Romantically Incorrect by Wendy Rathbone

Blurb

“If you were mine, I’d treat you like gold.”

How to avoid being romantically incorrect:

When your eyes meet his across a crowded room and your heart jolts to a stop, don’t mistake lust for love.

Never follow him to a public restroom to tell him how you feel.

Don’t stalk him online or to a trendy gay bar in L.A.

And do not give him advice on breaking up with his billionaire fiancée who treats him like crap.

Finally, do not offer your house as a haven when the press hounds him, or your arms for comfort when the pressure all around him breaks him into a hundred little pieces.

And, whatever you are hoping for, DO NOT let him model nude for a new art series you are painting.

Artist and model. They hardly know each other. They’ve never dated. But neither can stop craving the other.

Rescue. Hurt/comfort. Nude modeling. Insta-love. L.A. scene. Dealing with fame. Angry billionaire ex. No cheating. HEA.

My Rating - 5 Stars!

Romantically Incorrect is an emotional and riveting story by Wendy Rathbone.

Landyn, a former child actor, is a people pleaser and a pushover, but inside he's alone and miserable. A random meeting with Chance leads him to find someone who's finally looking out for his best. Chance is forward and doesn't hide his feelings about Landyn, leading to some great moments.

The two have a strong, intense connection. I love their story and the way their relationship progresses.

As for Landyn's ex, oh boy, he's a peach of a man. He's a jerk, pompous ass, and total troublemaker. He certainly adds to the storyline, increasing the suspense factor.

This is a story of finding someone who see the real you, who accepts and supports the real you. Their story has a little bit of heat and a whole lot of semi-serious moments. It's all well done and my attention never strayed.

Romantically Incorrect is a tough read at times with some serious stalking. I definitely like the writing style and will be adding this Wendy Rathbone book to my re-read list.

Piñatas and Paintbrushes (Hearts of Snow Lake Book 3) by Ashton Cade

Blurb

Sebastian:

He’s a shining star, I’m a black hole. Complete opposites. And just like our astronomic counterparts, there’s no way Marty’s light is ever going to brighten me. Black holes don’t let any light escape. They devour it all. And that’s what will happen to Marty if he doesn’t keep his distance from me. I want to warn him, but there’s a selfish part of me that can’t do it.

Like a moth, I’m drawn to Marty’s light. I know I should stay away—for his sake more than mine—but I can’t. A better man would do the hard thing and stay away. Not me. The fact that this time the easy way lines up with my self-centered desire to spend more time with him, is only a bonus.

He doesn’t know that I’ve already declared this over in my head. He thinks he does, but he's lying to himself. Part of me resists it as well, though. Part of me is determined to give this a real go and not lose my chance with him. Because if I back out now and regret it later, it could be too late.

Which is worse? Missing my chance, or opening myself up to the agony I already know so intimately?

Marty:

Me: I know what I’m doing, and I know Sam’s not after anything serious. It’s fine. I can handle it.
Narrator: He could not handle it.

Some folks say I live in a dreamworld. It's partly true; I run a party planning business in the idyllic town of Snow Lake and I love every minute of it. But when I watch my friends partner up and look so happy, I hide the sadness that threatens to engulf me. Nobody needs to know how deep that particular pit goes.

When Sebastian arrives in Snow Lake, I bring him a welcome basket, like I do for everyone. But when I actually take in that tall, muscular frame and dark artist's mystique, I practically want to organize a parade complete with marching band and an interpretive dance about how much he turns me on.

So what if he says he only wants a casual thing? A hookup is better than not getting my hands on that body. And besides, how can he not fall in love with me?

I'm charming. I deserve love. Right?

I am in love with Ashton Cade's Hearts of Snow Lake series. The third book, Pinatas and Paintbrushes, is a fantastic addition.

In this story, a grieving and troubled artist meet a small town man, who happens to be the life of the party. The small town feel is well written, easily transporting the reader to this place.

As for the men, both are interesting and complex characters. Sebastian is lost in a world of pain, grief, and guilt. Then Marty shows up and is like a breath of fresh air. These two men are complete opposites, and it's entertaining to see the differences not getting in their way.

They have to deal with homophobia and sabotage, in addition to a painful past, and the fear of pain and agony.

Pinatas and Paintbrushes is a story of recovery and healing. This Ashton Cade book is a beautiful story of accepting that you deserve to live a full and happy life. I loved every second of it.

Paint It Black (Beneath the Stain #2) by Amy Lane

Blurb

Everybody thinks Mackey Sanders’s Outbreak Monkey is the last coming of Rock ’n’ Roll Jesus, but Cheever Sanders can’t wait to make a name for himself where nobody expects him to fill his famous brothers’ shoes. He’s tired of living in their shadow.

