My Rating - 5 Stars!

Michael Bailey's Looking Past is an extraordinary hurt/comfort romance. The third book in the Unconditional Series, it's easier to read in order, and it's a wonderful addition to this world.

Ben and Dylan meet through ugly and complicated  circumstances, but it isn't long before they start to connect. What follows is an amazingly poignant story.

It's a story of pain, hurt, guilt, and loss. Every bit of this story is based upon serious circumstances. Both men are broken in their own way and have a long road to recovery.

Theirs is a story of learning to move on from their pasts. A story of not letting the past define you, or shackle you. The author excels in bringing all the emotions out and illustrating the importance of letting go.

Their tale is all about family issues. Both men suffered a lot in their childhoods, with that shaping who they are now. Both men are survivors of being separated from their families. And both men still have a lot of family issues to deal with.

This is a long story, so be prepared to spend a while getting to know these men and their journeys. The writing style is impressive, with a great balance of dealing with past events and moving forward.

I love the men together. They are seriously fantastic. But more than anything, it's the way they ultimately help each other to heal that's the main draw here. With the addition of some twists and turns, some extra conflict is added, helping to ultimately cement the strength of their love.

I wish I could add a quote or two, but I will pass, since there are way too many that I love. The author adds so much wisdom into this story and I enjoy it all.

Looking Past is just that; a tale of looking beyond past events, of looking towards a future. Michael Bailey had me mesmerized with this heartfelt journey and I highly recommend it.

Gingerly, I raised my hand, softly knocking on Ben’s door. It opened, revealing a smiling Ben. “I was wondering how long you were going to stand there.”

“You knew I was here?”

He nodded toward the window. “Saw your car pull in a couple of minutes ago. Thought you might need a little bit of time.”

I’m not sure why, but he always seemed to surprise me. “I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was a little nervous. It’s been…well, a long time since I’ve been in a situation like this.”

“I am too,” Ben admitted. “But it’s a good kind of nervous.”

“There’s such a thing?”

Ben chuckled before saying, “Wanna come in? Or are you staying in the hallway all weekend?”

I glanced down at the thinly carpeted floor of the hall. “Well, the hall does look comfy.”

This time, he laughed. Grabbing my shoulder, he pulled, saying, “Get in here.”

I went willingly. He stepped to the side as I walked in. He turned to me the moment the door was closed and smiled. That smile alone was enough to begin to calm my nerves. But then, he stepped into my space, gently placing a hand on either side of my face, and leaned in. “You have nothing to be nervous about,” he whispered. “We go at your pace.”

Relief washed through me. Normally, I was the one who would act first and ask questions later. In this situation, though, I wanted to be sure we did everything the right way. Not jump into things. I certainly didn’t want a repeat of my last failed relationship. Ben seemed to sense that, and I was grateful for it.

I leaned forward, kissing him softly on the lips. I felt him smile against me, alleviating any further hesitation I may have had. I leaned in further, pressing my body against his, and wrapped my arms around his waist. “Thank you for inviting me.”

“Thank you for coming,” he answered, kissing me on the forehead.

I leaned my head against his chest, allowing the warmth of his body to envelope me. His arms tightened around me, gently holding me in place. The beat of his heart was a steady thrum in my ear, washing away any further anxiety I might have had. Everything about this felt right somehow.

So, I tried to get away with a simple, "Hi, I'm Michael."  But, nnnnoooo, that wasn't an option.  So here we go.

Before getting into M/M romance, I was a total nerd.  Sci-Fi, fantasy (not THAT.  Sword, sorcery, that kind of thing), comics, toys.  You name it, if it screamed dork, I probably did it.  I was a homodork, and proud.

In addition to that, I've dreamed of writing since I was eleven years old when I wrote a truly awful Choose-Your-Own-Adventure.  It sold exactly zero copies.  My mother may have a copy lying around somewhere.  Mothers keep that kind of thing.  I also wrote fantasy (Yes, THAT kind:  guy meets guy, they fall in love, have the white picket fence and live happily-ever-after)

I would walk into a book store and peruse all two shelves of their gay selection, and would always come away disappointed.  The books were depressing, nothing spoke to me about love and happiness.

