Deliverance (Darkest Skies #2) by Garrett Leigh

Amazon Link   - Available in KU

Banished gangster Benito Martell is living on the edge. An explosive hook-up in a club gifts him the relief he craves, but nothing about his life is ever so simple. Complications abound, and before long, he’s falling for the only man who can save his family from eviction.

Recovering addict Mickey Larwood has worked hard to leave his past behind. He can’t look back, not even for the beautiful Benito, the last soul on earth he expected to steal his heart—a soul who’s knee-deep in the underworld Mickey has run hundreds of miles to escape.

Benito can deny it all he wants, but Mickey can smell trouble a mile off.

And Benito is trouble with a capital T. As his desperate lies unravel, so does the fledgling love that’s grown between them. If Benito wants deliverance from his old life and a future with Mickey, old ghosts need to die.

If they don’t kill him first.

Deliverance is an angsty standalone MM romance novel, with second chances, found family, friends-to-lovers, and buckets of hurt/comfort themed loveliness. Trigger warnings for addiction and childhood trauma.

My Rating - 4.5 Stars!

Deliverance is the second book in Garrett Leigh's Darkest Skies series. As the title suggests, this series is a tough and raw one. Each is easily read as a standalone.

If you enjoy tough hurt/comfort romances, you will enjoy this book. If you enjoy seeing men overcome their tough pasts and circumstances, you will enjoy this book.

Mickey and Benito's relationship is messy and complex, but also wonderful in the end. And damn, their sex scenes are sizzling.

After hooking up, they find themselves in a complicated relationship. With a mix of business and pleasure, it isn't the easiest thing ever.

Mickey goes above and beyond to help Benito's family. But at the same time, Mickey struggles with the life Benito's living. Running drugs and living the criminal life is something Mickey wants nothing to do with. Add in Mickey's former drug addiction, and he can't be near Benito's life.

Of course, the angst and tension is high. The twists and turns are emotionally filled. I seriously was surprised with the storyline. The secondary characters add a lot to the tale, with Benito's sister being fabulous.

Deliverance is powerful and well worth a read. This Garrett Leigh romance is full of chemistry and longing, while also full of the struggles between good and bad. I'm excited to see what happens next in this gritty series.

RELEASE BLITZ, EXCERPT & REVIEW - Turnabout (Vino & Veritas #9) by Laurel Greer

TURNABOUT BY LAUREL GREER

Release Date: May 6, 2021

Amazon Link   - Available in KU

I don’t have time for an unplanned visit home to help out in my father’s struggling letterpress shop. My stint in Vermont will have to be short, for a couple of reasons:

One, I’m a busy executive trying to climb the corporate ladder.

Two, my ex is still my dad’s right-hand man in the shop. And I am not over him.

Nothing has changed at the Burlington shop. Auden still has his infuriatingly sexy Scottish accent. He’s still hot, and still stubborn. Between operating the antique press with his shirtsleeves rolled up, and moonlighting at Burlington’s hottest inclusive wine bar, he pushes every one of my attraction buttons.

My falling-in-love-again buttons, too. Except I’m his polar opposite. I love change, and taking chances. Everything he avoids in life.

So why am I trying to convince him to reach for more than we’ve ever dreamed of—the possibility of forever?

Turnabout is a second-chance romance with interfering family, groveling, and a large helping of artisan stationery geekery.

My Rating - 4.5 Stars!

Turnabout, Laurel Greer's contribution to the Vino & Veritas world, is
a wonderful, heart warming story. The ninth book in this multi-author series, it's read as a standalone.

Auden and Carter get a second chance in this sweet read, but their pasts are an obstacle and they live far apart, so it isn't all easy. Their story is one of men with different priorities, a lot of tension, and intense chemistry. Love their chemistry.

This story is wonderful, with the men finding their past and present starting to collide. I enjoy the way things develop and they start to find their feelings taking over.

I appreciate that their reasons for breaking up are understandable and valid. The author fully explores that people change and circumstances chance.

The writing drew me in immediately and I couldn't put it down. Written in alternating first person pov, I enjoy the way the men come to life. The small town feel is great, and I adore all the secondary characters.

