RELEASE BLITZ, EXCERPT & REVIEW - MF - A Brit Player (Castle Calder #4) by Brenda St. John Brown

Title: A Brit Player
Series: Castle Calder #4
Author: Brenda St John Brown
Genre: Second Chance Sports Romance
Release Date: June 23, 2021

Whoever said taking a second chance on your first love was a good idea obviously had nothing to hide…

They say the best way to get over someone is to get under someone else. But shagging a guy with a “Bad Decision” tattoo is never a good idea. It’s a warning label. Trust me.

So when a friend coerces me into taking part in a charity dating auction, I jump at the chance to leave London - and my bad decisions - behind for a weekend.

But Max Foster is there and he’s bidding on me like it’s his job. Max isn’t just a guy. He’s THE GUY - my first love who I haven’t seen since the day he left high school to go play professional football in Spain.

I shouldn’t see him again, never mind want to. Because letting him find out about the secret I’ve kept from him these past twelve years? That has “bad decision” written all over it.

**This book contains content that readers who have experienced loss of pregnancy may find upsetting.**

My Rating - 4.5  Stars!

A Brit Player is the fourth book in the Castle Calder series by Brenda St John Brown. I haven't read the previous books and found this to easily be read as a standalone.

I love sports romances, so this one has a lot going for it as far as I'm concerned. Sometimes I just need to drown in athletes falling in love. And this one definitely allowed me to do just that.

Tara and Max make for a fun couple. They have great chemistry and their relationship kept me entertained with fun banter and one liners.

They have a messy past for sure, but the connection between them is easily reestablished when they are reunited. I enjoy the way they easily fall back into their old ways.

That said, the reader is fully aware that something messy happened in their pasts, with the anticipated complications looming throughout.

Their tale is full of heartache, hot sex, and intense longing. They are perfect together if they can just deal with the obstacles in their way.

Written with alternating between the past and the present, the author slowly brings the reader up to date about their complicated past. It all flows well and is easy to follow. I appreciate the way this is written and wouldn't change a thing.

A Brit Player is a great second chance romance. I am definitely interested in reading the other books in this Brenda St John Brown series.

I could never resist that bloody smile and it’s what gets me to glance up now. I immediately wish I didn’t because Max Foster is more handsome now than he was when we were sixteen. His skin is tan and golden, and his light brown hair has blonde streaks through it that make him look like a surfer dude. On anyone else I’d assume they were compliments of some serious salon time, but I know Max well enough to know that they’re one hundred percent natural. I also know Max well enough to know that the way he’s shoving his fingers through said hair means he’s not as unaffected by our unexpected meeting as his body language would have me believe.
Thank God.
The realization buoys me enough to slow my heart rate down to this side of frantic and I manage a nod, saying, “I’m sure he’ll appreciate that.”
“Are you going to introduce us to your friend, Tara?” Scarlett asks.
It’s a testament to Max Foster’s force field that I’ve completely forgotten Scarlett and what’s-her-name.
It’s also a testament to Max Foster’s force field that he extends his hand before I get a chance to speak and introduces himself to both Scarlett and Tilly, whose name comes back to me the minute she says it.
“You look familiar?” Scarlett says. “Do we know each other somehow?”
“I don’t think so,” Max says, though he peers at Scarlett more closely, like he’s trying to make sure. “Tara and I went to high school together back in the day.”
“Hmmm.” Scarlett’s brow furrows. “Well, Tara and I were in sixth form together back in the day. Were you…?”
“Max got recruited to play professional football in Spain right out of high school.” My words come out fast and flat.
“And Tara never forgave me for actually going.” Max’s smile is easy, but I know his deep brown eyes don’t miss my flinch at his words. Him going to Spain is the least of what I’ve held against him.
“Who do you play for now?” asks Tilly.
“I’m at Norcastle,” Max says.
“Oooh. Impressive, but that Champions League title is useless here. You’re in Manchester territory now,” Tilly says.
Max laughs and they joke back and forth, giving me a chance to observe him on the down low. Or at least I think it’s on the down low until he turns to me and says, “I can’t believe you’re here. We need to catch up. Are you free for dinner tonight?”
No. I definitely am not free. Even if I had an empty diary from now until 2050, I’m not free for dinner with Max Foster. But before I can reply, Scarlett interjects, “Tara’s actually one of the dates in today’s auction, so she’s probably booked tonight unless you want to pay to play.”
I turn to Scarlett, eyes wide. “I don’t think Max is here to bid.”
“On the contrary. I think I just became a lot more likely to bid,” Max says with a grin. “It’s all for a good cause, right?”
“Well, there you go. A little motivation is good for everyone.” Scarlett gives a little grin. “It is for a very good cause. Save the Family provides accommodations to families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. They also provide counseling and mentoring services. A lot of the families involved would either have their children taken into care or be living on the street full stop.”
I steal a glance at Max and he’s nodding in agreement as he asks, “Is it a local organization? Or do they work nationally, as well?”
“It’s based in Windermere. My mum has been involved with them for ages, which is why we’re hosting the auction.” Scarlett looks around, holding her hands out like Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music. “You’ve got to admit, it’s an ace venue.”
“It is, indeed.” Max smiles back at Scarlett and then nods. “I should probably go check on Harris to make sure he’s not got cold feet. I’ll see you out there, T.”
Then he walks away like the last time we saw each other wasn’t twelve years ago.
I turn to Scarlett and hiss, “What are you doing? I don’t want him to bid on me.”
“Uh, no kidding?” says Scarlett, her voice low. “But based on the way your tongue was hanging out of your mouth when you looked at him, that’s exactly why he should.”
“My tongue was not hanging out of my mouth.” Was it? Fucking hell, it could have been. It always did where Max was concerned.
“What’s the deal with you two, anyway?” Scarlett says as she waves at Bradley and turns toward our front-row seats.
“Right?” adds Tilly. “The way you were looking at him…”
“You dated Tom for over a year and I never saw you look at him that way,” Scarlett says, raising an eyebrow. “Just saying.”
That’s because I never looked at Tom that way. I’ve never looked at anyone that way except Max Foster.
If I can help it, I’ll never look at anyone that way again.
Especially Max Foster.