Then I read one book.   I won't tell you what book, but it had two handsome men and a dog on the cover.   I read it in one sitting, and was hooked.  I fell in love with the M/M genre to moment I read that first sentence, and I have been in love with it since.

I am astounded at the limitless story potential within one genre.  You can literally do anything within the genre, from comedy to paranormal, mystery to sci-fi, fantasy to straight out romance, and everything in between.

Life took control, as it often does, and the dream of writing was put on hold.  Then, in November of 2016, I took a leap of faith, and began writing my first novel as part of the National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) competition.  The goal of the competition is to write a 50,000-word novel in a thirty-day period.

I failed.

However, on the advice of a friend, he “pushed through”. And so, in September of 2017, my first novel was be published.

I have always believed in the power of the written word, and the ability for one story to touch the reader in such a way that it can literally change the course of their life.  This one book opened up a world of possibilities for a middle-aged guy from Toledo, Ohio, and is what ultimately led me here.  And, I am happy to say, I never looked back.

Sweet Tooth by Helen Juliet

Getting lost in the woods was never this fun

When Hans Jager and his sister Greta have to return home for the holidays, the last thing he expects is to run into his childhood best friend, Chester Wild. Even more surprising is when Chester pretends to be Hans’s boyfriend to protect Hans from his wicked step-mother’s wrath. Seeing Chester again makes Hans realise that he might feel more than just friendship, but can he risking spoiling what they already have?
Chester has always loved his best friend. But Hans is straight, right? When they find themselves stranded in the woods, everything changes, but for how long? A dark family secret could undo their magical reunion, and Hans is feeling more lost than ever. Could Chester be enough to guide him back to true love?

Sweet Tooth is a steamy, standalone MM romance novel featuring a scrumptious sweet shop, slow dancing to Elton John, an explosive family dinner, a loyal puppy, a very naughty use for candy canes, and a guaranteed HEA with absolutely no cliffhanger.

My Rating - 4.5 Stars!

Helen Juliet's Sweet Tooth is a sweet friends to lovers holiday romance. This is a standalone read that is a modern retelling of Hansel and Gretel.

There is a whole lot of "cute" happening in this story. The town is named Gingerbread. The brother and sister are named Hans and Greta. And there's a candy shop, of course.

As for the candy cane scene, wow, just wow. That is definitely a different way to use a candy cane!

I love the emotions in this tale. The siblings left town, guilty of causing their mother's death. And, of course, their stepmother never misses an opportunity to remind them of that. They're back home now to say goodbye to their dying father. I can't praise enough the way this aspect of the story develops. I love it all.

As usual, the writing style is entertaining and wonderfully paced. The characters fully come to life and and their storyline is pure delight.

Sweet Tooth is a feel good holiday read. Helen Juliet will definitely leave you happy with this tale that perfectly combines friends to lovers and fake boyfriend themes.

I hate Sam Shelby. So why do I want to kiss him?

Sam never expected to move back to Cleveland.
Donovan never expected to be attracted to a man.
Well, shit happens.

After high school, Sam Shelby moved to New York. Eight years later, he returns to Cleveland and lands a job at the best ad firm in town. It would be the perfect gig, if his boss weren’t such an ass.

After his wife leaves, Donovan Cooper questions everything. The arrival of a young, arrogant, gifted graphic designer at Donovan’s firm is the last straw.

Tempers flare over office gossip, and following a nasty argument and scathing kiss, Donovan flails away from heterosexuality while Sam struggles to keep his “no relationship” rule intact.

Despite ugly socks, fiery fights, and their best intentions to not fall in love, these bullheaded coworkers can’t deny their chemistry. Donovan seeks happiness while Sam seeks success, but is there room for more?

__________________________________________________________________________

My Rating - 4.5 Stars!

Abstract Love is a delightful enemies to lovers romance, sort of. To me, this Sara Dobie Bauer read is more of two men getting off to a bad start together and their slow progression towards love.