Turnabout is a great read. This Laurel Greer book fits in well with the series as a whole, and is a wonderful addition. I highly recommend this book when you're in the mood for a small town, second chance romance.

He lifts a dark eyebrow. “I said, I want to work with someone willing to wallow with paper and design. Tease out the one-of-a-kind magic.”

His voice is quiet, soothing. It demands I take a deep breath and get out of my feelings.

“I’ve been reminded of how much of an art it is,” I say. “And that I can get by, but you—you have a gift.”

Rosy splotches bloom on his cheeks. “You know what you’re doing, too.”

“I don’t have the rhythm of it like you do. The innate… mastery, I guess. The relationship.”

Auden tilts his head and looks out the front window.

“What?” I ask. “He’s not coming back.”

“I know, but hearing the words rhythm and mastery and relationship when it comes to using a press... I'm looking for locusts, frogs, horsemen—any sign of the apocalypse.”

“Fuck off,” I mutter.

Rhythm, mastery.

When he repeats the words like that, I’m not thinking of cast iron machines—I’m thinking about sex.

I can’t believe he didn’t call me on how filthy that sounded.

He’s biting his lip, still a little pink in the face.

Okay, maybe he’s thinking it, at least.

“I could show you,” he says.

Meeting his gaze is like swimming in a lake, when you dive down, down on a bright day, and you have the dark depths below, and the streams of light from above, and it blends around you like you’re wearing a crown of green water and sunlight.

Holy fuck. He’s too much sometimes.

“Come here.” He crooks a finger for me to meet him at the Chandler and Price.

Definitely too much.

I join him anyway.

He takes my left hand and places it on the small shelf on the front of the press where we’d normally collect the cards during a run. The wood is smooth. And it would feel exactly like palming a flat piece of wood always does, except his big hand covers mine.

“Artisanry demands that relationship.” His voice is insanely low, but he’s only inches from me, so I don’t miss a syllable.

“I’m not an—”

“You have the artistic talent. You just need a little patience.” He puts his other hand on my right hip and positions me square to the press. He taps his toe against my heel, a silent command to put my foot on the treadle.

“We’re missing some parts.” Paper. Ink. The frame. Everything that actually turns into a product.

“We’re not making anything.” He’s at an angle to me. If he leaned forward three inches, his dick would be pressed into my hip. His left hand is still holding mine to the shelf. The other is a heavy weight just below my waist.

“I don’t understand,” I say.

“Just watch it, Carter.” He sounds amused. “You want to know every quirk. And not to try to learn when you’re rushing through eight jobs at once. When you have time to go easy.”

“Really.”

“Really,” he says. “Grip the wood with your other hand, too.”

Grip the wood? You’re fucking with me.”

“A little.” I can’t see his face from where he is behind me, but I hear his smirk.

A little? A lot. I grab hold of the shelf anyway.

“Just work the treadle,” he says.

I press my toe into the pedal, making the flywheel whir.

“And listen,” he says. “Watch.”

I do that, too.

I’ve been so damn busy since I got here—paper in, paper out, paper in, paper out—I haven’t actually watched anything I’ve done.

The rollers, mesmerizing as they glide over the circular, iron platen.

“What color’s the ink?” Auden’s hand tightens on my hip. His breath tickles the side of my neck.

There is no ink.

“Green,” I say. I can’t get that sunlit lake off my mind.

(I don’t want to. Ever.)

My tie… Why am I wearing something meant to restrict my airflow? I want to loosen it, but Auden told me to keep my hands on the shelf, so I’m keeping my hands on the goddamn shelf.

“Hear anything in the flywheel?” he says.

Just the whir and clicks and whuffs it normally makes. “Should I be?”

“Nothing unusual, but the more you know the sounds of it, the more you know exactly when to feed the paper.” He taps the top of my hand once. Twice. Again. Matching it up to some sensory memory that’s so ingrained in him, he probably dreams in that rhythm.

Anchored by his touch, I’m the one who leans in the three inches. My shoulder, touching his chest. His breath, much more than a tickle. A caress.

“It’s a pulse,” he murmurs, so gruff, the consonants and vowels mix together. His fingers brush the hollow above my shirt collar. My knees wobble.

