Finding Me by Chris Breaux

Kye has convinced himself that he has it all. Or at least all he wants. He owns his own business and has a loving family that he created himself. If he is troubled by his lack of a social life, all he must do look at the gay dating scene in his small town to remember why. He wants a partner, not a hookup.

Wealthy, handsome businessman Seth has managed to carve out two different lives for himself. As the heir to his daddy’s fortune, he works in his dad’s business directing the company’s philanthropy department while dating beautiful women. As a gay man, he quietly satisfies his longing for men through a string of one-night stand hookups far away from prying eyes.

When these two meet, both men must decide whether their very different outlooks on life leave any room for love to shine through.

My Rating - 4 Stars!

Chris Breaux's Finding Me is a riveting read.

It all starts with a bang, as Kye is a man with nightmares. Both he and Seth have upsetting backgrounds. They are opposites, with their rich versus poor statuses showing, and being an obstacle between them. There's an instant attraction between the two but they don't have an easy ride ahead of them.

Kye grew up in foster care, spent most of his life with no family, until finally finding one with some supportive brothers, who add a lot to the story. His experiences include being attacked and abused as a homeless street kid. He's a survivor who I can't help but to admire for his strength.

And then there's Seth who never had a choice in life. His father rules his every decision, controlling him with his homophobic views. One wants to pull Seth from his life, but he already has major abandonment issues and just can't risk losing his father.

This is a tale with self worth issues, as the two men help one another to find a purpose in life. It's a fast read with easy to love characters. The author includes hate crimes, abuse, and attacks to up the angst. In addition, there's a stalker who adds some danger and suspense.

Finding Me is a sweet mystery/romance as Kye and Seth both want one another, yet have a long journey to feel worthy of that kind of love. Chris Breaux guides these men to find a true sense of family, and it's a decent read by this debut author.

Mascara & Bandages (Mary's Boys #3) by Brandon Witt

Amazon Link - Available in KU
Goodreads Link

Ariel Merman is a new drag queen who’s already finding a family at Hamburger Mary’s. After a performance as Ariel, Zachary Cooper walks home in his makeup and is assaulted by homophobes. Zachary’s worry that the attack has thrown a wrench in his good fortune is eased when he looks into the eyes of his doctor.

Dr. Teegan Chau is a little lost after divorcing his wife and coming out of the closet, but he can’t deny the pull he feels toward the young man he patches up. Luckily, Zachary takes the initiative and asks Teegan out. But attraction is the easy part of their blossoming relationship—as they deal with an ex-wife and child, being a drag queen in a heteronormative culture, Zachary’s lingering trauma from his attack, and Teegan acclimating to life as part of an out-and-proud gay couple.

The challenges seem daunting at the start of a romance. Can Zachary and Teegan make it through the rough patches and take a chance on the love that’s been missing from both their lives?

My Rating - 4.5 Stars!

Mascara & Bandages, the third book in the Mary's Boys series, is an amazing story. This Brandon Witt book is best read as part of the series, but could easily be rad as a standalone.

Being a drag queen at St Mary's is what saves Zachary, as being Ariel helps set him free. Zachary is timid, but Ariel is bold and confident. But most important, Ariel is worry free.

Teegan's a doctor who meets the young Zachary after he's gay bashed. Like Zachary, Teegan is also wonderfully complex. He has an ex wife who's actually lovely, and a young daughter. His reasons for being in the closet are well explored.

The attack is a tough read, and the aftermath messes with Zachary emotionally and physically. Both men come with their share of issues, including a whole hell of a lot of doubts and fears. But along the way they find strength and love, as they compliment one another perfectly. There's also some good humor in this story of courage and trust.

Overall, Zachary and Teegan have a tender and sweet relationship. It's a beautiful journey that is full of heat and emotion. There are homophobic parents, with some barbs that left me numb.

Mascara & Bandages, the third book in the Mary's Boys series is well worth a read. Brandon Witt brings all the emotions to the table in this story, starting with the gay bashing incident and ending with a HEA. It's a wonderful combination of pain and suffering along with attraction, chemistry, and love.