Brenda is a displaced New Yorker living in the English countryside. She’s lived in the UK long enough to gain dual citizenship, but still doesn’t understand Celsius. However, she has learned the appropriate use of the word “pants”. And how to order a proper bacon bap/barm/buttie. Because, well, bacon.

Brenda writes contemporary romance to make you giggle and swoon. When she’s not writing, she enjoys hiking, running and reading. In theory, she also enjoys cooking, but it’s more that she enjoys eating and, try as she might, she can’t live on Doritos alone.

My Rating - 4.5 Stars!

Leo is the third book in the Bar 28 series by JJ Harper. And damn, this ended up being so much deeper than I was expecting.

There are some serious issues addressed, making for an emotional read. I'm highly impressed with the author's ability to balance the serious with the light-hearted. There are plenty of sweet and sexy moments to keep everything balanced.

Before they ever met in person, Bruno and Leo start an online friendship, which involves some wonderful interactions.

Later, when they end up meeting in real life, they don't know they already know one another. It's cute seeing them deal with their suspicions and trying to navigate a few obstacles.

Bruno's a model whose dealing with some career decisions and a pushy agent. Leo's a bartender who immediately hits it off with the handsome model.

I love the men together. Obviously they are meant to be together. They mesh well and certainly are head over heels for each other. Their story isn't all easy, but I love seeing them end up together.

Their story includes a slew of interesting facts, which is adorable and entertaining.

Both characters are multi-layered and have a difficult past, making both sympathetic characters. The author illustrates some of the modeling industry's problems, as well as exploring the effects of being in an abusive relationship. Add in some other issues, and damn, you just want to save both these men from their pasts. I am still in awe of Leo and all he's survived.

Written in alternating first person pov, the characters are wonderfully developed and the storyline is great.

Leo is definitely a great choice the next time you're in the mood for a hurt/comfort read. This JJ Harper will definitely leave you impressed.

His Horizon (His #1) by Con Riley

Amazon Link   - Available in KU

Temperatures rise when there are two cooks in Jude’s kitchen...

Jude’s drowning in guilt when he can’t save his family business single-handed. The last person he expects to throw a lifeline is Rob, a rival chef who once beat him to first place in a cooking contest.

Two chefs working together won’t be easy. Not when Rob is everything Jude isn’t—popular, extroverted, and a one-time hook-up. What’s worse is that Rob wears his heart on his sleeve while Jude’s still in the closet.

Jude’s dilemma doesn’t end there. Rob’s rescue package comes with conditions that mean sharing everything from the profits to Jude’s sleeping quarters. Sleeping with the enemy will either be a disaster or signal a much brighter future, but only if Jude can meet Rob’s final condition and love him in the open.