When Sam and Donovan become co-workers, the sparks fly. Donovan is miserable with his life, as he's getting a divorce which has left him empty and gruff. Thus, he hates the energetic and arrogant Sam from the start. Yes, fun sparks!

Ohhhh...Sam. I love and adore the confidence Sam has. At times it's over the top, almost making me mad at him, but he has the game to back up his arrogance. His talent is well established and I love the way he discusses art.

Their story includes family issues, as Sam struggles as his long estranged father is dying. His parents are vile. And then there's Donovan's family issues, as his wife left him for his best friend. It's a tough road for both of them, but in the end, I love the way everything is resolved.

As for the relationship itself, these two men make for a great couple. They definitely have some strong chemistry and they bring out the best in one another. And oh, the opposites attract theme is strong with these two.

The author takes these two on a long journey. Sam has never wanted an actual relationship, creating problems with Donovan, as well as with his fling Jamie. His insistence on being independent and repeatedly pushing people away is almost his undoing. I love it all. The changes in both men are extraordinary by the end.

As for the sex, there's some sizzling sexual exploration with some great first times and plenty of emotion. If you enjoy first times, you'll love it all.

My favorite thing though is the way Sam sees Donovan; sees the real Donovan. Sam sees past Donovan's facade and pushes him to be happy, which he's never been. I adore this aspect of the tale. I love the way Donovan comes to grips with his submissive personality, and takes charge of his life for once.

Abstract Love is a compelling read. This Sara Dobie Bauer gem explores the importance of being happy, and going after what makes one happy. I truly enjoyed this book. It's a long, slow burn read, at almost 300 pages, but it's all fabulous. If you enjoy men who experience a large amount of character growth, don't miss this one.

Donovan sifted through a few hand-drawn logos on the desk and froze when he found a crudely drawn sketch of himself. Sam must have done it during a meeting at some point, capturing Donovan’s faux hawk, wide jaw, and severe expression.

Jesus, was this what other people saw when they looked at him? Did he really look so miserable?

“Make yourself at home?”

Donovan dropped the picture and stood straight at the sound of Sam’s voice.

He leaned against the doorframe, with one ankle crossed over the other.

“It’s really bullshit when people say that, you know?” Sam said. “Make yourself at home. No one actually wants their friends to take off their pants, drink all their beer, and binge The Great British Bake Off.” He paused. “What are you doing in my office?”

“I didn’t mean to snoop.”

The office door closed as he stepped inside. “Sure you did, or you wouldn’t be in here, so what’s up?”

Sam circled the desk, so Donovan circled the other way, although he noticed it was true what coworkers said: Sam did smell good—like clean laundry and cedar. “I think we started off on the wrong foot.”

Sam snort laughed and flipped through some files on his desk. “More like wrong continent, man.” When he found what he was looking for, he tapped the file’s corner against his palm. “I can handle guys like you, you know.”

Donovan shifted back on his heels. “Guys like me?”

“Hmm. Corporate assholes. All you see are dollar signs. You take no pleasure in your work. Advertising is money to you, not art, but without the artists, there wouldn’t be advertising, so…” He sucked his cheeks into his mouth, a momentary fish face.

Donovan wanted to tell him it wasn’t true. Donovan loved art.

He used to love art.

Sam continued, “I know I look like a six-foot-two Disney princess, but you’re not gonna rattle me.” To prove his point, Sam got right up in Donovan’s personal space until Donovan took a step back. Again, he was not used to dealing with someone his own height. “And I’m right about the Great Lakes ad campaign. If you’d pull your head out of your ass, maybe you’d notice.” He turned away abruptly.

“Sam.”

“What?”

“I’m sorry.” Ouch, that hurt coming out.

Sam’s rebuttal: “Prove it.”

“Excuse me?”

He rested a hand on the desk and cocked his hip out—the very picture of young attitude. “Listen to me in meetings.”

“I was listening.”

“Nope.” He shook his head and ran a hand through his unkempt, unprofessional hair. “No, you were hearing. I need you to listen. There’s a difference. And I know I’m just some fucking kid to you, but I ruled the New York City advertising scene. I know what I’m doing, Donovan, so let me do it.”