Synopsis

Noah Lancaster’s life is a mess. He doesn’t know much about his past or who is parents really were. When he’s beaten on the streets one night while sleeping rough, the attack doesn’t feel like just another random assault on a vulnerable target. Somebody wanted Noah dead. But who’d want to hurt him? He’s a nobody who doesn’t know where he came from or who he truly is.

Harry Cooper wants to launch his career as an investigative journalist by telling the stories of the hardships faced by the homeless. His latest subject was lucky to survive a brutal attack—the mean
streets almost swallowing him up like so many others. Noah is a mystery to Harry and it seems to the man himself.

When Noah’s attack brings these two men together, neither could imagine they’re about to be pulled into a mystery one hundred and thirty years old—and half a world away. They’re about to discover a
secret someone has already killed once to protect and one that might get them both killed.

Sometimes who you are goes far beyond who you thought you were.

Review
My Rating - 4.5 Stars!

Karrie Roman's Beyond Identity is a great read.

From the start, I fell in love with Noah. He's an absolutely loveable character, homeless and attacked while on the streets. He meets Harry when the reporter comes to interview him about being attacked while homeless.

What follows is a good mystery, with twists and turns I certainly never saw coming. The two begin on an adventure neither could have ever expected.
Their tale includes danger, action, suspense, and a sweet romance.

Their relationship evolves naturally, as they spend time together, trying to protect and save Noah. These two are just super sweet together. It's beautiful watching them on their journey towards love. And in the end, their story is about finding someone who's good for you; someone who makes you smile.

And Harry's Pearl, omg, best scene ever! You'll just have to read to find out.

The writing is great, with two well developed characters, a well done mystery, and an overall tender love story.

Beyond Identity is a riveting mystery romance by Karrie Roman. It's a whole lot of fun and I am once again left impressed by this author.

Noah had been here before. People didn’t have sporadic stints of living on the streets and expect to escape the occasional bashing. An assault could come from anywhere—another rough sleeper,
a junkie, pimp, or sometimes from some teenage twat who thought they were being hilarious beating the shit out of someone whose life had already kicked them in the teeth. When someone was homeless, they were either invisible or a goddamn target. The fucking irony.

This was different though. This wasn’t some son of a bitch grabbing the nearest body and laying his fists into them. Noah had been stalked. He’d watched this bastard skip first one and then the
next rough sleeper he’d come across in the alley until he’d spotted Noah.

Noah recognised what the man wanted, could tell by the tense set of his shoulders, the white knuckles of his clenched fists. He wanted to make Noah hurt. Sensing danger became heightened when surrounded by it day and night with no locked door to offer even the illusion of safety. So, when he’d first spotted this man, Noah had wanted to run, he’d never wanted to run so desperately in his life. But he had nowhere to go. He’d chosen poorly the night before—a rookie mistake, though he was no
rookie to sleeping on the streets.

He’d been so damn exhausted, when searching for a spot to lay his head, he hadn’t cared that there’d been no second exit, no escape route in this alleyway. He’d trapped himself, and a monster had walked right into his trap. But Noah was the one caught in the deadly snare.

Noah could fight. He was scrappy, no finesse, no training, but he could throw a half-decent punch. He was capable of delivering a hit to make his opponent think twice about going after him, and if
that didn’t work, he knew how to bite, kick, scratch; hell, he’d go for the alls if he had to. Another thing learned on the street if someone wanted to survive was to use every weapon in their arsenal.

The monster coming for him was tall, not the biggest man Noah had ever seen, but definitely the biggest one he’d ever had to fight. The darkness shadowed his features, but he knew the eyes were
bleak, cruel; he’d seen a flash of them in the streetlight near the top of the alleyway, or maybe his imagination was making the man’s physicality as sinister as his demeanour. Noah felt those eyes on him. Glaring. And he wondered what the hell he’d done to this guy to piss him off so badly.