Blake Manning has been one of Outbreak Monkey’s lead guitarists for ten years. He got this gig on luck and love, not talent. So hearing that Cheever is blowing through Outbreak Monkey’s hard-earned money in an epic stretch of partying pisses him off.

Blake shows up at Cheever’s nonstop orgy to enforce some rules, but instead of a jaded punk, he finds a lost boy as talented at painting as Mackey is at song-making, and terrified to let anybody see the real him. Childhood abuse and a suicide attempt left Cheever on the edge of survival—a place Blake knows all too well.

Both men have to make peace with being second banana in the public eye. Can they find the magic of coming absolute first with each other?

Paint It Black is a fantastic romance by Amy Lane. The second in the Beneath the Stain series, it's a great follow up to Beneath the Stain.

The story of Cheever and Blake, both men have been through hell. They have a strong friendship that helps save them, eventually leading to more. Cheever is Mackey's younger brother who's lost and broken. He's a talented young man, but he's killing himself with drugs and sex. With Blake's help, Cheever's able to heal, although it's a long rode to happiness.

Cheever and Blake are two men who both struggle with self confidence issues.
Cheever's always been the "other" kid, the younger brother of successful rockers. His is a life of feeling inferior, resentful, and disposable. He's always longed to be seen by someone.

Blake's a member of the band, who's struggled with his own demons. He's always wanted someone to love and care for him. His relationship with Cheever provides tremendous peace, love, and happiness to each man. And, holy crap, I got all the feels when Cheever calls Blake "baby boy!"

Of course, there's an age gap between Cheever and his brother's friend Blake. This aspect is well done, with a lot of consideration and issues.

Their story is one of resentment, fear, anger, and hatred. The author delves into the world of rockers and bands, as we get to follow more of Outbreak Monkey's adventures.

Paint It Black is a heavy, complex read, which is superb. I highly recommend this Amy Lane book when you're looking for a comfort/hurt romance.

Matt is sexy, single, and fabulous. His career at a fancy magazine is going from strength to strength. He has great friends, a nice flat, and a healthy bank account. Life is wonderful.

In truth, Matt is unhappy. Convinced he’s not worthy of love, he flits from club to bar, in search of temporary amnesia from the demon on his shoulder that tells him he’s never going to find “the one”. Which is ironic, because his heart already belongs to the one man he knows he can never have—his straight best friend, Zeke.

Zeke has always dated women. He can’t fathom why he’s so upset about Matt’s latest lover, the wildly successful and attractive Dieter, but refuses to accept that he’s jealous, because to do that, he might have to do some soul-searching of his own.

Meeting Dieter turns Matt’s ordered life on its head, and opens Matt’s mind to the possibility that he can make a meaningful connection. However, to take a gamble on love, Matt has to learn to trust people with his secrets. And, more importantly, to overcome his shame regarding the one part of him he refuses to change. If he can’t – or won’t – learn to love himself, it’s doubtful anyone else will see the real man behind the mask.

The only question is whether he’s brave enough.

REVIEW
My Rating - 5  Stars!

Unwrapping His Heart is one of those precious books that is so wonderful that I found myself looking for more books by the author while I was still reading it. Unfortunately, this is Karrie George's debut novel. So, now I will be not-so-patiently waiting for her next one!

This book is exquisite, as we follow Matt on his journey towards embracing his true self, and finding love. Along the way, we are able to fully feel and experience emotion and action along with Matt, as we are completely taken into his world.

Matt's been in love with his roommate, and straight best friend, Zeke for years. Zeke, the only one who knows Matt's secret, fully supports his friend and wants his friend to find someone who can except all of him, his secret and all. Zeke is definitely a great friend, even if he turns Matt down anytime Matt hits on him.

After being hired by Dieter, Matt originally fights the attraction he has to this new and eccentric man, since getting involved with anyone would mean he'd have to reveal his secret. Dieter is an interesting character. He's rich, he's bisexual, and he is very matter of fact about his attraction towards Matt. At the beginning, I found their relationship to be very mechanical, without a lot of build up or feelings. In the end, this makes perfect sense and it was exactly what Matt needed.

You can't help but to route for Matt to find love, and to learn to love himself. He has endured a lot of hardships in his life, and has not only survived, but has far exceeded anyone's expectations. It's inspiring to see a character do whatever is necessary to rise above everything he's faced, as well as to help others.

This story is extremely multi-layered, and will take you on some unexpected paths. The characters are well developed, and are all wonderful in their own unique ways. Each man fully contributes to one another's growth as a person. That said, this is not a menage, but rather a long and winding road towards finding true love.

Unwrapping His Heart contains secrets, complications, jealousy, family abuse, homeless flashbacks, and more. It follows a character who is confused, and in turmoil over coming out, as well as having gay sex. Karrie George has far exceeded any of my expectations, as I am left feeling like I am a better person for having read this book.