“A pulse.” I tilt my head to the side, exposing my neck.

“Aye.” Bending his head, his lips land on the same sensitive spot.

My head’s turning faster than the flywheel.

“Auden.”

“See? You know the rhythm.”

Oh god, I don’t know anything right now.

MF - This Boy (This Boy #1) by Jenna Scott

Nothing in Camilla's life will be the same after This Boy...

Camilla dreams of the day she can leave her life behind. Saying goodbye to the mother she's never been good enough for, to the bottles there's always money for, to the bills there's never money for—and most of all, to being the help in someone else's dream home.

But the scholarship to her new private school that gives her a real chance at a future comes with one big catch—Hunter Beck.

It's his home her mother cleans. His little brother that Camilla babysits. It's his face that she dreams of at night, and his cruel voice that taunts her every day. Hunter is the most popular boy in school, and she's his favorite target. She hates him, but even more, she hates how drawn she is to him. Becoming his debate partner seems destined to end in disaster.

As she's drawn further into his world, he alternately pulls her close and pushes her away. But behind the roller coaster, Camilla senses true emotion. A man she wants to know hiding inside the boy.

She's so close to getting everything she wants. Getting into college. Leaving this town forever. She’s let nothing get in her way so far.

So why does it feel like Hunter Beck might be the boy who ruins it all?

Book One of Three

My Rating - 4 Stars!

This Boy is one of those books I probably enjoy more than I should. But, damn it, sometimes one just wants to fall into a world of anger and anger. This Jenna Scott book is just such a world.

I definitely enjoy this young adult book.

Mila and Hunter are a hot mess. With Mila and her mom working for Hunter's family, he certainly treats her like shit.

As the layers unfold, we learn that not only is Mila's life a mess, but so is Hunter's.

And together, the chemistry is explosiveness.

The good? Mila is wonderful. And I adore her relationship with Hunter's brother.

The bad? Omg. Pretty much every one else is a total jackass. Horrific parenting. Cheating. Alcoholism. Bullying. And more.

But it's the riveting kind of bad and I didn't want to put it down

This Boy is just the start of Mila and Hunter's story. I am excited to dive into the next book in this Jenna Scott series.

Two guys meet over a stack of romance novels. Soon they're turning pages late into the night...

Jamie Morin’s college GPA drops every time a cow breaks through a fence, but he’s determined to get his degree and keep his parents’ Vermont dairy farm afloat. He’d rather be reading than milking, but he can’t let his family down…not the way his brother did. So the last thing he needs is distraction in the form of an irresistible bookseller with a mysterious backstory.

Briar Nord has a lifetime of experience proving that happily-ever-afters only happen in his favorite books. But his luck might be changing. He’s got a great job at a bookstore, and he lives in a city that puts maple syrup on everything. But Briar knows not to trust anything or anyone. And that includes a gorgeous farm boy with soulful eyes and too many obligations.

When Jamie joins Briar’s romance novel book club, they both feel an instant connection. Soon they’re turning pages long into the night. But Briar’s past was bound to catch up with him. Sometimes, though, it takes two heroes to write a new ending . . .

My Rating - 5 Stars!

Booklover is a fabulous story by JE Birk. The sixth book in the Vino & Veritas multi-author series, this is a great addition to the small town Vermont fun.

Jamie and Briar meet at a book club at Vino & Veritas. Both men are hurting as they have complicated lives.

Jamie's family is draining him. They are all wonderful, and he loves them, but his responsibility to helping out at the family farm, leaves him losing his dreams. It's a large part of this story and it's so damn emotional. I just want to hold Jamie and help him.

How can he finish college, get his dream job, and still help out his parents? He can't. And that's the problem.

And then there's Briar. He loves his job at V&V, but his past comes knocking on his door and threatening all he has. How can he keep his past from ruining everything without actually ruining everything? And omg, when we learn his past, I was bawling.

I love these men. And I love their story. And best of all, I love the writing. I was drawn into this story at the start, and I was consumed throughout. Oh course, the light angst definitely had me turning the pages quickly to get to the happy ending.