“Fine.” He’d had enough. He’d apologized, okay, so he’d done his Monica-enforced duty. He didn’t owe Sam anything else.

He didn’t run for the door, but he definitely moved with speed.

More Than Everything (Superbia Springs #2) by Rachel Kane

Amazon Link - Available in KU
Goodreads Link

Some things even a billionaire can't buy.

Dalton Raines always gets what he wants, and the first time he steps into Superbia Springs, he knows he wants to buy it. There's only one thing standing in his way: Noah.

For the first time in his life, Noah Turnstock felt safe, living with his friends in the old mansion they'd inherited. Finally he's in a place no one can take away from him.

Until the house catches Dalton's eye.

Dalton knows the way to get Noah on his side. He knows how to wine and dine a man like this, to get him so wrapped up he'll agree to anything. Except...he's never run into anyone like Noah before.

It was supposed to be seduction. Then it turned into something more.

When a visitor from Noah's past shows up, he realizes he will never be accepted into Dalton's life. And when Dalton's family meets Noah, their reaction could lose Dalton everything.

They can't have each other. They're from different worlds. But their hearts say otherwise. Their hearts say they can have everything they want.

My Rating - 4.5 Stars!

Rachel Kane's More Than Everything, the second book in the Superbia Springs series, is fantastic.

Damn! There is disgusting homophobia in this one, right from the start. I was livid and fully invested immediately. Honestly, this is small town life at it's finest, full of controlling townspeople and those who just want to be included.

This story revolves around a mansion and the fight for it's future. And what a complex fight it is. After meeting in opposition of the house's future, Dalton and Noah set upon a relationship of their own.

Not only are Dalton and Noah complete opposites, with vastly different backgrounds, the differences between Dalton and his brother are fabulous. And in the end, Dalton's talk to his brother about what he wants for his future struck me. It's extremely poignant and very touching.

As for the romance, it's definitely sweet and beautiful. The relationship between Dalton and Noah is fantastic. I enjoy the way it develops, as well as the way both men help one another in the end.

The character growth in this book is fantastic. Dalton is a man who has always allowed his family to push him around, and yet in the end, he finds himself. Seeing him discover his passions is wonderful.

The writing is excellent, with intriguing characters and some fabulous character growth. There are plenty of side characters who add to the story, and the hotel is it's own character, fully brought to life by the author.

More Than Everything is a wonderful addition to the Superbia Springs series. It's a wonderful journey towards finding love and a purpose in life. This Rachel Kane book, and series, is perfect for any fan of small town romances.

Review
My Rating - 5 Stars!

Life Happens on the Stairs is an impressive, complex young adult story by Amy J Markstahler.

Elsie's life is not going well. Her father is dying, her brother is on the outs with her family, and her mother is forcing her to work. Making things more complex, she ends up falling for the grandson of her employer. But in this forbidden romance, Tyler is relentless in his pursuit of Elsie.

This is a story of love between two opposites, in experiences and status. And it's a wonderful exploration that money does not equal happiness. It's a story that includes an attack and scars. There are crazy family members, family issues, and a whole lot of complications.

The writing is fabulous, the characters lovable, and the storyline riveting. The author excels in the telling of this romance that revolves around merging two different worlds. The author masters creating a villian that is vile, adding immensely to the tension and angst.

Life Happens on the Stairs is a stellar read. Just read it when you're looking for a meaningful coming of age novel. And when you learn the meaning of the title, you will be impressed beyond belief. It's perfect!

Review
My Rating - 4.5 Stars!

Irises in the Snow is a tender second chance romance novella by Isabelle Adler.

Justin and Elliot were high school sweethearts who were forced to part ways. Now, Justin finds an awkward surprise when he returns home for Christmas, allowing the two to reunite.

I adore second chance romances, and this one is a true gem. Justin and Elliot are super sweet together, and I could feel the little touches and quickened heartbeats.

The smooth writing style drew me in and I was happy with the continued pleasant tone. For a novella, it is well developed and I never felt something was lacking.