Featuring opposites who attract, rivals to lovers, and an out-for-you storyline dripping with hurt-comfort feelings, His Horizon is the first in a shared-world series of standalone MM romance novels from Con Riley.

My Rating - 4.5 Stars!

His Horizon is a wonderful book by Con Riley. I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of the storyline.

Rob and Jude are two cooks who were once competitors, yet are now business partners. Upon being reunited, they are also exploring their continued attraction to one another.

Jude's story is depressing from the start. He's back home to help his sister, having given up hope of finding his parents alive. What he finds is a struggling business and an awkward situation with Rob being in town.

Jude and Rob have a past that consists of one kiss. But the attraction is there and their connection is strong. Their slow burn romance is full of tension, need, and want. There's heat, a sprinkling of humor, and plenty of emotion.

The whole story revolves around Jude's parents being lost at sea. It's heartbreaking throughout, including Jude's issues with being closeted and having never come out to his parents. In general, Jude is weighed down by guilt, grief, and a whole lot of frustration. He's living with expectations, fears, and confusion.

The characters fully come to life in this British romance. It's a beautiful story of regrets, secrets, and acceptance. There's a family secret that comes to light, as well as some good twists and turns. In addition, there's a good mystery.

There's a whole lot to love about this tender, heart-felt read. The writing is beautiful, although definitely more descriptive than I normally prefer. The author excels in writing with a poetic feel, yet never overwhelming me. Written in alternating 3rd person pov, the reader is able to fully understand each man and their emotions.

His Horizon is wonderful in the end. I adore this heart warming second chance romance. I am excited for more in this Con Riley series.

Setting a New Course (Navigation Quartet #2) by Chris Cheek

Amazon Link - Available in KU

“David was contemplating the wreck of his home life and his career. He realised with sickening clarity exactly how much this meant. He was going to lose everything he had taken for granted for the last few years – friends and acquaintances, his parents and siblings, the routine of life at the depot, the house he and Mona had shared for the last five years, his marriage and his kids.”

After being best friends from the age of nine, David and Alan had not seen each other for six years after Alan had left their home town in Yorkshire for a life in London. Then, one February day, they met up by accident when Alan got on the bus that David was driving. Having reconnected immediately, the true depth of their feelings became clear despite the fact that David was now married with two kids. After David started a new job driving an express service to London, the two twenty-five year olds began an affair – the course of which was the subject of the first book in this series, Veering off Course.

Setting a New Course opens with the aftermath of David facing a major crisis on one cataclysmic August night. It’s a difficult time as he tries to come to terms with a new life in London with Alan, his feelings of guilt about his marriage and his fears for the future of his two sons, whom he misses terribly.

David is brought almost to his knees when the problems he is facing are compounded by the actions of a vengeful wife. Is his relationship with Alan strong enough to withstand the strain Of these events? Can he reach an agreement with his wife about the future of the kids? And is his father willing to heal the breach that has developed between them?

At a moment of crisis, intervention from an unexpected source helps to reduce the emotional temperature. Can calm reflection lead to a new course being set for Alan and David?

My Rating - 4.5 Stars!

Wow! Setting a New Course is a riveting romance by Chris Cheek. The second book in the Navigation Quartet by Chris Cheek, it's picks up where  Veering off Course leaves off. That said, it's actually easily read as a standalone, as the past events are summed up well.

David and Alan's relationship began when they were kids. They were best friends. Until life took them down different paths.

Now they are together, as boyfriends. Unfortunately, David's wife wasn't so happy about this.

Their story is one of two different lives lived. The one David picked. And the one he is now choosing.

I have a lot to say about this book. First of all, don't get caught up on the cheating. Yes, there is cheating, as David was cheating on his wife. But, it's the age old tale of being closeted and choosing the easier route in life. He thought he loved his wife, and it wasn't until seeing Alan again, that he knew he wasn't happy.

Second, I have to address the author's writing style. I originally didn't read Veering off Course because of the unique style. I plan to change that though, as I need to know how things went down when they met up again. But, seriously, the writing style is not my typical taste. Everything is written in a more posh and proper manner; both the style and the language used. You could easily change a few things up and have it be a historical romance.

But, on the first page, David's plight caught my attention. I am thrilled to have read this book. His journey is nothing unique and my heart hurts for him throughout.

