RELEASE BLITZ, EXCERPT & REVIEW - MF - Heartwood (Speakeasy Taproom #2) by J.H. Croix

HEARTWOOD BY J.H.CROIX

Release Date: June 29, 2021

Cover Design: Elle Maxwell Designs

She needs a fresh start. He wants a second chance…

My new job as a chef in a small town was supposed to be my ticket to peace and quiet. I didn’t expect to run into the former hockey star who gave me the hottest nights of my life. And, oops, he’s sort-of my new boss. So much for keeping my past where it belongs.

Ty still thinks I’m the fun party girl. He has no idea how much things have changed. One thing that hasn’t changed: the spark between us. It’s hotter than the blowtorch I use on my crème brûlée.

I’m already keeping secrets, so what’s one more? Our tryst is forbidden, it’s fun, and it gets complicated as fast as you can say “check, please.” I didn’t expect to have a future with Ty. And I definitely didn’t expect to have a baby with him.

Some falls are harder than others. But it depends on who’s there to catch you...

My Rating - 4 Stars!

Heartwood is the second book in the Speakeasy Taproom series. This is JH Croix's contribution to this multi-author series.

This one starts with a serious breakdown. Poor Belle. When she moves to the small town to recover, she's reunited with her former college hookup, Ty.

What follows is a second chance for them to get to know each other. Already complete opposites, both have changed a lot and they spend some time confessing their issues and exploring who they each are now.

I enjoy everything about this couple and their story. They never actually dated, but they clearly fall into the second chance category. I enjoy the way both have drastically changed over the years, yet they still connect well and have amazing chemistry. Apparently, not everything changed.

This is a story of forgiveness and understanding. It has family issues, including a disabled sister and a controlling father. Ty's sister and parents are a big part of the story. She's disabled and truly a breath of fresh air.

Their story is a fabulous reminder that everyone has their issues to deal with. Everyone has things in their pasts that they're ashamed of. And everyone has the ability to move forward. Love it.

This story addresses the issues of mental health with knowledge, care, and compassion. The Bipolar aspect is fabulously explored, reiterating that it isn't a life sentence or the end of the world. As well, you can't blame someone for what they do when manic. I am seriously impressed with the way this is written.

It's written in alternating first person pov, easily pulling the reader into the story. Everything flows well and is easy to read.

Heartwood is a great addition to this small town series. JH Croix does a wonderful job addressing some serious issues without ever feeling too serious.

Belle’s wide brown eyes held mine, and I wanted to lean over and kiss the freckles on her cheeks. Uncertainty flickered in her gaze, but it passed quickly. She surprised me by lifting her hand and smoothing a fingertip over one of my eyebrows. Her lips curled in a small smile as her hand fell to rest on my chest. “It was messy,” she explained.

“My eyebrow?”

She nodded, blinking as her cheeks went a little pink.

“Well, thank you then,” I offered somberly.

She bit her lip and laughed. I took the moment to let my eyes absorb the sight of her. With her flushed skin, her bright eyes, and her swollen lips, she was disarmingly delectable. Hell, I could’ve gone another round right then. I hadn’t been living as a monk, but I also hadn’t exactly found much time of late for women, much less women who got to me the way Belle did.

If I was being honest with myself, no woman got to me like Belle. She was singular in her ability to set me on fire. We were just that good together. It was easy and fucking hot.

Just then, I noticed she was still wearing her skirt. I chuckled, and she asked, “What’s so funny?”

“We never got your skirt off.”

She grinned, and a sly look entered her eyes. “Maybe not, but at least I got my panties and boots off.”

I laughed, and she traced circles on my chest with a fingertip. I lifted a palm, needing to touch her. I smoothed it over the sweet curve of her shoulder, my eyes landing on the tattoo at the top of her shoulder blade. With her angled toward me, it was just visible. “This is new.” It was a heart, drawn as if carved into wood, the lines of the grain etched in varying subtle shades of brown and gold. “It’s beautiful,” I added.

“How do you know it’s new?” Her big brown eyes lifted to mine, a saucy hint contained there.