Irises in the Snow is a delightful, quick holiday read. It's super charming and perfect when you're looking for a short Christmas romance. It will definitely leave you satisfied.

The Rowel family home greeted Justin with familiar smells of cinnamon cake and fresh pine. In his mind, these scents had always been associated with the holiday season and long evenings spent around the dinner table or playing Scrabble in front of the fire. They were enough to ease some of the ache in Justin’s chest, softening his mood a tiny fraction.

“Justin!” His father clapped him on the shoulder and pulled him into a hug, which Justin carefully returned. “I’m glad you could finally make it.”

Despite the long remission, his father still appeared frail—or so it seemed to Justin, who, like most children, had grown up with the illusion his father was invincible until the universe proved him wrong.

“Of course,” Justin said. “You know me; I can’t say no to mom’s cooking.”

His father raised his eyebrow skeptically, undoubtedly recalling the string of last-minute cancellations and half-hearted excuses for not coming over in the last few weeks.

A familiar wave of guilt washed over Justin. With everything that had been going on, he knew he’d be hard-pressed to withstand his parents’ well-meaning inquiries into his personal life and into
the state of the family business, which had become Justin’s sole responsibility. He couldn’t bring himself to tell them just how badly both those things were going.

He cranked up his smile to a new level of dissimulation, but thankfully, his mother emerged from the kitchen before his dad could challenge his statement.

His mother wiped her hands on her apron and reached up to plant kisses on Justin’s cheeks.

“Everybody is already here,” she told Justin as she led him by the arm into the living room as if he’d forgotten the way. “I love it when the house is full.” Her tone was a touch wistful as she gave his arm a gentle squeeze before returning to the kitchen.

Justin supposed having them all together was a rare occurrence these days. He lived in a one-room apartment above their hardware store, and his sister Trish had recently moved in with her fiancé.
Nowadays, only the holidays presented an opportunity for Kelly Rowel to gather all of her loved ones, and, despite having to close the shop early on Monday to attend the day-before-Christmas-Eve family gathering, Justin was glad he could do something to make his mom happy. But as soon as he entered the brightly lit living room, he came to a screeching halt.

A fire already crackled merrily behind the grate. Huge red and white socks adorned with hand-embroidered names hung off the mantelpiece, decorated with a fake holly arrangement making its yearly appearance in the Rowel household. The TV showed a romantic comedy set in the
Swiss Alps, as far as Justin could tell at a cursory glance. His sister Trish, her fiancé Dave, and Aunt Marnie sat glued to the movie while Uncle Tony fiddled with his iPhone.

None of them, however, had the dubious honor of grabbing Justin’s attention. That belonged to the young man wearing trendy gold-rimmed glasses and the blandest Christmas sweater in existence,
sitting ramrod-straight in Dad’s old armchair and seemingly engrossed in Anne Hathaway’s foreign love affair.

No way. What was he doing here?

Justin didn’t know how long he stood in the doorway, transfixed, until his father, coming up behind him, gave him a slight nudge.

“Look who I have here!” he announced, and everybody, including the young man and Uncle Tony, raised their heads and turned his way.

“Hey, Justin!” Trish got up to meet him and give him a vigorous hug.

They sure were an affectionate lot, he thought absently as he hugged her back. Once, all that warmth was what kept him going. Now, it seemed almost…superfluous.

“Hi, Trish,” Justin said when she let up, and nodded to the rest. “Aunt Marnie, Uncle Tony, Dave. Elliot.”

“Oh, right.” Trish finally seemed to recall there was someone else present. “Mom invited Elliot to spend the holiday with us. You remember Elliot?”

Justin nodded curtly, unable to tear his eyes away from their guest. He definitely remembered Elliot Turner.

The man in question stood up, vacating his seat for Justin’s dad, and extended his hand in greeting.

“It’s nice to see you again,” he said.

Elliot’s voice was deeper, more mature than the last time Justin had spoken to him. Somehow, he seemed taller too. His gray eyes behind the shiny glasses regarded him seriously.

“Sure,” Justin said politely, shaking his hand. “It’s been a while.”

“Five years,” Elliot said.

“I was sorry to hear about your parents,” Justin said.