Excerpt

The hairs on the back of his neck lifted; he was coming closer. The thick carpet muffled his steps, but Matt’s internal compass had apparently shifted and now only had one direction.

Sørensen didn’t speak as he approached, and Matt didn’t move from his position, concentrating furiously on a Porsche as it made several attempts to parallel park. Then his breathing hitched as a hand landed on his shoulder.

“I think you should call me Dieter.”

“Okay.” It was an effort to force the two syllables out. Still neither of them moved. The air between them crackled and Matt swallowed. He wasn’t imagining it now; Sørensen - Dieter- was interested. He raised his eyes a fraction and risked checking the reflection in the glass. Before he could process anything, he was suddenly moving, then his back was pressed against the window as a mouth came down on his and his vision blurred.

Dieter kissed without mercy, his lips hot and hard and insistent. Matt barely had time to register that he tasted of mint before a tongue demanded entry, forcing rather than coaxing, and any resistance he might have summoned crumbled under the assault. He moaned and his head fell back, at the same time as his hands rose to grip the lapels of Dieter’s suit jacket to tug him closer.

A hand grasped the back of his head and strong fingers raked through his hair. Matt responded by sliding his arms under Dieter’s jacket and clawing at the fine material of his shirt, desperate to find skin. Pulling back suddenly, Dieter tore off the offending jacket, letting it drop to the floor, then did the same with Matt’s leather one, before mashing their mouths together once more. He ground into Matt, every roll of his hips sparking nerve endings that screamed for release as the pressure grew.

Matt didn’t usually kiss much. Frantic gropes in the dark corners of clubs didn’t lend themselves to more than getting off as quickly as possible, and he wasn’t yet sure he was in the market for romance, but something about the way Dieter tried to consume him was addictive. He couldn’t get enough. Air wasn’t necessary; getting moreof everything, was. He realised he’d moaned again, and the noise evidently pleased Dieter. “Let me get you off,” he murmured, “are you close?”

Matt was close, tooclose. He turned his head suddenly, smacking it against the cool glass. Releasing his hold on Dieter, he pressed the heel of one hand against his groin, then used the other as a shield, palm up against Dieter’s chest. He could feel the galloping heartbeat under his fingers and the thought that Dieter was similarly affected pleased him.

“Gissa moment,” he choked out, willing his erection to subside enough to allow him to think.

To his credit Dieter didn’t crowd him, but his eyes were puzzled. “You don’t want to come?”

Matt laughed, a small, pained sound. “Yeah, but not in my clothes.”

Dieter smiled. “We can rectify that simply. But I think perhaps we are the same size. It would have been no trouble to lend you something. Come to bed with me, Matt.” He tipped forward and pressed their foreheads together gently, a direct contrast to his previous full-on attack. “You do want to?”

“Fuck, yeah. But not tonight.”

“Because?”

Because if we do that, you’ll think I’m a fucking weirdo and ditch me before we get as far as the bed. “You took me by surprise. Also, it’s not very professional if I’m going to be working for you.”

About the Author

Karrie George considers caffeine the most important food group. She’d like to think of herself as delightfully eccentric, but has grudgingly accepted that “socially awkward weirdo” is nearer the mark. Books and music have been the backdrop to her life so far, and she sees no reason for this to ever change. Karrie lives in the wilds of Scotland with a long-suffering spouse and several children. The voices in her head are great at encouraging her to leave the dust bunnies in favour of playing with plot bunnies. Possibly unrelated, she owns a number of pristine dusters.

The Colors Between Us by Kate Hawthorne

Wow. The Color Between Us grabbed my interest on page one and never let it go. Every single second of this book is just amazing.

Be warned. This is not your normal romance. This involves a deeply broken man and it is not an easy read.

Roland is a famous painter, but he is broken. He can't paint and he is spiraling out of control. He spends his days drinking vodka and doing not much else.

Donny is annoyed by Roland when they meet. He is pissed at him for the way he is living his life. And he is attracted to Roland. Absolutely attracted to him. But he makes it his passion to dominate Roland and help him heal.

Roland is so damn stubborn, as well an extremely complicated.  And Donny is far more patient than almost anyone would ever be. But, together, they just might be able to help Roland live again, and to help Donny find his true artistic talent. And love. If they work hard enough for it.

One thing that is tough for me is Donny's desire to try to help and stay. It is hard to understand exactly why he would do so. It is obviously essential to the story, but it is hard for me to relate to why he would do so.

Honestly, The Colors Between Us is a remarkable book. The author does a fantastic and realistic job of painting depression and how it can affect one's relationships, work and life. It is not an easy read, but it is a great read. The difficult times in this book are at the true heart of this story. Thus, despite being tough to read, it is a fantastic journey and well worth doing do. And, along the way you will experience great passion, great sadness and a larger than life love story.