“Because I would remember if you had it before. I didn’t forget anything about you.” The moment I said that, my heart gave a tricky kick. Belle had this way of sliding right through my defenses. I revealed perhaps too much with that comment.

She blinked as a wash of pink bloomed on her cheeks. She swallowed, her lashes sweeping down again. “I didn’t have it before. My father’s a woodcarver in his spare time. I always loved watching him on the weekends when I was little.” Her lashes lifted again, vulnerability flickering in her gaze for a flash. “It’s to represent heartwood. That’s the densest and strongest part of the tree.”

I absorbed that as I traced the edges of the heart with my fingertip. “It’s beautiful,” I repeated.

Quiet spun out between us. She dipped her head, nipping lightly on my shoulder. I shifted closer and laid another kiss on her, for no other reason than that I loved kissing Belle. She had a sassy tongue, and she never hesitated to throw herself into kisses.

When I drew back, she asked, “Is this when I find a way to gracefully depart?”

“Hell, no. I’ve got you for the whole night.”

Her throaty laugh rang out, and I pulled her on top of me, kissing her again because I wanted her, and I wanted to dive into her fire. I wasn’t so sure I wanted to think too hard about just how fiercely I wanted her to stay.

Length: 227 pages

Blurb

Tree surgeon Aidan Drummond is content with his own company. He works alone, and lives alone, and it doesn’t occur to him to want anything else until a life-changing accident lands him in hospital. Then a glimpse of the beautiful boy in the opposite bed changes everything.

Ludo Giordano is trapped on the ward with a bunch of old men. His mind plays tricks on him, keeping him awake. Then late one night, a new face brings a welcome distraction. Their unlikely friendship is addictive. And, like most things in Ludo’s life, temporary.

Back in the real world, Aidan’s monochrome existence is no longer enough. He craves the colour Ludo brought him, and when a chance meeting brings them back together, before long, they’re inseparable again.

But bliss comes with complications. Aidan is on the road to recovery, but Ludo has been unwell his entire life, and that’s not going to change. Aidan can kiss him as much as he likes, but if he can’t help Ludo when he needs him most, they don’t stand a chance.

"Kiss Me Again is a deliciously tender and prickly romance about the intimacy that comes with acceptance. Ludo and Aidan accept and love each other for exactly who they are—complications, injuries, mental health issues, moods—and I loved them for it." -- Roan Parish

My Rating - 5 Stars!

Garrett Leigh's Kiss Me Again is a heart-warming, yet pensive novel.

After a fall leaves Aidan injured, scarred, and left immobile in the hospital, he meets Ludo. The two men have a quick and sudden connection. What follows is a powerful love story.

It's a tender tale of mental illness, as Ludo is bipolar. This look into living with bipolar disease, as well as living with a bipolar person, is written with knowledge and care. It's a strong theme and will definitely bring out all the emotions.

Their story is messy, complicated, and full of ups and downs. Riveting and compelling, Aidan and Ludo will affect you and leave a lasting impression.

My favorite quote is  "And there's the problem I've always had with living things . . . people, animals, whichever. With love comes fear of living without. Of breaking it. Hurting it."

In typical Garrett Leigh fashion, Kiss Me Again is a gusty tale full of touching issues. This romance is real, raw, and definitely not for the faint of heart. If you're looking for a story with meaning, do not miss this accomplished tale.

Fem by Seth King

Blurb

Peter Martin is living two lives inside one body.

Although he is openly gay, a lifetime of taunting from his family and community for being “too feminine” has still left him clad in false armor, portraying a character that is entirely fake, but keeps him safe from ridicule all the same. Stand tall, speak deeply, keep a strong handshake, never draw attention, never be “too gay.” But deep in his wildest dreams, Peter is a fabulous, flamboyant diva – he is just terrified of what it would mean for his life if he ever let his true rainbow colors shine through.

Until he meets Andre Munoz.

Andre is a traditionally masculine gay man who happens to love men like Peter, and who treasures Peter for everything he ever hated and concealed about himself. Andre is also into the “lace lifestyle,” a mysterious underground world of men who reject society’s rules and engage in sex while wearing gender-bending looks involving lingerie, fishnets, heels, and more. Peter is instantly hooked – on Andre, and on the lingerie.