An awkward silence, accentuated by the chatter from the TV, settled around the living room at the mention of the tragedy. Trish and Aunt Marnie exchanged a nervous look. Really, did they expect Justin to just ignore what had happened?

When he’d heard of the terrible car accident last year, he tried calling Elliot in Los Angeles, but Elliot never picked up the phone or responded to Justin’s email in which he offered his condolences. That, above anything else, made it perfectly clear Justin was no longer welcome in his life.

So what was he doing back, standing in Justin’s parents’ living room?

“Thank you,” Elliot said gravely.

Suddenly, Justin was aware he was still holding Elliot’s hand and let it go, taking an involuntary step back. He wasn’t prepared for all the half-repressed memories dragged to the surface by Elliot’s
touch—and he certainly wasn’t prepared to deal with them in front of his notoriously meddlesome, if well-meaning, extended family.

Elliot stepped away as well, dropping his eyes. The sudden loss of contact felt like…well, a loss.

“Is Mark coming?” Trish asked, peering behind Justin’s shoulder as if expecting to find his boyfriend loitering in the corridor.

“No,” he said curtly.

“Oh, that’s too bad. Maybe he’ll join us tomorrow, then?”

“I don’t think so. How are your studies going?” he asked Trish, desperately trying to divert her focus elsewhere.

“I’m doing great. Passed all my midterms.”

“With flying colors,” Dave said.

He rose from his seat to shake Justin’s hand as Elliot stepped aside to make room for him and plopped back down, taking over half the couch in a casual sprawl. Dave was a big guy, tall and built like a quarterback. Trish was taller than Justin by an inch, and nearly as broad in the shoulders, but Dave made her seem petite in comparison.

“That’s terrific,” Justin said, his voice warming.

His plan of going to art school had gone up in flames and then slowly fizzled over the years as other considerations took precedence over the illusions of youth, but at least it hadn’t all been for nothing. With her athletics scholarship, Trish had been accepted to UIndy, and as long as she got to achieve that dream, he was happy to do anything he could to support her.

“I can’t believe you got even paler, though,” Trish said, casting a critical eye over him. “And thinner. Are you auditioning for the role of the Ghost of Christmas Past?”

“You’re the one to talk, Trish,” Aunt Marnie observed primly. “That’s the trouble with young people today. You can’t be bothered to take care of yourselves. Eating sandwiches in front of the TV
instead of sitting down for a proper meal, chugging all those soft drinks, always on your phones instead of having a nice long conversation over the dinner table.”

She glanced disapprovingly at Uncle Tony as she said it. Justin couldn’t tell whether her dissatisfaction stemmed from his being effectively absent from the proceedings, or that his preoccupation with his own mobile device undermined her point of it being the affliction of
solely the younger generation.

Justin rolled his eyes and caught a glimpse of Elliot doing the same. He pretended not to notice.

“Oh, shush, Marnie.” Justin’s dad, John, tsked in annoyance at his sister-in-law as he settled comfortably in his shabby armchair. “Leave the girl alone. The last thing she needs is your dieting
advice.”

“Just so you know, I eat healthier than all of you,” Trish said, sitting back down on the sofa beside her fiancé. Thankfully, she wasn’t ruffled by her aunt’s comment. Unlike Justin, she had always boasted a sunny disposition and staunchly refused to let bullies of any variety upset her. “And I drink nothing but fresh juice and water. Carbonated for special occasions.”

Dave snickered and petted her arm lovingly.

“Yes. Well. You must be tired, dear,” Aunt Marnie said, changing the subject and addressing Justin. “Why don’t you sit, put your feet up for a bit? Now, are you sure your young man isn’t coming?
I had such a nice chat with him when you brought him over for Thanksgiving. Did you know—”

“I’m sure,” Justin interrupted her. Elliot’s gaze was like a laser beam trained on him, but he refused to meet it head on. “Actually, I think I’ll go see if Mom needs any help in the kitchen.”

Justin beat a hasty retreat before they could all start bickering again—and before he had to explain his current heartache in front of the man who was the first to ever break it.