Noah stood, legs wide, shoulders high, chest out, trying to make himself appear as big as possible. From the man’s bearing and manner, it was evident he had next to no chance of scaring this guy
off, but he had to try. Any fight he didn’t end up actually fighting was a win.

Much of his time on the street Noah was alone, but never more so than when some fucker decided to take a potshot at him. He didn’t really blame anyone for their indifference. They lived in a
don’t-get-involved kind of world and when no one had their back having someone else’s could be very hard.

The man kept coming. He was close now, close enough to allow Noah to see him more clearly. His eyes were as cruel as Noah had thought, but the rest of his face he’d describe as a baby face, soft,
almost sweet-looking. His cheeks were puffed as though full of cotton wool, a perfectly shaped snub nose sat above rich red cupid’s bow lips pulled into a sneer. Without more light he was unable to pick accurate skin and hair colour, but he’d guess fair for both.

Noah raked his gaze quickly down the man’s body. He was muscular but not hulk-like. He had no obvious weapon, though from the size of his hands, Noah suspected he’d be able to do plenty of damage with those alone.

He wondered if the man would speak. Sometimes they did, especially the arsehole teens who, for whatever reason, felt the need to justify why they were beating the shit out of their victim, all while bragging amongst themselves about how tough they were.

Faster than he’d have thought possible, the man lashed out. Noah’s head snapped back, and a spray of blood bloomed from his nose, the sickening crack turning his stomach. He hadn’t had a chance to
move. The stranger’s speed and accuracy confirming to Noah this man was no amateur—and Noah was in big trouble.

Before his head had even righted, he took a blow to his stomach, the force of it doubling him over. He gasped for air, trying to suck in big gulps through his mouth. The man’s knee connected with
his already broken nose before he could catch his breath, and the follow-up blow to the back of his head sent him to his knees.

Noah didn’t stand a chance; he understood how dire his situation was now. This man was a professional—he knew what he was doing.

His vision was darkening, tiny purple-black spots making it difficult for him to see clearly. He lashed out with a fist, connecting with what he thought was the man’s thigh. He wondered if his attacker even felt the blow there was so little power behind it.

The man aimed for his head again, but somehow Noah managed to dodge backwards so the blow was only glancing. Unlike in the movies, Noah knew a normal person couldn’t take too many direct,
powerful hits to their head without substantial damage or worse. His focus was scattered, not sharp enough for him to decide what to do about the punches raining down on him though. Did he duck and cover, hope to ride out the attack while protecting his head? Or did he try to get up and fight?

He kind of roll crawled to put some distance between them but the man charged relentlessly after him. Noah kicked out with his leg. He tried to aim for the man’s knee, but his head was spinning
worse than the one time he’d had way too much whisky. He wasn’t sure where his foot ended up connecting, but his attacker only grunted and kept coming.

Noah curled into a ball, pulling his head down to his chest and wrapping his arms around the vulnerable area. He felt a sharp hard kick to his back and then another. He tried to roll to his
knees, but the bastard wouldn’t relent even a little.

“Hey! You there!” A booming voice called.

Noah’s attacker stopped immediately. He heard running footsteps and glanced out from beneath his arms just in time to see the man sprint down the alley, barrel into a man and woman at the opening,
and keep right on running. He didn’t have the energy to move, much less chase after him or even call out for help. He closed his eyes and groaned.

He wasn’t quite sure what happened to time then—it either slowed down or sped right up. He was too out of it to know which. He heard voices, vaguely registered they were occasionally talking to him, but he couldn’t be fucked answering. He wanted to sleep. His eyes were welded shut—they had to be—but lights flashed continually behind them. There were more voices and then some arsehole was poking and prodding at him. It was the strangest thing—as though he was there but wasn’t.

One minute he was curled up on the cold, filthy concrete and then suddenly, he was being jostled around in some kind of vehicle. Ambulance, probably—at least he hoped it wasn’t a cop car. He smelled pee and knew it was his, but he didn’t have the wherewithal to be ashamed. He was amazed he was capable of smelling at all, given he was sure his nose must be shattered in a million pieces. Mixed with the acidic pee was the coppery stench of blood.