Written in alternating first person pov, the men fully come to life. I felt every feeling, every emotion, every look, and every touch. And if you enjoy cute chapter titles, you will love these ones.

And then there's the setting. The Vermont aspect is well developed and is felt throughout. The mud. The farm. The maple syrup. The small town. The haunted library. All of it adds to the small town feel.

And oh how I love the book club and all it's members.

Booklover is a wonderful, feel good read. This JE Birk tale is beautiful, sweet, and tender. I can't recommend it enough.

I start heading toward the circle of couches and chairs near the back where the inaugural meeting of The Booklover Club is supposed to take place. I make a quick stop at a shelf of new titles because the store’s got at least three that I’ve been meaning to read. I grab one of them, a nonfiction book about dairy farming, and I take a quick pause to wonder if my wallet can handle a bookstore binge. I’m still reading the inside of the jacket flap when I hear a voice behind me.

“Can I help you?”

I turn around and try not to do that thing Jeremy says I sometimes do, where I just stand there staring at someone or something without speaking. In my defense, I think the problem comes from spending most of my childhood surrounded by cows. Sometimes I just forget how to people.

Especially when incredibly hot human beings are standing in front of me. Which is happening right now.

This guy looks exactly like Porter, one of my other favorite book characters. He’s in Alyssa Samuel’s gay romance novel Lost Key, and right now I can’t help but wonder if he walked right off the pages of that book and into this store. The Porter look-alike in front of me has sharp, angular cheekbones sitting under hazel eyes and dirty blond hair and eyebrows. He’s got some scruffy I-wanna-be-a-beard-but-I’m-not-there-yet hair around his chin that’s straight out of the Vermont tourist brochures. His head is covered by a pilling green tuque, and his skin is this olive tone that should be next to impossible for any white guy to have in Vermont in March. He’s wearing a flannel shirt and jeans, which is pretty much the stereotypical Vermont uniform, but somehow on him it manages to look cool and unique.

And as if all that weren’t enough? He’s carrying a stack of books.

Some men dream of seeing their perfect lover strutting around in hot lingerie or tiny speedos. I dream of my perfect lover naked, with a stack of books strategically placed in front of them.

Some people can’t wait to have babies. They’re ready for it—with their perfect lives and their pregnancy glow…

Poppy Adams doesn’t have a perfect life, and she wasn’t ready for the positive test. An unexpected baby—Poppy’s unexpected baby—won’t exactly have her family doing cartwheels. But she’s making the right choice.

Right?

Poppy’s totally got this. She just needs a little encouragement, and a knitting group is the perfect place to start. Baby blankets, booties, tiny little hats—small steps toward her new life. But she feels like she’s already dropped a stitch when she discovers the knitting group is led by the charismatic Rhiannon.

It’s not exactly a great time to meet the woman who might just be the love of her life. While the group easily shuffles around to make room for Poppy, it’s not so easy fitting her life and Rhiannon’s together. With the weeks counting down until her baby arrives, Poppy’s going to have to decide for herself what truly makes a family.

My Rating - 4 Stars!

Knit, Purl, a Baby and a Girl is an entertaining lesbian romance by Hettie Bell.

I found myself falling in love with this story at the start. But after that, at some point I stopped caring. I almost put it down. But luckily I kept reading and I became fully invested again. But the end, I really enjoyed this tale.

There's a lot going on in Poppy's life. She's pregnant, alone, and has some major family issues. Seriously, her mother is one hell of a pain in the ass.

Deciding to join a knitting group changes her life forever. I absolutely love and adore the way the knitting group becomes her circle of people. This group of individuals who have nothing in common but their craft, is perfectly written.

As well, Poopy meets and falls in love with Rhiannon.

The next nine months of Poppy's life is full of ups and downs, as well as a whole lot of character growth. Her relationships with everyone changes and then changes again. This is what is at the heart of this story. Poppy and the way she changes in her relationships with friends, family, and lovers.

Knit, Purl, a Baby and a Girl is a wonderful story in the end. Hettie Bell manages to capture the readers attention with a lot of charm and wit into this intriguing coming of age tale. The growth is Poppy's character has me happy to have discovered this book.
