet and sexy romance that I loved.