Someone was asking him for his name. He thought his name was Noah, but everything was a bit hazy. He couldn’t for the life of him think of his last name.

“Can you tell me your name?” the voice asked again.

“Shh. I’m sore,” he replied, though the words were so slurred he didn’t know if he’d be understood.

He heard a soft chuckle and then that damn voice again. “I know you’re sore, but can you tell me your name.”

“Noah,” he groaned, so the voice would shut up.

“Noah, do you have any allergies?”

Jesus fucking Christ, didn’t this idiot know he just had the stuffing beaten out of him? He didn’t give a shit about allergies. He groaned again. The fucker could take his whimpered reply however
he wanted.

“I’ll take that as a no. I’m going to give you a shot of morphine. Have you had anything to drink tonight?”

“Don’t drink.” Fuck, the slurring was getting worse. He shook his head no to make sure this guy would understand him. He felt like his goddamn brain was rattling around in his skull.

“Okay, good. Here we go then, just a small pinch.”

Noah felt a bite—a fucking painful one—in his arse cheek. “Fuck,” he spat. Small pinch my arse.

“I know, sorry. Morphine shots kinda hurt.”

“Arsehole,” he groaned. Every part of him hurt, but hopefully the morphine would kick in soon. He knew he was being taken to a hospital but wished he wasn’t. He wished he could talk them into
letting him out now. With his veins full of morphine to dull the pain, he’d be okay. He’d find somewhere to curl up for a while and sleep it off. But they had their duty of care and blah, blah, blah. He’d sign something to say they did all they could, and he’d happily take the blame if he died from his injuries on the street.

He hated hospitals, loathed anywhere really that put him on the radar. He was no criminal, and he wasn’t on the runbut the idea of anyone knowing exactly where he was sent shivers up his spine
for no particular reason except that’s just the way he was made.

Hands busied themselves all over his body. He had neither the energy nor the ability to open his eyes and watch what they were doing. From the noises being made and the sensations on his skin, they were putting in an IV and attending to his wounds. Noah floated happily on his morphine cloud, content to lie back and let those hands have their way with him. He still wished he wasn’t headed for a hospital, but he’d keep the worry for when the drugs wore off.

He felt the cold air rush in when the doors of the ambulance were yanked open. His body was jostled around when the stretcher was pulled from the back, though he knew they were trying to be
careful—that pesky duty of care. He really tried to peel at least one eyelid open when he heard voices gathered over him, discussing him as if he wasn’t there. He heard them say assault and concussion and lucky. He didn’t care about any of it. He was in no pain now, and all his other worries seemed far off, silly, unimportant.

He heard them say something about topping the dose, and then even the haziness in his brain faded as he drifted away.

Still on the rebound and unable to trust another man, Enzo never expected a chance encounter with Florian. The one person he thought he would never see again. The one person he missed the most.

Were they truly meant to get a second chance or were they doomed from the start?

REWIND is an MM romance novel set entirely in France. Though part of a series, it is a standalone story without a cliffhanger.

Review
My Rating - 5 Stars!

Wow. I love Rewind. Rowan Shaw excels with this riveting romance.

Enzo and Florian were high school boyfriends, but haven't spoken in a long time. We're treated to an inspirational tale of "rewinding" and going back to where they were before. The men need to  "rewind" to find out what went wrong and to try to make things work now.

The tone is full of melancholy, as it's a tale of overcoming separation. They have a lot to deal with, and the tone sets the scene perfectly. In fact, I found myself totally engrossed by the somber mood, feeling bad for the guys even when they weren't sad. I was instantly thrown into a gloomy and depressed for them state. But, it's also a refreshing story of hope, in addition to the angst and heartbreak

I love Enzo. He's adapted extremely well to his hearing loss and it's beautiful that he doesn't want to live in fear. The details about people with hearing loss, both the treatment of them, and the education aspects, are written with knowledge and care. As well, the thoughtlessness of his ex is very well captured.