There's plenty of pain throughout David's journey. He has to deal with his angry soon to be ex wife and the fight to see his children. There's plenty of homophobia surrounding him, most of it caused by his wife and mother in law.

The men have their share of problems as a couple too. Both external and internal. There's no doubt they're in love. These men are damaged and luckily they make one another better. They fight through their fears and frustrations, mistakes and miscommunications. They will have a happy ending, so fear not.

One of the most beautiful themes of this tale is that of friendship. The author wonderfully explores the importance of being in a gay community and the automatic understanding that comes within the community. I love this.

As well, the author takes us on David's journey of feeling inferior to his London crowd. David is "just" a bus driver and feels he doesn't fit in with the arts crowd or the businessman crowd. The sad part is that David loves being a bus driver. It's heartbreaking to see the automatic stigma he feels from it when in a more sophisticated crowd. I wanted to cry for him. But, in the end, the author takes him on a beautiful journey towards self worth.

Overall, Setting a New Course is well worth a read. I love every second of this Chris Cheek storyline. These men and their journey had me captivated throughout.

If you've ever had a steamy one-night stand with a British football player and then find yourself pregnant with his baby, you know how Lia Ward feels.

To be fair, Lia didn't know who Jude McAllister was when they met.

Studying abroad for her master's program, all she knows is that she's a little lonely and he's very charming, even as they have an epically sexy argument about which type of football is superior.

In Jude's mind, shagging the feisty American girl is exactly what he needs. He’s been fighting the clock of his long-standing football career and the younger players primed to take his position. Proving that he can feel like his old self again—something he's been trying to do with everyone in his life—should be easier after blowing off steam with Lia.

But oh baby, when a plus sign pops up on Lia's pregnancy test, that 'one night' becomes a whole lot more.

Now Lia and Jude have to navigate their impossible-to-ignore chemistry, and prepare for the parenting game, something neither of them know how to play.

My Rating - 4.5 Stars!

Floored is a study abroad romance by Karla Sorensen. The third book in the Ward Brothers series, it's easily read as a standalone. However, reading the series in order definitely adds to the fun.

As far as I'm concerned, Lia's living the dream. Studying in England for a semester and meeting a hot athlete. Swoon. Course the dream doesn't involve a surprise pregnancy.

It's a great story, but it took me a little bit to appreciate the characters fully. And, damn, let's just say that Jude's parents are awful. Add in Lia's family history and cue the tears.

I like that the two work together and never have that big initial fall out due to those two pink lines. It's a nice twist on the typical surprise pregnancy storyline. Of course, there's conflict later on, and I love the way it's done. It's actually a development I appreciate and it never gets cheesy.

It's a tale of pregnancy and the upcoming life changes that one needs to deal with. It's a tale of figuring out their family issues, as well as distance issues. It's also a tale that explores opening up to others and letting people in.

The writing is wonderful, with everything flowing well and the storyline keeping me intrigued throughout. My only complaint is that I wanted more. I wanted to see some of their daily lives, both surrounding school and his work. But of course, that would have been a whole different story. lol

Overall, Floored is a good read. It's a nice NA read that explores finding one's place in life, as Lia struggles to figure out where she belongs, as she deals with the changes in her life. If you've been reading the series all along, you'll love this addition to the series.

"All the English countryside stars for this awesomeness. It’s getting one of my rare 6 stars...  I’ve read over 400 books this year and have only given 8 x 6 stars so that tells you just how much I loved this book!!" - Claypot Reads
"Karla Sorensen nailed the angsty and steamy feels once again in Floored. This unique sports romance was full of intense emotions and all consuming romance goodness. She never fails to bring out the best and the worst in me with her brilliant writing." (PP’s Bookshelf)
“Karla Sorensen delivers on all the things I love the best: the chemistry, the banter, the sweet steady burn that holds my heart in thrall and keeps my greedy little reader heart hungry for more. Floored delivered on all those things and more!” (Jennifer, Goodreads Review)

Well, let’s see ... I’m a wife and a mother. If the things that I write bring a smile to someone's face, then I've done my job. I am obsessed with Outlander (both the books and the show). I’m almost exclusively a romance reader, which means some people will never consider me a literary snob. If I could meet one historical figure, it would be Jane Austen. I received my Bachelors in Public Relations and worked in health care marketing before I had my babies. I hate Twitter. I do it, but I hate it. Also, if you want to get on my good side, bring me wine and I'll love you forever.