Peter and Andre soon fall electrically in love, and their increasingly mind-blowing – and boundary-pushing – sex sessions come with an unexpected side effect. For the first time, Peter is embracing, exploring, and even accepting his own femininity. Glowing with all this newfound confidence, Peter soon gets a wild idea: after years of being half-alive, why not finally unleash his truest self and launch the side career of his dreams as a drag queen?

But Peter’s family is still his family, and his town is still his town. Will Andre prove to be his ultimate savior, or the catalyst of the biggest mistake of his life?

Seth King’s Fem is a love story about how in the end, the love that rules all is the love you must find for the man in the mirror – even if that man happens to be wearing sequins.

“Fem shook my world. Beautifully, breathtakingly good.” – author Angelique Jurd

“I read this book in twelve hours and still can’t stop thinking about it, over a week later. Brilliant and gorgeous.” – Kell’s Bookmark Clique

“One of those books that changes you and stays with you.” – Robert Sandlin

“The best gay love story I have ever read.” – K. Ellis

“More than just a love story…everyone should read this book.” – Quendolyn Barlow

Review
My Rating - 5 Stars!

In typical Seth King fashion, Fem is written with transparency, honesty, and heart.

Fem's a beautiful exploration of Peter's feminine side which he's never been allowed to explore before. I love the freedom he finds when he's finally able to experiment with what he likes. Being able to discover who he really is, and what he really wants leads to a feel-good story.

At it's heart, it's a story of learning to be comfortable in one's own skin. It's also a story of regret and guilt, as well as a story of sacrifice and learning to love oneself.

Peter's relationship with his mother is heart-breaking. As a bi-polar person, his mother abused and hurt him for years. But, cue the tears when she admits that hurt people hurt people. The author provides an amazing look into mental health, reminding us to separate the illness from the person. This is an accomplished tale of understanding, empathy, and forgiveness. It's also a tale of pain, hurt, and rage.

Fem is a wonderful story of one's journey towards self-acceptance. Seth King's writing style is accomplished, with a fantastic storyline, wonderful characters, and a perfect pace. Read this book if you're looking for an amazing story of a man struggling with his feminine side.

GRL 2018 SPOTLIGHT - Riley Long - Pulling Strings (Youngs Spades #1)

In my attempt to cover some of the attending authors for this year's GRL,
I am reviewing

Pulling Strings by Riley Long!

BLURB

Aristotle “Ari” Dineen, Jr. thinks he doesn't deserve love. Ari has bipolar disorder and parents who don't understand his challenges. Falling in love isn't on the playlist for a guy like him, someone running from his past and so uncertain about his future.

Shane Beckett doesn't have time for things like love. He's busy - giving music lessons, finishing his senior year, and oh yeah, he's the lead singer of up and coming indie rock band, Young Spades.

A cup of beer, a music history class, and a pack of cigarettes changes everything.

As Ari and Shane are about to find out, despite having a lack of time or the confidence to believe they can make it work, love has a way of pulling them in and rocking their worlds.

REVIEW
My Rating - 5 Stars!

Pulling Strings is my first time reading something from Riley Long, and now I am hooked.

This story is absolutely fantastic, as it's tone is great, the flow is wonderful and the storyline is outstanding.

Ari is struggling at college, as he's bipolar and has a tough time socializing. When he meets Shane, a cup of beer changes everything. They have  some issues to work out between them, but after they get together, both men start struggling more.

Shane succumbs too the pressures of trying to juggle too many things, and Ari's mental health issues give him trouble.

The mental health aspects are this book are handled impressively, as they are written with knowledge, care, compassion, and heart. The therapy sessions are superb. This story will tug at your heartstrings, as both young men are forced to deal with so much in their lives.

Pulling Strings is a gripping tale, with a great flow and an ambitious storyline that will take you on an emotional rollercoaster. I am thrilled to have found this book by Riley Long and I look forward to reading more from her.

The craziest thing Riley has ever done involves lots of butter and a time lapsed video.