My favorite quote is "They saw deafness as a disability; I saw it as a gift."

Their relationship deals with family issues, deception, hate crimes, and being kicked out by one's family. They face bad times, scary times, angry times, and end with love and happiness.

An interesting topic is bisexuality and the assumption that a bisexual person can't be monogamous. It's a thing I tend to hear a lot, so I appreciate this discussion.

Told in a third person dual pov, the reader is able to complete get into their minds. The writing is superb, allowing us to feel every emotion, while also capturing the environment in a first-rate manner. A debut novel, I am extremely impressed.

Rewind is a story of dealing with misunderstandings and lies. It's a wonderful second chance romance that had me gripped from the start, as the two men try to rekindle their old relationship. It's fantastic and accomplished, full of hope and romance.

If he can just get through his fifth year unnoticed, maybe a future living as the person he was born to be is possible. Yet love is love, and when you fall hard enough, intentions crumble, plans detour, and secrets are revealed.
From multi-award-winning author Mia Kerick, comes a powerful, timely, and life-changing novel, which follows two teenagers nursing broken hearts and seeking acceptance, and who together realize running away isn’t always the answer.

Review
My Rating - 5 Stars!

All Boy is a stellar read by Mia Kerick. There's something special about the way Mia Kerick writes transgender teen stories. She excels at writing an honest and realistic character, while placing them into real situations.

All Boy is a novel about fear, fear, and more fear. It's about the fear of living one's truth, the fear of facing those consequences, and the fear of the unknown.

Two teens who struggle with how the world sees them. This is a story of humiliation, shame, and self-loathing.

As 5th year high school students, both Jaiden and Callie have a chance to re-do their senior year. Callie's been abused, and prefers to keep to herself, while avoiding boys. But when she sees Jaiden, she's struck by his beauty, and is instantly intrigued. What she doesn't know is that Jaiden's keeping a secret, as this is the first year he's living as a man. He escaped from his home, trying to live his true self., but the secrets result in pain and guilt.

Jaiden's family are the typical southern Bapists, who'd never be able to accept a transgender child. Thus, Jaiden's even hiding from them.

The dichotomy of the two Jaidens is heart-breaking. He spends most of his time living as Jaiden, but at home needs to live as Jada. It's so damn sad and tough to read at times.

Both teens struggle with body issues; Callie with her weight, and Jaiden with his gender. It's fantastic the way they both have their own fears and secrets. In the end, both Callie and Jaiden learn a lot, about themselves as well as each other.

Their relationship involves misunderstanding, confusion, pain, and hurt. There are plenty of awkward moments, that are written in an excellent manner.

All Boy is a stunning story is two young adults navigating their way through their new normal. Mia Kerick stuns with a tale of discovering what love means, as well as learning what pain and regret are. And at it's heart, Mia writes an accomplished romance that illustrates the loneliness of being transgender.

My Review
5 Stars

Cameron and Rylan is one of the most intense insta-love stories I've ever read. Valerie Ullmer spared no punches with this one. It's an absolutely delightful book.

The night they meet, Cameron saves Rylan by taking him into his home. Rylan's obviously scared and in danger, as his brother's best friend is after him. What follows in an insta-love unlike any others.

Their relationship develops quickly, as it's natural and easy. Rylan's a young man who fears so much, but instantly trusts Cameron. Cameron's a virgin who's never welcomed anyone's touch before. But, with Rylan the connection is instant and he finds someone he craves to touch. Cameron's never been attracted to a guy before, but he can't deny the feelings he has for Rylan.

With all the abuse Rylan's suffered, he is still suffering from nightmares. This part is so damn touching and sad. Their romance is one of finding someone who compliments you perfectly. It's about finding someone who has your back through thick and thin. It's about finding someone who wants you to be your true self. It's about learning there's more to life than just surviving.

Cameron and Rylan has romance in spades. They're hot and intense as can be together, with amazing sex scenes. I find Cameron's demi-sexuality to be developed well and perfectly explored. Rylan's growth is amazing, as he grows extreme strength and confidence, all because of his love with Cameron.

Cameron and Rylan is a fantastic GFY romance. It's the ultimate tale of insta love. It's beautiful and tender and I loved every moment. Some people are just meant to be together. Valerie Ullmer does a stellar job of writing an intimate, all-consuming love. It never feels forced, but feels genuine throughout. You can feel the chemistry and the level of care jumping off the pages. It's a wonderful, feel-good, and sweet read.

Excerpt

#1

This wasn’t his scene. Along with the loud music came the dancing bodies, sharp and piercing howls of laughter, but most of all the flirting. He’d known what the night held when his friends insisted on going out and despite his hesitation, Cameron had agreed.

He wouldn’t say he was lonely since he was the one who quit the football team the year before and secluded himself using any excuse he thought of to avoid social interactions. But from time to time, he missed his friends.

The music blared from the various speakers around the crowded club, but it had a good beat as it blended from one track to another. He nodded toward the bartender as he handed him a new beer before he turned toward the crowd, scanning the dance floor.

Cameron didn’t hold in a laugh as he spotted Tim, one of his best friends, dance up to a girl with a huge smile on his face. When she rolled her eyes, he reversed the other way with a friendly a wave. That was Tim. He let nothing get to him, even such an obvious rejection.

Unlike his friends, Cameron had no interest in finding a date for the night. But he watched his friends as they maneuvered around the bar amongst the gyrating bodies having a great time.

As his gaze landed on Aaron, who had a blonde wrapped around him as they swayed back and forth, a small hand landed on his chest before a compact body pressed up to his side. Cameron blinked down at the beautiful woman who smiled at him. Her eyes traveled over him, down and back up again, unable to keep her predatory gaze from his body.

Cameron sighed. She wasn’t the first person who thought he was available for a good time, but she was the first to touch him without permission.

Attraction was fleeting. At this point in his life, Cameron had no desire to pursue a physical relationship with anyone. Temporary attachments made his skin crawl for a reason he never understood, and he knew as she spoke she wouldn’t be more than that.

“Wanna head to my place? It’s quiet and we can talk.”

“No, thanks.”

He supposed people thought he was a typical jock, looking to score around every corner. Although he’d been told he was attractive, he knew attraction was subjective. His six foot three height, wide shoulders, and lean muscles resulted from years of conditioning and training. His parents gifted him with great genes, his light brown hair, and hazel eyes completed the package. But for him, he wanted something substantial.

#2

“Would you like to dance, Cameron?”

He couldn’t help his pause at the question. “I would love to, but I’ve never had a lot of rhythm and I’ll trample you.”

Rylan laughed and Cameron liked the scratchy, tinkling sound. He gifted him with something precious and rare because Cameron smiled as he realized Rylan’s laugh matched his soft, masculine voice.

“Don’t worry. I’ve got you.” Rylan slid his hand into Cameron’s bigger one and he allowed Rylan to pull him onto the dance floor.

As the other man led the way, Cameron’s gaze roamed over Rylan’s form. He loved how his hair, even when damp from the exertion of dancing, looked soft. He wanted to run his hands through it to see if it was as downy as it looked. The blond of Rylan’s hair was a little darker than his own, but it brought out the color in his eyes.

Rylan’s skin shimmered under the lights and Cameron had the strong urge to lean down and lick a swath along his delectable neck, tasting him. Because of his thoughts, he flushed when Rylan turned back to him and moved his hands to Cameron’s hips.

“Close your eyes.”

Cameron, trusting this man he’d met, he complied with his request. Cut off from one of his senses, sensations thrummed through him when Rylan tapped out a beat with his fingers against his waist. He’d somehow burrowed his hand underneath his tee and Cameron could the pads of his fingers on his bare skin.

“Are you paying attention?” Rylan laughed when Cameron’s head jerked up and caught his gaze.
